Ted Covington recalls his first serious combat operation in the Admiralty Islands. He describes how the situation on the ground was tenuous as the Japanese counter-attacked until American forces became seriously low on ammunition. Ted was part of the first wave of reinforcements sent by General MacArthur to reinforce American troops and beat back the Japanese attackers.
Ted goes on to describe a reconnaissance mission assigned to three Battery Commanders in order to find good firing positions for the artillery on neighboring islands. One of the Battery Commanders, Captain Rich, did not return to base because his group was ambushed by the Japanese and took casualties before escaping to safety. Ted recalls how that incident affected Capt. Rich for the remainder of the war.

About the Veteran: Major Edmund 'Ted' Covington, Jr. served with the US Army in the 1st Cavalry Division, 61st Field Artillery Battalion, during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater fighting the Japanese Army during the war. His service spanned many campaigns including New Guinea, the Admiralty Islands, Leyte, the Philippines, and the Army of Occupation in Japan. He would earn 2 Bronze Stars with Oakleaf Cluster as well as 2 Air Medals during his service.
