Although our journey to our trauma may be different, a lot of this I resonate with. I felt so much anger when I heard prisoners can get pretty much instant access to a psychologist. I’m on an 18 month waiting list for my ptsd psych referral. What else resonated heavily is you’re left to pick up the pieces for what they’ve done. Despite all of the resources available, you’re left to pick things back up. Navigate relationships, jobs, day to day etc. It feels almost impossible to continue after traumatic situations. But we can show people that we’re here in spite of it. It doesn’t define us. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I still find it difficult to talk about my experiences, but I know that by sharing your story, you will help so many people feel like they’re not alone. Thank you Denise.

Such an amazing woman who has taken her horrendous lived experience and grown from it. So intelligent and articulate and shows that this is NEVER the fault of the abused. I'm sure this podcast will give so many others the strength to change their situation.

Well done for speaking out about all this you went through! It's hard to speak up. I went through some serious sh!t and stayed with them because I knew I was stronger then others so stayed in the relationship to save someone else but I had to get out. And when I did I didn't tell a soul what happened and my family will never know because they don't need to. I have moved on and healed best I can. It takes bloody ages to get over it all. I still have ptsd from it all and flinch or say sorry for no reason etc my husband just holds me and says I'm safe over and over and I am thank fully xxxxx

This is such a good podcast. Denise tells her story so eloquently and the hosts are very compassionate and let her speak. Unfortunately I have heard many elements of this story before and this is harsh warning of how quickly things can escalate. Denise you are an amazingly strong women and I’m sure this will help other women.

Wow. Denise thank you for sharing your story. Your strength, light and resilience are your superpowers. I hope and pray with every ounce of my faith that the monster gets what he deserves. Your safety and your family's safety are more important than our flawed justice system feeling good about rehabilitating offenders. He deserves to rot. You are an inspiration and a positive light for so many. Wishing you all the happiness and healing you deserve.

Beautiful strong woman. Truly a heart of kindness. The fact you were also worried about him says a lot about your character. But I resonate with the you’ve had a hard life it doesn’t make you cruel. But being kind doesn’t mean giving in, it means you own your life. You dictate who deserves your kindness

Thank you for sharing this, I know it wouldn’t have been easy. The system is so wrong. My ex emotionally abused me the whole relationship and only ever put hands on me the night I tried to leave him. To this day, I can’t get a restraining order because in their eyes, he hasn’t done enough. Yet he has done everything this horrible person done to you running up to attacking you, to me. But it isn’t enough. I live in fear everyday in case I bump into him or he turns up to my work or house. I’ve tried to reach out for help and I haven’t gotten it after explaining everything, and it angers me so much that if he was to get locked up; he’d get it right away when he was never the victim. We wonder why people stay in relationships when we know we’re safer that way, no matter how much it wrecks us.

So right. When I tried to leave an abusive relationship five years ago I was held captive at gun point. Three days without access to a bathroom. No food. Repeated sexual abuse. I used a cup for a toilet and disposed of contents through a small crack in a window when ever he went out to eat. I managed to escape when he was asleep. I’m still hyper vigilant. I had counselling for ptsd. Still get triggers of panic from certain words and I still get nightmares. But I’m a survivor not a victim now. CBT therapy helped me with irrational thoughts. I carry an alarm everywhere with me.

Not to be rude or nothing but this isn’t about you she’s telling her trauma and all you can say is she’s wrong then continue talking about yourself and about how you’re sober yes it’s a good thing that you’re sober but you couldn’t have even said I’m so sorry or I’m glad your better now that is her point of view on rehab centres I’m sorry if that offendeds you but she clearly is traumatised and was struggling and it probably took a lot for her to do this and your too busy worrying that she didn’t think that there was rehab centres that help in Northern Ireland
