In this video, I show my students how to attach a simple "fake" pulled handle I made previously. Once the handle becomes leatherhard- the same moisture as the cup- it can be attached.. Remember: Handle and Mug MUST be the same moisture to prevent cracking!
Please see my other video on attaching handle forms to understand that. • Making a "Fake" Pulled...
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Amazing videos! These help me so much as a beginning pottery teacher.I am sure you have come up with a name for that tool by now... but I call it the "welding tool" in my classroom. :)

Lol! That's a great name! One of my coworkers calls it the "wencil"... that cracks me up! Like a pencil shape... but all wood! ;-) I literally STILL call it the pointy wooden tool that sort of looks like a pencil though! How boring! ;-)

KaransPotsAndGlass I tried this once with one of my mugs and it didn't really come out the way I wanted. I think I'm figuring out that for me with pottery, I have to use new techniques at least 3 times to see if I want to do it again. So . . . we'll see.

Keep at it! My students get it eventually- but it takes many practice mugs to really get the feel for it! :-) Best of luck!!!

What is the tool you used to blend the handle called?
@KaransPotsAndGlass

Hi Mike! It is the Kemper WT-12 wood tool. In the googledoc I don’t think I have a link for it, as I don’t think I’ve found it on Amazon yet!

Hi Karen, I love the mug that you're holding at :20 in the video. Any chance of buying a couple like that from you? One for me and one for my wife. : )

KaransPotsAndGlass Awesome, thank you so much. Just ordered two of those mugs and a yarn bowl. My wife crochets a lot and will love the yarn bowl for a Christmas gift. I'm excited, can't wait. Thanks, again.

maybe you could call it the handle horn! (like a shoe horn).. also it kind of looks like it could have been made from animal horn! 😄

"Wooden Handle Blender" Tool. You said it on the video. But, then for students, you'll still be describing the way it looks for them to find it in the tool caddy as "the pointy wooden tool that sort of looks like a pencil". Funny.

Ha- true! They seem to find it best when I describe how it looks- rather than what it does! ;-)
