That symbolism of the Colossal Titan stepping on that butterfly was also pretty much just showing Eren trampling over ideal freedom in the name of his warped perception of it. It was either that or Mikasa stepping on the butterfly as a sign of her resolve to no longer try to save Eren.

1:09 there’s something heartbreaking about this specific part for those that’ve already seen the manga chapters. Because you realize just how warped Eren’s mind has been for a very long time. It’s something a lot of fans didn’t seem to realize when season 4 came out but if you go and look back to everything he’s said and done in the past seasons, this is the natural progression of someone like him. He’s always had it in him to kill since he was a child. That wasn’t learned behavior, that was something he was always capable of doing. So when he learned of the outside world from Armin, there ideal freedom may have initially been perceived as the same, they were fundamentally different. Eren in his juvenile mindset specifically wanted the world to be seen exactly as it was shown in Armin’s books so at the end of season 3 when he asks if they’ll be free if he kills everyone beyond the sea, this is what he meant in actuality. The Rumbling was a convenient way to protect his friends but it also was mainly done because he was bound by his ideal perception of the freedom he wanted hence why you see the transformation to his child self from his adult self. Because that’s the real Eren, the child who could never look past his own foolish dreams in spite of the guilt he may have felt for his actions. That’s why Armin called him pathetic when he admitted he didn’t want to die or lose Mikasa. That’s also why Eren admitted that regardless of his friends being in the picture, the Rumbling would’ve happened regardless, all because he wanted to. And that’s just sad.

The most soul wrenchingly terrifying part of the rumbling is the fact that they are just walking. They aren't actively destroying anything, or killing anyone. It's all incidental. The very existence of the wall Titans is destructive beyond measure, independent of any action they might take. They're. Just. Walking.

Not gonna lie, these were my exact 16 reactions when viewing this heavy metal opening. I was 12 in 2013 when this anime came out. At the time I was in middle school and my friends and I would excitedly talk about our own theory’s and what’s gonna happen next. Having to wait 4 years for a season 2 was well worth it and I’m glad Isayama focused more on the inner walls and story more than action since it gave us way more puzzle pieces world building. I feel like season’s 3 and 4 are the culmination of Eren’s decisions and this season should be absolutely insanity from the *Rumbling* that I’ve only heard from other fans online. I’m 20 years old now and I’m glad I grew up with this invigoratingly immersive world with its interesting characters. It turns out that Isayama was influenced by a PlayStation 3 game called Muv-Luv Alternative which was about aliens taking over the world and forced the human race into extinction. Thank you Isayama for playing this visual novel game.

I will never forget my first episode of aot was on adult swim when I was in 5th grade and I was so interested in the show after that and now I’m all caught up ready for the final
