I would break the yarn cakes by fiber type. Generally when knitting/crocheting I dont mix fibers unless it's for a particular look. Then I would have time in color order. Also you can use a rubber band to hold the labels onto the cake so you wont forget the brand, colorway or fiber content. As a designer those are all super important.

I actually went on my computer and made an excel sheet to list all my yarn and it’s info and taped a scrap at the end in case I can’t figure out which one it is. For me is so much simpler because instead of searching through my plastic bin of yarn for a certain color I just check the list. It’s really cut down on accidentally doubling up on the same skeins 😅

So fun and fabs to organize all your yarn! I just wanna drop an FYI, many yarns don't store well long term in cake form. The tension and compression of the fiber can alter it's original fluffy puffy lusciousness, so if you're about to use a yarn, storing short term, or you're not attached to the fibers' current, specific state, cake away! It certainly is more pleasing to look at and easier to store. Otherwise a swift or other method for loosely forming skeins is the preferred 'profesh' method of long term storage. Looks like you're having fun though, so keep it up! I'll just creep back to my yarn cave now...

When I'm winding a cake for immediate use I usually wind it with some solid tension, to make sure the cake doesn't fall apart from my center-pulling. I would think that, if I'm going to store it, I could just wind it very loosely, just enough that it stays together, for long-term, and then re-wind it tighter when I go to use it, and that way it wouldn't stretch or flatten while stored. Do you think that would be a reasonable cake-storage solution? Granted stacking them is a lot less safe, because they'll squish into each other and potentially tangle, but if I was careful, maybe made little cake-height shelves?

I wind my cakes twice to even the tension and add some air into the cake! It's cool how much squishier the cakes are after a second wind.

From what I've read hanks and skeins keep yarn ralaxed, winding like this adds tension and can stretch the fibers specifically for like your animal fibers if you don't use them quickly after caking. If you double wind them tho you can ease the tension and it makes for a larger more relaxed cake so you don't experience any guage issues with longer storage~

Also if you used these as center pull, you're going to be adding additional twist to your yarn, it may also reduce /remove the twist making the plys come apart

My name is Dajah and I'm a yarn addict. This video really resonates with me. You could use the brown wool for making a crochet storage baskets. If you do the bottom 2/3 in the brown and use a different color on the top 1/3 it would look like little nesting baskets that you can put on your desk for yarn decoration or you can make a pot cozy with it.

I got this too and it’s so fun to play with, when I first got it I would wind up the same yarn ball back it forth just to see it build up and for the previous ball to slowly deteriorate(since I usually pull from the middle outwards

If you have the patience there is a method to do it by hand with a toilet paper roll. I did this with my mini stash that had been in balls, though I used a paper towel tube as it was what became available first.

I find when I'm using the ball winder to wind up my yarn, it helps to pull the yarn from the center of the skein so you can continuously wind the yarn without having to stop and stuff like that 👌

Hi! Some5ing you can do to organize the yarns is put curtain rods or any type of rods in the shelf and put it through the middle of the yarns

I haven't rolled my yarn into balls, but I have it organized into what was a pathetic too soft underbed shoe storage. It's perfect for storing yarn in hanging in my closet though. Just need a hefty hanger. You could have it under the bed as well like it should be.

Since I don't have yarn winder, I'm rewinding my yarns manually. Just using my hands, I form them literally like a "ball" of yarns.

Definitely go for the 10oz yarn winder next time! So worth the cost! Mine hardly ever gets messed up but my 4oz one was constantly popping parts off 😂

Instead of having the yarn through the metal hole, you're actually supposed to wrap it around the little leg. Start in the middle of the two loops and wrap it downwards around the metal leg to feed into the cone. Hopefully that made sense lol if there are usually short videos you could watch from where you purchased it or amazon! It creates better tension and it'll have you winding faster and easier :)

There's actually a little screw bit that holds the clamp part to the winder (I have the same one). It's a great winder, worthwhile buy Edit: You can buy a pegboard to put on your wall and use long sticks through the center of the cakes, look up pegboard yarn organization

i've been crocheting/knitting since i was like 9 so my yarn collection is in SHAMBLES i have so much random shit and its all wrapped around itself horribly because i'll start a project and then give up and undo it all. you convinced me to get a yarn winder so much that i had already ordered one off ebay before the video had ended lmaooo.

And I thought my one overflowing basket was a problem... I would definitely suggest a system that allows things to be more visible, and organize by fibre type and/or weight. Perhaps some clear plastic drawers, or bins and mini shelves, so you can access the bottom/back without disrupting what's above/in front?

a have the same problem, what i do is: i dont have any storage space so i put them in hangers. i bought some chep ones that are made with iron, and i open them and put 2 to 3 yarn balls, and when i need it i just put the hanger in a hook and the yarn ball that is them just turn as i pull the string, sorry if i misspronouced some words i'm from brazil and i am still learning english.

Ali use peg board, in each peg a dowel rod, on each dower rod a skein of yarn .. from lightest to darkest!!🧶❤️

i did this with all of my yarn and ended up making them into balls because when i started crocheting with the cakes it kept getting tangled :( i hope you don't have the same problem! but the balls work just as good !

The bottom shelf the pink to the blue the sugar 'n cream brand is that cotton? If so you can make really cute dish/wash cloths. They do have a lot of patterns on line.

I made a velvet (chenille) yarn crochet oversized sweater, and it was the first time ever trying to knit/crochet something. even though it came out just like the tutorial I followed, the yarn was THE WORST. Red fluffs EVERYWHERE, knots mess up the yarn, undoing a few loops (or a whole row even) will MESS up the yarn. And even now, after two months or so, there is white thread sticking out everywhere because it's losing fluff still and it's snapping in places because the thread alone can't hold the weight of the sweater.. It's awful.
