This is why I preach that officers need to be doing something outside of work, anything self defense. I personally do mma, bjj, and hand to hand knife combat. It’s so important to know something else. You can’t always depend on spray. Or the Baton, when you get rushed you need to know something to defend yourself. Do not depend on just your duty belt.

Hey, Hector, good afternoon. I can relate to staff assault, and also seeing a fellow officer, or even a staff member, getting assaulted is definitely a mixed emotion. It's terrifying, along with a whole lot of anger, while it's happening. Don't worry about administration. Just be there for your partners. Administration is not there while its happening and does not have a damn clue to what happened. They are inmates it's just a shame that they to be reminded. It's definitely a part of the job to be prepared for, and you don't know how each day will go. The best thing is getting off in one piece, and leaving is a good day. One last thing everyone be safe out there, and remember level 1-4 it's just a few points to go up.

California in of itself is a dangerous state, it's hell everywhere whether if it's the outside or the inside. If you work as a PO\SO\CO anywhere in California, just know that shit might happen at any given second and everything can go crazy in the blink of an eye. Everything you said Hector doesn't apply to the CDCR only, but it applies to working in this kind of domain in general. I've seen Security Officers and even Police Officers get caught off guard for either not caring that much about themselves or simply not taking their job seriously. Self preservation is key, you'll never know what can happen, one moment you're just chilling with you buddy and suddenly, you might end up having your body dying between your hands over a GSW.

The inmates will test you with everything. How you react to personal space what you will take verbally and will watch the new guys during an incident all they do is watch and have nothing but time. Cadets be safe firm fair consistent. That is the main key.

Jeff Cucumber and Newsom could be Norway shower sharking, and they wouldn't get speared, slashed or stomped out. All of us who have worked custody got out without being targeted for attack but we sure as hell have had to deal with violence every day. By the grace of God and situational awareness, we got out without serious injury. (read comments from yesterday's post) great video.
