Susan, thank you for sharing the Merlin Bird ID app. on your website, and your beautiful photography with us. I'm also a bird watcher so I will definitely download that app. I hope you and Bill have a very Merry Christmas. ~Margie🤗🐦☃🎄🎁

Wow Susan. Your photos are spectacular. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talents. My grandson knows a lot of birds by sight and some by sound. It all started when he was a wee toddler and frightened to death by a loud bluejay overhead. We then started learning all we could about birds. We have one feeder and we plan to make our own suet cakes or logs in upcoming projects. I shall visit your page and share with the family. Happy New Year to you and your family.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. You and your grandson might be interested in the free bird-identification app from Cornell Lab, called "Merlin ID." It helps you identify birds from either photos or from their calls, which you can record. It is awesome! Happy New Year to you, too.

Susan, you do such a great job with presentation and information sharing. Whether it’s about birds, gardening, or quilting. I really enjoy watching your videos. Do you ever give tours of your backyard if anyone’s in the Spokane area?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 10 месяцев назад
Hi, Annie. Thanks so much for your very kind comments! I'm asked about tours a lot. Many years ago, Bill asked me to keep our garden private so I've always honored his request. I'm so sorry! But you can pretty much see our entire garden by watching my videos, since I'm often in different areas of it! Take care.

Wow a Blue Heron. Is that common for your area? Love the bird slide show. Just beautiful. Good video. Thanks Susan. Have a good weekend.

Hi, Donna. Thanks so much! Yes, because we have a pond, we occasionally see a great blue heron (much to the dismay of our goldfish!). And those herons are huge. The thing I didn't have room to explain on the slide is that there is a heron decoy to the left of the real heron... I've used one for years because I'd heard herons are rather territorial and that the decoy would help keep them away. It probably has worked a little but but it's pretty funny seeing the real thing to the right of it! Hope you have a good weekend, too.

We have most of those birds in our Z5a also and a couple that are a different variety like the bunting. You have a pretty aqua bunting and we get an indigo that is briefly seen in the spring. We have an all bright red orange tanager and I will never forget where I seen it and was in awe. In the evening the geese, sometimes cranes, fly from the field behind us to the water in front and we always joke about how heavy the traffic is for them on their way home 😅. The news just showed a video where a lady’s chickens froze in place and didn’t know why until they spotted a hawk. If we don’t see birds at the feeder we know a hawk is nearby. We haven’t had chickens freeze yet, maybe soon with their first winter 🥶. Planting shrub and conifers help songbirds to take cover. Lol, it’s no wonder you have quail in your garden as you provided them with a great home.😊 Seen there has been a ton of rain in your area. We are still trying to catch up to a 7+” deficit. Nice informative tips, thank you and enjoy the holidays! Oh and that flicker, I had seen a picture on FB of that beauty with spots and never seen one here and don’t remember if it was up north or east further, but the pick was beautiful. Trying to take a good picture is difficult.

Hi Susan. Love the channel and so much great information. Would be great if you could do a video on how you made the 50 gallon small pond. Do you replace the water in the small 50 gallon pond? How do you handle the algae issue? Do you grow water plants inside that small pond? I noticed something bubbling in that small pond. Do you have an aeration device? Also how do you heat the bird bath in winter.

Hi there. We don't have anything bubbling in the small 50-gallon pond. You might be referring to our big pond, which has a pump and waterfall. As far as the 50-gallon pond, we purchased the pond "form" from a local garden center, then dug a hole and set it in. We haven't had a big problem with algae in it, partly because we have different plants in it (the floating water hyacinths are great for reducing algae). We also tend to put a few goldfish in that small pond during the spring and summer, and then move them to the big pond in the fall since the small pond freezes during the winter. We don't have an aeration device in it but because of the proximity of our sprinklers, the water gets replenished when ever they run. We have a heated bird bath (different from the one that I showed in this video) that we put out in late fall and remove in the early spring. I hope this helps! I'm so glad you have been enjoying my videos.

Wow Susan those are great pictures of birds in your garden. I really don’t like putting in bird seeds because it attracts squirrels and I know there are cages that when they plop on it it shuts by their weight but I would just like to avoid seed all together. I was wondering if the suet is an option that the squirrels don’t like. Thanks for the online resource.

Hi there. I'm glad you enjoyed the bird photos. Re: squirrels, unfortunately they do eat suet. We are lucky in that we rarely see squirrels, so that hasn't been an issue for us.
