In my 10 years of climbing I've never met any overly disrespectful person. Climbing I think promotes good behaviour and 99% of people you meet are nice and helpful!

You handled yourself well. Most climbers are very chill. Surprising to see a climbing Karen. The only times I've come across etiquette issues is usually brand new climbers or children that just don't know better.

I haven't had a bad experience either, but I read a lot about climbing moms on reddit who don't give a quack when their toddlers wandering underneath the climbers nearly getting crushed plus getting full Karen mode if people get upset cuz they're worried about their safety.

she has no decency, you're not in the wrong for that, and you even offered to brush after your attempt. sorry that happened to you man

So strange to find that kind of behavior in a climbing gym. I find that climbers are a unique breed with kindness and respect as part of the status quo. You, I must say, handled yourself so well. I was fuming and I was just watching this on my computer from thousands of miles away. Good for you

Long term solution is to climb only in non-Karen grades.

doesn't help if she's climbing boulders well above her level.

At all my gym, people talk to you and fist bump you if you send it. If you're not on the wall, other people are allowed to go on it. Why so possessive?

yup, same at my gym and every gym I've been to. It would say, the one rule that does exist is don't jump on a boulder before the person who just brushed it got their attempt in, but that wasn't the case in this video at all since he brushed it himself
@chloeadventure
@chloeadventure 10 месяцев назад
My understanding: the person who brushes the holds just has one attempt priority. But very often some gentleman in our gym help me brushes holds for the boulder they don’t even try or brushes after they sent already.

Very uncomfortable and avoidable situation. It is very uncool to claim a boulder for ever. I tend to ask people whether they mind if I try it/join them trying.

What a strange response. Most folk woukd just watch to see if they could pick up some beta or tips from you, and then use that to learn. Strange woman.

I just to live in Melbourne, this gym didn’t exist. I used to go to urban climb in Collingwood I loved it. Greetings from Mexico

It's almost like she watched a climbing ettiquette video that says "if someone else brushed a climb don't cut in front of them" and thought that meant if she brushed a climb no one else was allowed to have a go.

I have seen them before, but usually they are just watching their little kids climb. I've never seen one actually on the wall.

I get why it's upsetting. She was being a bit passive-aggressive. You were in line with etiquette; she wasn't. Still, maybe reconsider posting other people in your videos (unless she's on board with it, which seems unlikely). I get people will appear in the background, but you've singled her out. The matter was settled at the gym. Leave well enough alone. Personally, I'm more disturbed at the thought of someone doing what you've done here than I am by what she's done.

So i think i see where you went wrong. A simple "Do you mind if I try this?" can go a long way. Sure people should share, but if theyd prefer a quiet time to work something alone, you could come back to that particular problem later on. In an empty gym this isnt much to ask. This is especially useful to avoid making someone feel bad by cruising their project, or worse yet campussing it haha.
@jeksewnoleeray1020
@jeksewnoleeray1020 9 месяцев назад
He perfectly followed climbing etiquette, he didn't go wrong anywhere. You shouldn't have to tiptoe around Karens for the sake of their ego.
@coachgarryclimbing
@coachgarryclimbing 9 месяцев назад
@jeksewnoleeray1020 i think the etiquette depends on the context. In a busy gym during peak times you can afford to be more considerate than in heaving gyms at peak hours. I agree that the angry person didnt behave well but in a dead quiet gym you should touch base with someone whos projecting something to see if they mind company. For example, lots of people dont like strong climbers flashing their project in their face (or worse yet campussing it). Maybe its an introvert vs extrovert thing. Or maybe a consumer mindset?
@autumn_k

@@coachgarryclimbing I am heavily introverted, but like all* people, I have to come into the gym with realistic expectations. The reality of most climbing spaces, especially gyms, is that they are shared spaces and we all need to find a way to coexist. That's why the common etiquette exists. There's nothing in the context of this scenario that changes what etiquette applies unless this gym has its own out of sync with the norm. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I've never backed off trying a climb to give someone space. That's something a lot of us choose to do now and then, but it's not etiquette and it wouldn't be wrong to do other wise. *I'm talking introversion here, mind you. Not some sort of social anxiety issue, personal space issue or sensory overload issue. It would be cool if gyms and climbers worked with people who had some atypical needs. There's no reason to believe that's the case here.
@coachgarryclimbing
@coachgarryclimbing 8 месяцев назад
@autumn_k absolutely agree. I think it cuts both ways. Often with sharing not everyone will get what they want, but communication makes it easier. If you knew that someone wanted time alone on a problem (when the gym is empty) and you had the option to try something else for a bit, why not do it as a kindness? I also wonder what the etiquette is with cameras and content creators using a shared space. As always with these things, we dont have the full picture here and only one side of the story.

There is something worse. I dont have it on tape sadly. I'm a father and i teached my son very early to look up and dont go on the mads without me (hes 4now). Last session i had a friend very high onthe wall. It wasnt a straight wall so no looking down. I was at the edge of the mad, 2meters to the side coaching. 1 Second before he toped and nearly missed, falling down. 2Kids 8years old are running over the mad. Directly under him. I was telling the boys after this, that this was very bad. I couldnt find the parents. My friend was close to a heartattack. Would he have fallen both boys would have been flat.

Something similar happened to me. I checked that there was no one near me when I started my climb (it was a tough climb and I knew there was a chance I’d fall off). As soon as I got to the crux, a toddler (a toddler not even climbing age yet) ran on the mat directly under me as I was about to fall. This kid came out of nowhere - he was nowhere near me when I started the climb. His dad grabbed him just in the knick of time. I had some choice words for the dad and reported them to the staff. I could see the mom shrugging it off later. Unsupervised kids at the gym are absolutely my pet peeve. If you can’t watch your kids, don’t take them with you. Good for you for teaching your children well and drilling safety into them from a young age.

It's so not ok to present the opponent of a little dispute to the internet. Way worse than Karen stuff. Why can't Americans recognise opponent interests? It's always about me, me, me, I want revenge.
