The color on the 96 Cobra was called “Mystic” and the color on the 2004 Cobra was “Mystichrome.” People often incorrectly refer to the 90s paint as Mystichrome as well because that was the more popular color, but Mystic is a completely distinct color with more golds/orange hues and less blue hues.

I was wondering if this was the color that Saleen used on the one-off 351SR widebody, but that was more purple and blue, no green. I actually got to see that car at their plant years later, it was never much of a car, more a shell to show off and judge marketability.

@@AC-bl1rlI saw a real one at a place in Virginia where there's a small museum of saleen cars and there was a convertible that was painted Mystichrome, as in 2004 sand the guy there said it was a real one not a repainted saleen. So there may be more than one saleen with these paint colors. He did say it was rare as well.

As a former Mystichrome owner, (and having replaced 2 bumpers that needed to be painted lol), I could immediately spot what was missing. The metal flake, hence the "chrome" in Mystichrome. I think if you added some flake it would be hard to tell. Maybe a lil gloss on top also? But looked amazing. Great job!

By far the hardest color to replicate. I don't think it's the right color shifts. Damn near close except for the gold and blue missing. I applaud you for doing this because you made a very favorable color. No matter if people tell you it's off or right on this is a beautiful color you have created.

Worked for a Ford dealer back when Mystichrome " Chameleon " was available. No two paint jobs were ever the same colors.

This might be my favorite color shift yet. I like the darker muted shifts. I kinda remember seeing the original color a few times back in the day and this has to be pretty close.

I ain't going to lie I remember both the Mystic Mustangs and the Mystichrome Cobras back in the 90s and this has damn near hit the nail on the head. It isn't exact but it's literally the closest I've ever seen anyone get to it. Kudos because that's awesome 👍 First 5/5 I've ever given on DYC

Mystichrome 6/10 For a possible DIY job this is a solid 9/10. Don't ignore the negative feedback just because dip will never equal a full paint job. DYP has its place in the auto community and for the money this is an amazing result.

I remember seeing this color back in the day, twice, it's a pretty close recreation from my memory. Best I've seen at any rate. Good job! I'd love to put that on a bronco that's been coyote swapped.

I'd argue that paint like that was just as common, if not more common back then as it is now. Hell, I'd say it goes way back to the American custom car era of the 1950s.

For everyday folks like myself, color shift cars were few and far between in the 90's. The first few times I saw them, it blew my mind. It seemed like magic that it could look like a different color from a different angel. :)

It's really close. Closest I've seen anyone get. The actual pigments for it are extremely expensive. The shift is spot on. The only spot that it missed the mark is the vibrance of the colors. Didn't miss by much though. It could be that it's not as sunny out. The colors just pop harder is all. Still a solid 5. Fantastic attempt. By percentages on how close the "match" is, 93-95%. Most others that claim mystic or mystichrome, barely touch 80%. Take that how you will.

Wow! That looks amazing. When it goes from green to purple then black....it's so cool looking. Also, when you poured the painted into the spray jug you can see the cameraman in the pouring paint. Pretty neat.

As a former Mustang owner I dig this! I've heard of all the hops to get a shop to paint Mystichrome and to be honest it's almost not worth the trouble. I think this would be a great option! YOU NAILED IT!

I've been an automotive painter for 40 plus years. We had a early Saleen come into the shop with this on it . The color was developed by BASF and to help achieve the effect they desired, it had the same toner used on 100 dollar bills. So to even be able to obtain the paint, you had to provide the Vin#. They would ask you how much paint was needed and then bring it with a representative to watch over you as you painted. Then they disposed of any waste products personally, then take the remainder if any was left over. Because they were concerned about someone reverse engineering it and replicating the highly guarded toner shared by some US currency. Crazy! Really blew my mind. I would be curious how well this matches the original without that special toner. But it does look good, at least in the video.

This looks phenomenal its as close to a match as you can get I’ve seen the real color in person my neighbor had one. The only thing that I noticed was the wide spanning angles of green this has which the original doesn’t really do. The original has a lot of green but the visual angle doesn’t span as big of a distance as this dip does. The original is a much more narrow and local section of green shift in comparison.

You're right but I think that also comes down to the body shape. This gen mustang has a lot more 'flat' areas compared to the more bubbly sn95 mustang it came on originally.

1996 Cobras(the color he tried to match) were "Mystic", 2004 Cobras were "MystiChrome". Only available Mystic style factory paint colors were available for 2 years(1996, and 2004). Great turnout, and color by the way !

As others have stated, other than the 96 color being mystic not mystichrome ( 2004 ), yes I would say that’s a pretty solid match for the original. Which is not easy. Often imitated rarely duplicated. Nice work 👏🏽

So you hit the nail on the head for that one for sure. Like I said I don’t recall the one from the 90s so I can’t say for sure

I knew a painter for a Ford dealer back in the 90's that skimmed enough of this stuff off somehow to paint his Z3 with it. It was pretty wild watching the process for the first time back then.

If I recall there is actually like 3-4 different ford flip color paints. Mystic/ mystic chrome and saleen rainbow chrome . But your clear gloss is looking much better from when I started watching

I actually went to my brothers to compare to his 96 mystic cobra and would say very close. The blue doesn’t pop as much and there’s more of a burnt orange/amber that just pops on the original car. However when I comes to that it’s hard to judge a video to something in person. Great job though.

Looks like the Mystichrome, the 2000 Cobra. The 90’s Cobra with Mystic paint had almost a gold/burnt orange also. It looks great tho. Definitely a badass color.

I worked for the company that made the door handles for the mustang painted in mystic. That color is close, maybe not exact. The original was a bit glossier and maybe a bit more shift to orange. The original paint cost thousands of dollars per gallon and was guarded and locked up in the paint shop. There was always a rumor that it used the same pigment that was used in the ink for US currency. I never confirmed that for myself but it always made a good story..lol

In 97, I repaired a 96 cobra. When it came time to paint, the rep brought all the necessary materials, then waited until I was done painting. Once the car came off bake cycle and was unmasked, the rep took every bit of the masking materials with him.

Fun fact, Mystic the 96 version was made from one of the chemicals that is used to make money. BASF was the only ones who produced it and when you painted it they sent out a rep to watch you. Anything you had left, they took back with them. It was that serious.

I have a friend with a '96 Mystic Cobra bought new. He had ordered a different color, but the dealer called and told him they had a cancelled sale on the Mystic when the buyer's wife found out and gave him the "me or the car speech", so he opted to get the Mystic. The car is mostly stored to keep mileage low. When new he had the exhaust swapped out for a stainless unit (keeps the original on his garage wall to put back on later). While they were doing the swap they scratched one of the fenders. They painted the fender 3 times trying to match the original way the paint looked. They finally had to fly in a rep from DuPont to show them how to lay the paint so it looked factory. Years later he was driving it in winter and slid into a rock. He paid out of pocket for the repairs and told me at that time the paint was going for $500/pint and you had to provide the VIN to show the car was Mystic from the factory before they shipped the paint to the shop.

Did something very close a couple years ago. Jasper green base with black hole color shift in a glossy topcoat. Pretty positive I posted it in the Facebook group but I never actually take videos of my car. Yours has a much better shift if I remember right
