Great video! Much of Lamelo’s game is extremely unorthodox and is almost the exact opposite of how we were taught to hoop as kids. This only comes with an insane amount of experience and time on the court, which Lamelo had before got into the league. I think people forget how many mistakes Lamelo was allowed to make before he got in the NBA.None of his previous coaches really cared about him missing or turning the ball over, which allowed him to develop faster. His shooting percentages were never that high but the main thing is that he was allowed to develop..Some of the scores in the JBA were literally getting close to 200. Even in HS, he would take the most ridiculous shots.Him and his brothers always played extremely fast and didn’t really care about shooting percentage. I think more coaches should follow this route and let players develop.
One of the guys who was interviewing Lamelo predraft talked about that, like with Chino Hills, they were all free to do what they wanted. And won the state championship when all 3 bros were on the team at the same time. With AAU, most coaches might just care about winning over development
Life long Hornets fan here, Melo's game is so natural that I think if he isn't playing in a flow state, then he wouldn't be in the league. The freedom he plays with is so unorthodox that it is his strength. #BuzzCity
I think one thing he can work on is his change of pace especially around the rim. Moving at one pace can cause him to get block or have to reset. If he changed his pace a bit in the paint it would be way harder for defenders to time also it would allow his teammates to keep up. The pick and roll is where he slows down a bit and it’s the most effective part in his game.
But I think he’s kind the least efficient rim finisher in the league I think sometimes he makes too hard that floater is smooth but sometimes way too far from the basket.
That wide stance shake move makes me worry for his knees long-term. Do you think it's sustainable or that he'll have to adjust and tighten it up a little as he matures? Great breakdown, I love your videos
