We’ll be having a look at an old time classic called Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg was released sixteen years ago, in 2003, being developed by Nival Interactive, a Russian company that also developed Silent Storm.
The game is set during the Second World War, with the player taking the role of a commander on the German, Soviet or Anglo-American sides.
Blitzkrieg is a real-time tactics game. Every mission drops you on the battlefield with a number of units and a lot of enemy units. There is no construction or ways to buy new units, making Blitzkrieg intently focused on the combat, tactics and, surprisingly, logistics.
So, let’s dig in and see if this game is still worth the while!

The Mission Barbarossa and Mission Kursk add ons were great fun and took the basic game to a different level.

Do you know where I can find them? Had an old PC with both expansions but since it broke, I can’t find either Kursk or Barbarossa ANYWHERE. Are they extinct?

I LOVE THIS GAME! This actually "got me into" WWII weapons when I was in 8th grade, before playing this I knew very little about the real tanks and aircraft of the war... and besides the equipment of WWII, a lot of military history I didn't know about (like the battles for kharkov) I was introduced to in the game... I still play it occasionally, last year (summer 2020) I played a few missions on the German barbarossa and Moscow campaigns, this many years later I still enjoy it, I like to complete missions with 0 or very few losses, and use artillery and self propelled guns a lot to minimize my casualties, sometimes I try to only use my 6 armor units to win which can be difficult but fun

For anyone who cares, there's plenty of games on the Blitzkrieg engine, they're listed on wikipedia and a ton of them are on steam, such as Stalingrad or Cuban Missile Crisis Aftermath.

So much nostalgia, especially when he’s playing that mission around 5:40, I can remember trying so hard to beat that mission when I was about 6. I still go back and play it here and there, it’s interesting to see what was once considered cutting edge

Just as a thing, the tanks, trucks, artillery i.e "technic" units are 3d. Buildings, flora, objects and infantry are 2d.

Hey Robert, Lucian here. I was under the impression that they were not. The 'technic' units have a certain stuttering when turning, which I understood was due to the rendering method not involving 3D models. Later games like Blitzkrieg 2 or Talvisota did change to full 3D and this stutter disappeared. Am I mistaken? Do you have any sources for this?

@@TanksEncyclopediaYT I mod this game extensively. Talvisota is simply a mod for BK. BK2 changed everything to full 3d. Simply look at the game files. Technic units are 3d. Infantry units are 2d.

Is there a way to extract these 3D units and visualize them in Blender?

@@Kanovskiy There is a tool called "Tanks Viewer". The files themselves are in a .pak file, which is just a zip file really, opens with WinRAR, Winzip etc. The 3d files are .mod files, which open with the afforementioned viewer, which can export them as .obj files. The textures for them are .dds files.

CDV boards were also awesome fun. Learned about the WTC attacks by an Australian on there. Made many friends from Europe and the US there. Great wild west of the internet

There was a modd that basically let you "recycle" small old tanks at a factory, and get new fancy tanks as reinforcement. It was the most amazing map i ever played

Yes, I do as well. Have you ever played Panzerkrieg Burning Horizon 2, Rolling Thunder or other custom missions and campaigns? I love one specific campaign called Achtung Panzer made by GordonCZ.

You would be horrified to check out the game World War 1 that uses the same game engine, the first German mission starts with the advance through Beligum with Germany using a plentiful amount of A7V's in 1914 🙃

What i like is that the Scope of Blitzkrieg is smaller than in Sudden Strikes. Works well for the controls. Sudden Strike is sometimes just "overkill" Micromanagement.
