Totally agree, the vet missed the mark on this one big time by not educating her on what she was doing wrong!! And yes the bird was trying to "mate" with that guys hand. Between the diet and the inappropriate petting... omg!

I was going to say something about that as well. That plus his diet could be a bit trigger for the aggressive behavior as well as loss of feathers.

Actually Eclectus parrots are not monogamous, in the wild both the make and female have multiple mates.

@@sarahrichardson3692 I'm not sure about this kind of parrot specifically but most birds are sort of monogamous. But they often will cheat on one another. But usually one male and one female will take care of one nest.

@@catiku5969 Eclectus are not really monogamous in the wild, the female only really mates with her fav but is fed by many boys. The boy feeds many other girls in return. There was a great documentary on it.

It was, he told her to stop it dead in its tracks, and only feed him small amounts of seeds and greens like spinach and broccoli going forward.

I’m sure he gave her a longer lesson on diet, and it was was edited out for time.

Some of the beans she is feeding should not be fed at all. The bird is not on a healthy diet at all.

It's not all on the owners, it is so widely believed the birds just live off seed that it seems common sense. When something is believe to be that obvious, you don't look it up. You wouldn't look up how many sides a triangle has because it's common sense. Luckily where I buy my birds they tell me what their diet should be.

I have read and watched videos that state lentils can be sprouted and given to parrots. Is this method okay and safe?

Most birds shouldn’t have excessive seeds in any form. Ours have the seasonal mix from bird tricks and cold pressed pellets from them as well they’re the best we’ve found with no sugar or additives. We give treats for flight training and in foraging toys with no dyes, plastics, or metals. I knew nothing about birds when I got with my Fiancé and he already had a bird that viewed him as a mate so I spent six months researching our conures. And it’s paid off his bird is no longer plucking himself bald and bloody and screaming the entire day he only yells if I space and don’t feed him within ten minutes of breakfast or dinner time. And we got him a companion who he gets on with really well. They’re such amazing creatures but the more I interact with them the more I think they should be in the wild. I feel like they would have been so much happier in a flock instead of with pink squashy aliens who don’t even speak the language. It breaks my heart for them because even with our best efforts it’s nothing compared to the freedom and socialization they would have had in the wild.

haloperidol to a human is disgusting, even more to a pet.

a vet in San Diego uses haloperidol. I have a rescue Congo gray who plucked after sever trama . I was very lucky because plucking is so self reinforcing and self soothing it can be very resistant to treatment. because of my job I was aware of this from work with young human cutters. IF the plucking persisted and was more than cosmetic I would have used this drug as a last resort but gone to it quickly. I was lucky as it stoped with training safety a good diet and a ton of attention. and luck. I use clicker training. I would have gone to clothing next but it was not needed. she now has great feathers is a confident happy bird, talks a lot. the outcome is so much better than I expected. I recommend training and diet first adequate sleep and light are also important weather it is your bird or child. get help and address as soon as you can. use drugs when needed but it is not always needed. The rewards of using natural methods are so wonderful as we now have a great relationship with no biting or any issues. It takes time and a commitment. never frighten or punish. use a routine with short frequent trainings. end with jackpot stay positive. What you learn about training will apply to your relationships with people too. do not beat yourself up if you must go to drugs for mutilation as many birds have been saved. if only cosmetic try a holistic approach. that is my reconmendation . I also stop peting at the neck as suggested here. Invest on a book on clicker training though I retired it quickly as she mimicks the clicker sound. good luck. @@redrumax

Animals are way more sensitive to certain toxins and alcohol is one of those toxins. One shot of alcohol the way human can be just fine but one shot to a dog that was the same size of the human can be lethal. I completely agree never ever ever give pets any alcohol. The only time a pet should have any form of alcohol is for cleaning a wound or vetrinary purposes.

I think it depends on what kind of bird... my grandparents had an African Grey (I believe that's the proper name for them) for years, she was doing just fine

@@Sabouma28 May I presume that your grandparents were retired and were able to give their bird constant attention, & never left it alone? An old pal used to run a bird sanctuary, & all of the neurotic birds that came to him were birds of all varieties that had been alone in cages, they plucked their feathers, etc. They didn't need prozac, they needed other bird pals. My wife and I adopted a lovebird that had been owned by clueless people who kept it in a cage in a dark pantry. The bird had done massive plucking, was depressed and unresponsive. After we got her and introduced her to our other lovebirds, she fully recovered within weeks. She didn't need prozac, she needed the companionship of other birds, to groom and by groomed by, and so on.

@@Sabouma28 African Greys are incredibly sensitive. Your grandparents must have spent most of the day with it. All parrots need to be in a flock, there's no discussion to be had about it.

@@donnabittner69 No,you are not petting your cat too much... in birds, WHERE you pet them makes a huge difference. It doesn't work the same way in cats. Truly, cats & dogs can be attached to one spouse more than the other, but with birds it turns out that if you stimulate them sexually (by petting them in the wrong place), then it becomes a next level problem.

@@donnabittner69 petting isnt foreplay for cats, it's foreplay for birds without a climax ever in the cards. Imagine being edged for months on end without release, how upset, annoyed, and frustrated you'd be, I'd be biting and plucking too! Only the mate is allowed to touch anything but the head; head and upper neck can be preened by any flock mate as its an area they can't reach themselves. It seems harsh compared to other pets, like dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and more, that like to cuddle that way but birds are not the same. Mine just want to be near me, they don't need petting to know I love them, they get that when we play by target training and doing tricks. They both grab the clicker and bang it on the table until I start training them, birds dislike sitting still and constantly love mental stimulation and physical movement that training/play provides. Also agree with diet changes needed, though I think the vet was trying to be tactful in how he approached the needed changes for health and rather have a little change at a time, otherwise the clients might bulk so much they won't change anything, making the situation worse, tho was a little lax on the warning about amount of seeds that's healthy :/ ( daily treats yes, full meal, hardly ever, if at all, and never 2x a day) you'd be surprised at how much that impacts hormones/emotions in birds, 1 week on fresh veggies and both my GCCs acted less aggressive and territorial, and they're a forth (or less) of an ecky size. It's easy to get misinformation on birds, go by what the wild ones eat, especially in Australia where several species that can be pets are also wild, and accidentally hurt the pets but easy to correct once you know. Everyone makes mistakes tho and doesn't think or know where to look for good information. I got lucky my breeder had those resources and passed them onto me, some ppl don't have that or got their bird before the relatively new revolution in diet and bird care changes, and may believe in those older ideas bc they haven't been shown why the new information is better and scientifically supported for the birds. I understand sticking with what you know has kept your pet alive, especially because past information was not the best as birds were less common as pets. So while I don't exactly like what I saw, I get how it can happen and seem to be the best way. Also, exotic animal vet's that are trained for exotics are rare everywhere, often the vet does side research or has them as pets and doesn't only focus on those in school, meaning they can be wrong, they are human too.

I appreciate your effort to educate people. Animal Defenders International, a group I support, recently released a Macaw and many other wild animals, back into their homelands! I pray for these creatures that someday soon people will learn to respect them and not think of keeping them as pets or anything else, just let them do the job they were supposed to do, live in nature as part of an ecosystem.

This advice is wrong on every level and could kill the bird, especially the info given on the diet this bird need to survive and thrive. Read a book on Eclectus parrots! Black feathers are created by a fungus formed by the oil in your hands.They pull feathers out of their chests to line the nest, they form deep affections for men and for women.far fewer birds are captured in the wild these days in N America. They are mostly bred.

giving another bird (especially the other gender) would make him bond to the female bird. And the owner will never be able to hold him again.( i work with birds so thats why i know this) Plus, this bird is an eclectus, and finding another one would be a bit hard and expensive..

@Rose Diamond 4, obviously keeping a parrot disrupts their natural behavior. I believe you are correct. No wonder there are so many videos of parrots biting, plucking their feathers out, and all sorts of problems you never see in wild populations where they can avoid humans.All these cute pet parrot videos just keep the suffering going.

Parrots shouldn't be kept alone unless you spend most of the day with them - and if you work full time, it's over 8 hours that your 'tiel is alone. It's perfectly possible to have a strong bond with a bird even if there are other birds around. But even if it pulls away from you a little bit, your bird's mental health should be the most important thing, shouldn't it? I have four cockatiels, two of them never liked humans, but the other two need a ot of love from me as well. The male checks up on me at least twice an hour, and the female is a snugglebug who requires a lot of scritches every day.

@@dragonfly9821 You're just the person I wanted to ask! My biggest fear is that getting a second tiel would mean double the screams. My greatest hope is that getting a second would help reduce the contact calls when I need to put her away, & overall sound. It doesn't bother me too much when she screams, but it does bother my boyfriend. Would it help by keeping her company while I'm working? I've had her for three years, and was a college student who was never away longer than like 6 hours. I'm looking to start an actual 9-5 job this fall, but I feel terrible leaving her, & would adore another bird. I live in Duluth, MN, & don't even know where I can find a hand raised tiel. Depending on the bird sometimes it’s worse to get them a mate. Harry seems to see “mama” as his mate, and is already aggressive towards her husband. Introducing a female could make him bond more with her, and then he becomes aggressive with both humans.

@@stephsexoticpets I think so! But I know you can make exemptions if the bird is used to be kept as a single pet. I think this law is mostly meant to protect future "pets to be" if you know what I mean (I'm not always that good in English😉)

He’s trying to mate with him. Pretty Pastel Please’s bird does the same thing when he’s hormonal. This woman shouldn’t have this bird. She just giggles away about this. This is not a laughing matter at all. He will literally tear every feather from his body.

I had to give up my two incredibly loved parrotlets when my anxiety started affecting them. They picked up on it and one started plucking. It made what I was going through (PTSD-MST from Iraq with accompanying anxiety and major depressive disorder) even worse. I was heartbroken. But I took Slater and Sinatra to a bird rescue place that promised to find them a safe and happy home. And I'm still fighting but now seven years later I have two bunny rabbits, Fur'ocious and Bumble Chunga that know when I need them and comfort me.

I can't begin to imagine the trauma you experience / have experienced, but I am SO glad you have some fluffy buns to help you through. You must be very brave. It takes courage to give up pets, but it sounds like it was for the best. Parrots are SO emotional & have strong social intelligence, so they pick up on everything.
