After Pong came the first clones. / @michaelcoorlim
-----
Electromechanical arcade game developers had been making clones of each others' games for years - but when Pong came along, it was easier than ever.

Stuff like not releasing games for a year to get around a legal settlement makes Bushnell seem like a cartoon character at times

I knew Pong created a massive boom in the arcade video game industry. I had no idea Atari missed a large chunk of said boom.

It's a good thing the video games industry has matured so much since this time. Can you imagine that? Publishers releasing borderline copies of a really popular game just with different skins and gimmicks? Why, with the internet, they could do REALLY scummy things, like requiring a constant internet connection, or making their game a subscription, or *releasing* the game for free but charging for individual items and minor aesthetic changes that do little to nothing to alter the gameplay. Goodness, they might even make these things only available for a limited time and then gone forever if you don't play for dozens and dozens of hours to either earn these items for "free" or pay real world money for them. Now wouldn't THAT just be irritating and anti-consumer!

I think it is crazy that I was born in 1976 and was obsessed with video games as a child but never in my life played a pong console. They were gone by the early eighties.

Same, mostly - I think my first console was an Atari 2600 hand-me-down in 1984.

We had a pong console, but the first console I actually owned was a 2600 my mom's boyfriend gave me along with about 12 games.

The illustration used for Barrel Pong isn't Barrel Pong, but Pong-in-a-Barrel. These were two separate gimmick cabinets by Atari, both released in 1973. Barrel Pong used a sideways barrel with a hole sawed in it.

Solid video. Clean Sweep is a good time, Ramtek was definitely ahead of the curve, as was Meadows. I still need to make a good game play video of my Clean Sweep.

Some of those clones were not all that bad.
@MichaelCoorlim
@MichaelCoorlim 3 месяца назад
Yeah - a lot of more creative clones forced innovation that Atari wouldn't have pursued on their own.

Puppy Pong did, indeed, begin as Snoopy Pong in an attempt to get the license. They failed and just changed it. Much like Atari's,... I mean Horror Games's Shark JAWS arcade game that tried to get the Jaws license from Universal.

I'm familiar with the difficulty of playing pong by yourself, we had a home version when I was 6 or 7 years old, but my brother was 2 or 3 at the time.

whats going on with the paddles at the beginning?
@MichaelCoorlim
@MichaelCoorlim 3 месяца назад
That's me recording a video while emulating pong and using thumbsticks to control both paddles at once. It's uh, not easy.

9:09 Snoopy pong came before puppy pong. Snoopy Pong actually existed and it's not that hard to find pictures of it.
@Pikachu132
@Pikachu132 3 месяца назад
Snoopy Pong was never released, the pictures you can find are of the one single prototype they made before getting a lawsuit on their hands due to not having bothered getting the Peanuts license first.
