Papier d’Arménie triple is the oldest room freshener in paper form, produced in France since 1885. Its typical scent of slightly sweet vanilla with a touch of balsam from styrax resin conjures up the orient.
😊yes. I've just googled it and it says the following: Part of Wolf & Gypsy Vintage 'New' range of products Papier D'Arménie incense paper booklet Established 1885, Papier D'Arménie is most ancient natural room deodoriser 12 pages of 36 pre-cut strips Burn or place them in wardrobes, chest of drawers or books and items will be perfumed with a subtle, delicate scent I guess it was used quite a lot among so many rooms with patients, clothing and laundry. The nuns must have a strict cleaning habits as well as perfumed areas.
I have Armenian papers made by the Farmacia de Santa Maria Novello, a very old maker of scented things. I bought them in Florence some years back and they are like incense in paper form! They smell wonderful! Interesting that they made them in France too!
So interesting, the things that must gave gone on in that place, and with your help allowing us to be part of the discoveries. Thanks Ryan and everyone that's at the convent
Simon has such a calm energy, he is a natural presenter and a patient teacher. I am a 38 year old woman who has never done any plastering in my life and I have just put plaster on plaster board joints. Thanks to your tutorial I felt that I might give it a go and help my father with his DIY project. You are brilliant, Simon. Thank you.
It was very sweet…I think we are going to see Yannis gain much confidence, and really bloom from the relationship of Apprentice, and he would be hard pressed to find a more careful and conscientious Teacher.🖤🇨🇦
@@anitaklamer3360 Very true…we are. He is so generous with his knowledge and skills. I love the dynamics among all the men involved with this project, so many complementary skills, and willingness to share.🖤🇨🇦

@@KathyOnOBX you tear one band of paper, you fold it like an accordion and light it like and encence stick (blow the flame and let the smoke do the job).
You might want to do crayon rubbings of the writings in the spooky room, if they are deep enough to show up. You might find more that are hard to see with the naked eye. Not to mention it would preserve the writings if you needed to renovate that room.
You can find fixation spray in the sketchbook and paint section of any craft store that is designed to spray on pencil and charcoal drawings to prevent smudging. 👍
@@ceralith942 yes, it's often expensive and I got advised on my degree to just buy hairspray as it does the same thing and is often a fraction of the price.
Ryan & Simon together- they’re a trip !! 😂❤ Very interesting today - the French writings on the wall, the buttons & medallions Simon found and the incense papers … Quite a find !!!
Hi Simon, I can confirm that your description of the dormer hoist is spot on. In my youth I used to deliver animal feed to farms in Scotland and have seen this type of hoist in use. Most likely the one in the convent would have been used for lifting sacks of flour, possibly barrels of wine and crates of cheese, possibly to a window or door directly below the dormer.
Yannis is learning from the best! This is an apprenticeship that will be the envy of his mates when he becomes a master himself. Great story about the poisoning and trials.
Simon the medal is of St Magdalene and on the other side is the Sacri Vultus - Holy Face Relic: The Sacri Vultus - Holy Face - Relic is one of a number of images that were created and actually touched to Veronica’s veil in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Very interesting finds and I do think those buttons were from uniforms as the Convent was a hospital at one stage. The inscriptions on the wall was very interesting thank you Moe and Ryan for the translation, I must admit it felt spooky for me too when you were in that room. Ryan and Simon I enjoyed your fresh air with the incense paper Loved it. Have a lovely day.
What interesting items Simon has found. He does a great job describing things also. He works very well on camera, no shyness or nervousness at all. He really adds another dimension to the videos. Thanks for sharing, and have a Blessed day.
So proud of you all Simon, Alex, Yanis and Ryan and loving watching you work. I hope Billy isn’t sneak watching as I’ll love watching his surprise with all the advancements while he was away.
Learning so much about construction and what-all from Simon and Yannis working. Learning French from Ryan too. If I was a much younger 82 yr old, I would love to be there learning myself!!!…. Alas, all is vicarious and so very much fun for me. Thanks everyone.
😅 yes I was thinking about that. I am Italian and in my family nonos and nonas taught us all of us this thing. After the visit to the loo and disguise the odours, light a match, burned some bits of orange peels or those strips d'armenie.
What a great video ❤ The finds are fantastic and the writing on the wall very riveting. I hope there is a follow up on the wall writings. I’m dying to here more!
Love your puppy, Alex! Where is the railings that were delivered a couple of days ago? Simon and Yanis are such a good team. Great research Ryan and Mo!
Ryan there is a wonderful book out now where cancer cells are called "King cells or Emperor cells" . It is called Emperor of all Maladies and is amazingly well researched and has won many non fiction book awards. Written by Siddartha Mukherjee. I do not remember whether or not he refers to Queen cells however. Interesting, yes?
Leebearify poisoning the king and Queen makes sense in relation to cancer cells being called such and it explains the poison/ treatment being given in liquids too interesting information I hope Ryan sees your info
It's really admirable how you're not just giving Yannis a very solid, hands-on education on the job, but also public exposure! Because no matter how good you are at your job, you constantly have to "advertise" it! After all, YOU are the product you sell! And I have a feeling that Yannis will get a much better price than what was originally laid out for him...
Ryan! It’s important to remember that the nuns were subject to all the strengths and weaknesses that any other women have. Some became very troubled or were very troubling! The other sisters looked after one another as part of their way of life. So, if one of them became mentally disturbed, for example, the others did what they could to help the sick sister. Your wall-writer may have been one of those troubled sisters. Perhaps she was one of those people who were implicated in that poisoning plot and was forced to live in house arrest in the convent! That was done sometimes to aristocratic women rather than to put them in a common prison or to put them to death.
The time gap between l'Affaire du Poison and the convent being built is too long for this to have come directly from a prisoner. It could have come from a young maid in attendance on an elderly prisoner who then recorded this in her own dotage.
Yes you are correct. In Mexico they found buried fetuses or babies in the walls of convents or churches. Nuns suffering at the hands of soldiers or priests or having affairs. This convent seems relatively tame for its age. Only a couple of small areas give a creepy feeling - but most of it is lovely, bright and more like a working enterprise. Although I feel the Nuns were taken advantage of by someone selling them on unnecessary renovations and taking their money.
Perhaps at one time the nuns treated the mentally ill or the person(s) who wrote on the wall was given alot of pain medication, and they were hallucinating.
A dormer with a wench reminds me of Amsterdam. The wench is used to move heavy items to upper floors. look at the windows below the dormer area that could have been doors for moving items.
Wow! That was a remarkable bit of history. Really enjoyed Ryan’s translation both with the wall writing and the booklet. As they say no ‘I’ in ‘TEAM’, everybody is simply fantastic ❤
You should take high resolution photos of the writings on the wall for posterity before they get destroyed. You can also use different colored lights (wavelengths) to bring out the writing. There's probably a conservator at a local university who can help with all that.
Simon is a natural teacher. He puts things into a clear logical form to pass them along. Yannis and us are lucky to have him pass along his knowledge and his discoveries. Thank you, Simon. Those inscriptions almost read to me like notes made by a nurse trainee of things which she wanted to make sure to remember.
Gosh, I missed a bunch ... went fishing fell over board my phone went to visit Davey Jones locker along with other things , next day brushed myself off went back fishing caught halibut coho and kings , took a week to get my phone back up and running had to change all my passwords ,Alaskan waters is cold as heck I would recommend it hah but I got to see Cornelius Marie from the Deadliest catch that made my day ... I'm back woot.... Alaska life!
You guys are doing a fantastic job of making these videos. I'm loving them. Billy is going to be well chuffed with your progress. Lots of love from the Netherlands ❣️🙏
You might get a UV light to help see the writing. It sometimes helps bring out some types of dyes. They aren’t very expensive, so you wouldn’t be out much if it didn’t work.
The writings on the wall are interesting. Well done Ryan. I think they sound like the writings of someone who was somewhat disturbed. A convent could well have been somewhere where someone who was psychologically unwell could have been cared for in the past.
Simon, what a treasure you have in Yannis! I love watching his confidence growing on every episode. He seems to enjoy his job and you're mentoring. The Convent is going to look fabulous soon!
Simon...Prof. Mick Aston from Time Team would be proud of you 😊. You're a great stand in while Billy is gone, and the work progresses along nicely. I would subscribe if you had a channel while fixing up your farm/cottage.
Well done Simon you and Yannis make a great team,Simon your a great teacher and Yannis has bloomed under your guidance. What great treasures you’ve found especially the dorma and winch good spotting of it in the photos. Ryan that’s an awful lot of history you’ve translated from the wall especially about the poisoning of the king and queen, wow so much history, i wonder what you guys are going to find next, it’s so exciting. Take care and thank you for bringing us along on the journey 👏🙏❤️
Simon…I’m loving the metal detecting of the grounds, and seeing the bits you are finding. These little treasures add so much to the sense of the convent as a whole…thanks for doing this. Thoroughly enjoyed you and Ryan with the scent paper, and you and Yannis discovering the winch. Great little extras to the amazing skills you display. Watching Ryan and Mo decipher the wall writing was fascinating. Great job on the video and editing Alex, and I have no idea how Duncan works his arcane arts, but it sounds like he knows what he is doing.🖤🇨🇦
Yannis is a new man with his new skills thanks to Simon’s calm teaching demeanor. He has more confidence and a valuable trade experience for his lifetime. Billy, you made this all happen by putting the finest group of people together. I love how they are all holding down the fort while Billy and his family have a well deserved vacation. Ryan, it’s very interesting how you were able to further translate the inscription on the convent wall and refer to some interesting historical facts. Simon’s explanation of the dormer and the winch was interesting and makes total sense. The purified air papers was another cool find. Loved this video. Hugs to all. xx
Duncan's reaction to Ryan's first apartment renovation cracked me up. Thank you guys for making such interesting content, it seems there is never a dull moment at the convent.
Lovely video again. Adore the music and the variety of subjects. So funny: I regognized the round, now flat thing with the dots, Simon found is a thimble. This I know because my ancestor was a tailor and this is an item he used and I just found out today.
Great episode,, had it all mystery, murder, history...Simon is an excellent host & teacher....that's Mary Madeline on the medal opposite Jesus & that little book was used as an air freshener, you'd light it, then blow out and it smoked like incense & made room smell nice... Billy should be proud of you all..
I like Yannis willing to learn and Simon has a way with him a gentle heart love watching him teach someone is trade , love the video's with you're findings I'm interested hope you stay on the team . Ryan you make me laugh at you but you are doing well with you're new home , can't wait to see the finished project and it will be you're new home ❤❤❤
They are still selling the Papier d'Armenie today - my daughter gave me two "booklets" for my birthday and they still look the same, just in landscape format instead of portrait format. Still with the signature on every peace of paper. I got "Tradition" and "Rose" :-)
Another fascinating episode today, thanks guys! 😉👍 As you are nurturing the convent back to life it is gifting you with little glances into how everyday life was lived in times past …how rewarding! You are all a fantastic team and each of you bring something special to each episode making each new episode a much looked forward to treat! Well done! 🙌 Special thanks to Yannis today for making me spit my coffee in laughter as he informed Simon “you did a great job, I taught you well!” Bloody brilliant!! 😂🤣😂👍
Really nice to see Duncan again.Wish he could fix my wiring. LOL Simon is great as always and Yanis got a little laugh in there! Mo was really helpful in translating the words on the wall. I wonder if you would be able to get that plaster off in one piece so you can keep it. Hmm, chances are it will crumble at the first attempt. Alex, lovely video as always and Ryan, you're a great stand in for Billy. All of you are making a great time for us while Billy and Family are on vacation. Be safe and see you tomorrow! 💚
I loved the content today and the music is really pretty as is the convent. Simon you're actually cultivating an interest in technical aspects as I'm now waiting to see how you'll meet the wall studs and the old ceiling beams. Ryan you couldn't be doing a better job. Im envious. Congrats on making it happen guys. I can imagine Billy knows what its like now to look forward to the videos. ❤
Interesting the choice of metric measurement. Simon stated that he set the studs at 600. In Canada, even though we are still in feet and inches for construction, would speak in centimeters when speaking metric. We would call that 60 centimetres, not 600 mm.
OH MY GOSH!!!🤗 Each and every one of y'all are such a needed and amazing part of Billy's team! You each bring something great to the videos and to the Petherick projects! I can't wait for each new video!!❤❤❤
YIKES, THAT BREAKER BOX IS SCARIER THAN ANYTHING CLIVE BARKER COULD PUT INTO A MOVIE ! lol HI SIMON, LOVE YOUR DOCU-VIDEOS DUDE! : ) THANK YOU FOR THEM ALEX!
So far, the content of this channel while Billy on holiday is top notch, guys! 😁💙 That goes for the editing as well, Alex. Always love the beginning montage 🙏
Thank you Simon, Ryan, Yannis and Alex (Phil also) for posting the Pethericks vlogs and giving us our daily dose!🙂You all are certainly gems in Billy's crown - but then lovely loyal and sincere people usually find each other - Great work team and looking forward to the next vlog!!
I love these vlogs... I'm always smiling at the end of them. Brilliant cinematography and great team work. Yannis is doing fabulously and I'm delighted to see him doing so well in the vlogs. Love that he's interacting more. Always lovely too, to see MO doing a cameo appearance. He was looking so suave.
