I just want to say this was wonderful ❤ I’ve been feeding the birds for the past two years and I watch them gather around the feeders every morning.and it’s so rewarding. I’ve been wanting to do more and this has not only given me great ideas, it has inspired me. Thank you for sharing 😊
Brush piles…and I mean big ones, 8 ft. high by 14 feet wide and have a couple at least …all birds will use for cover and juncos sleep in them plus other animals use them to live in….i love my brush piles!
I bought a heated dog bowl..the only one they had was the big one so I added rocks and put a cheap solar fountain in..I think total of everything was $37..thanks for tips
I have been feeding birds and providing nesting houses for years but your tutorial provided so much information that I didn’t know. I listened to two of your talks and loved them both. Very educational! Thank you.
What an excellent presentation! As new bird watchers in Maryland near DC, my mom and I have identified many of the birds here. Your tips are really helpful. I do want to find a water dish with a de-icing component as we move into winter, and hope to find a video on that subject. Subscribed!
morning.... i'm a newbe at this whole bird feeding thing & live in connecticut. It was nice to finally find a site other then the states that don't experience harsh winters. i've had several bird house outside for a year now & finally 3 of them were occupied this past summer. i got so excited. so i thinking my patience needs alittle work since this is the first year in regards to feeding during the winter months. ur video was so encouraging & informative, can't wait til i have more time to tap into ur complete site. thank u !
Robin eat mealworms….I bought the dryed kind one spring as a robin was already up in Michigan and we got hit with a snowstorm..he was desperate and hungry so i throw some mealworms out and he found them right away and gobbled them up, looked at me and smiled!🤣
I had heard in winter you should put rocks in bottom of shallow dish to make sure they can drink but not take a bath in the cold. Apparently if feathers get wet ice crystals prevent them from keeping warm
Some years ago I have several times been trying the same with the winter fur of my Icelandic ponies in spring, but all the birds weren't interested in at all. An old cover picture of an Icelandic horses' magazine ("Das Islandpferd"/Germany) showed two grazing ponies whereas two ravens/crows were making "self-service" on the back of the ponies whose long winter hair can easily be removed in spring.
What a fantastically informative Video. I think I learned about 30 new insights, tips, ideas & inspirations! Many thanks - Peace to all of our Planets Sacred Creatures, Purveyors of Joy!
When I was growing up in the late 60’s red-headed woodpeckers were everywhere andcommon here in Michigan . My farmer neighbor has one on his property, probably two but I personally havent seen one in decades…thirty years probably…..
I did not realize nijer seed went bad. That is good to know. I stopped using black oil sunflower seeds because they make such a mess, but I have less birds coming. I'll get some today. I don't mind the squirrels. My problem is black bear. They destroy feeders all the time.
I bought two bird houses like what u show a basket type material. I didn’t think the hummingbirds would use it . So I returned them . By watching your video I see now that it’s not just for nesting. They can use it for shelter in the rain. I’m in California and right now the trees have no leaves . I’m in in an apartment I have a balcony. Last week I noticed one hummingbird came in out of the rain to dry off . So maybe I need to order the basket hummingbird basket and hang on a hook with my plant. We can’t hang things on the balcony. We can use the plant hangers. I have sm one in my plants. I don’t have much space. Your video was helpful ty.
Great info! I put a PVC Pipe over my Droll Yankee "squirrel proof" feeder (heavy duty screw in pole) because they really Aren't squirrel proof (just cost alot) At least not in my yard where squirrels are bountiful. That Does Work! Along with Hot Pepper birdseed including suet.
What does, '... PVC Pipe over my Droll Yankee "squirrel proof" feeder (heavy duty screw in pole)' mean? There are many types of PVC pipe and this post doesn't say exactly what size you use and how you put it on.
Birds can get sick from dirty feeders. Stop needless suffering by scrubbing feeders and baths with a brush in soapy water when they are dirty and every 3 weeks even if they don't appear to need it. Rinse very well and DRY very well. Move to a new area, hang, and enjoy! 🐦
I'm going to put a water source in my yard. I have a variety of birds. I'm going to try making a water source Also. I had one on the ground sitting on a milk crate
In general, you want to keep hummingbird feeders away from other feeders because the hummingbirds can be very territorial! They don't necessarily get along with others!
One reason is because the can and will destroy your birdfeeders.they can and will get intoyour house by chewing a way in or find a way in and then you have a roommate…and eventually several…
@@capicuaaa how pray tell do you feed both? In order to feed birds, it is necessary to provide a protected feed station for them. If the squirrels “crack the code” and they often do by breaking into the bird feeders, then the birds are shut out…squirrels take over. Birds leave. Also squirrels raid the garden. Especially the squash and pumpkin. They chew into flesh and while they are at it, they pee on them. Cover the fruits up with netting and they uncover while I am sleeping. Birds don’t get into my garden, as long as I provide clean water and food for them. Lastly, squirrels are rodents, large fluffy rats. Squirrels do a lot of damage to farm crops. Ask a farmer.
Unfortunately the squirrels in my backyard have learned to eat the seeds with the hot stuff on it. It only worked for about a month before they adapted to it. They do go to my birdbath for a drink shortly after they eat.
Ditto, the squirrels in my yard even eat the suet balls that are treated with the hot stuff, they would love the suet but cann't seem to hang on. (YES!!!) I feel sorry for them but they are bigger and fatter and can just go elsewhere (along with the grackles and black birds) ha
I live in the country. My problem is how to clean the birdbath. It is concrete and I have hard water. Have never been able to get it completely clean. How?
A squirrel baffle works great! They can be mounted on a pole, just make sure they are 4-5 feet high, and in a place where the squirrel cannot jump down, or across, from another structure to get on top of it. There are also a lot of great squirrel-proof feeders available. The Brome and Droll Yankee lines have some really great stuff. www.thebirdhouseny.com/product-category/bird-feeders/squirrel-proof-feeders/
The photo on the left around 28:30 I have that happen often. This pic show’s young himmers and adults…i have 8 feeders up and i have hummer galore all summer….i even made a little fountain for them to,spash in🥹😁😁😁
