ATV collides with police car in Connecticut: Quick thinking heroic officer protects pedestrians

Video footage has captured the horrifying moment an ATV driver lost control and smashed into a cop car that had swerved into its lane to protect pedestrians. The ATV driver suffered serious injuries following the collision in Connecticut. The rider was violently thrown across the dashboard as the police cruiser suddenly veers into his lane and stops in front of him to prevent him from driving the ATV on a restricted road. In the video, the cruiser slows and positions itself to block the lane just after families had passed. The ATV lost control, striking the cruiser's front passenger side window. The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital.

He blocked the road as it was restricted road and the bike could see the cop car for at least 150m so should of braked before the last 10m

As a minimum, the behaviour of this hooligan in police uniform should result in charges of grievious bodily harm and, hopefully, he will spend a fair number of years in prison. There are other ways of dealing with anti-social behaviour. Maybe you are in favour of police officers using deadly force against pedestrians stepping on the cracks in the pavement or children using orange space-hoppers without a licence.

The police had gotten compliments about motorized vehicles driving on the pedestrian and bicycle road and began patrolling. If the ATV couldn’t see and stop in time for a full-size police car in the road traveling at his speed, it’s doubtful he would have seen or stopped in time for the family walking on the road.

No, the atv is not designed to make sharp turns at high speeds and anyone with experience would tell you that. No one expects a car to block the road like that unless they have bad intentions and I wouldn’t want to stop. You act as if going around the car is also safe to do so when you don’t know if the other person is out to get you. The cop should have made a u turn and pursued the guy for not driving on the proper roads. Maybe given him a ticket and if he had a bad attitude or on drugs then arrested and his toy impounded. But that doesn’t mean to kill him and say he was going to run over pedestrians. The cop made a bad call, and is trying to justify it. Especially if the cop is in an unmarked car or doesn’t have the usual lights. I especially want to know if the cop put his lights on or if he just blocked the road. It is also hard to see without eye protection at speed.

@@israelgarcia7801 He was on a no motorized vehicles allowed pedestrian/bicycle pathway illegally and speeding with a cop car ahead, you can see the small ATV way before he hit the large cop car. The blacked out part of the narrow pathway was a mother pushing her child in a stroller in front of the speeding ATV.

@@warrgri The cop was patrolling illegal motorized vehicles on a pedestrian path. It would be like if the cop saw an ATV speeding down a sidewalk with a mother pushing her child in a stroller and did not block the ATV from hitting the mother pushing her stroller.

it really doesn't matter what the speed is, if you put an obstacle in the path closer than the minimum stopping distance. you could be doing 1mph and still not be able to stop in time, would you still be speeding?

That is exactly what that insane officer was thinking and probably said to the crippled guy, in his defense. What horrible judgement. The ATV would have had the extra two seconds needed to slow down, and the extra one second needed, to steer a couple feet to the left. Just the ATV rider seeing the cop car would have been enough for it to come to a complete stop, if he was not completely caught off guard by the cop veering into him. A flash of the red and blues would have been enough. I counted about 13 guard rail posts, meaning it was like more than 60 feet, that the cop car passed the pedestrians, before we even see the ATV, which again, would have only needed another second or two, to both break, and steer slightly, safely to the left. That cop must have a clouded judgement, and personal vendetta, and thinks that's justified to use life ending force to enforce a law. And that was not speeding either. It wasn't supposed to be on that road, but that was only too fast to stop because of what that cop felt justified to do.

If the officer had stayed in his lane then the ATV would have passed the pedestrians quite safely. The officer broke the rules of common sense which confused the ATV driver.

@@alanmacification I doubt that he was the only rider to use the road illegally, so do you believe that anyone who breaks any law should have their lives put in serous risk of injury or death whenever they break a law? The pedestrians were clearly visible and were walking close to the side of the road which suggests that the road isn't devoid of motorized traffic which would include electric bikes. Its quite possible that the rider was focused on the pedestrians or something because he was slow to react to the officers absurd and unpredictable maneuver.

Protecting? Are u F serious? The guys wasn’t gonna hit that family. TF u taking about. He was in total control of the ATV. Police is out of control. That’s attempted murder rig(t there. He should be charge with trying to kill that guys! The guy on the STv was not doing anything wrong and was not gonna hit that family at all! This is crazy!

As much as it annoys me that people with quads ride on the road, its very easy to ride around a person walking and chances are the quad had already navigated around a few people while riding down the trail. What's fcked up is that the cop pulls infront at the last second and is actually blocking the entire trail, essentially guaranteeing a collision. Its not a wide trail so he couldnt go around nor could he stop.

Wtf, that cop nearly killed that man for no reason. Maybe he was getting help, obviously that atv got there somehow. But to say that you were protecting a family walking is outrageous. He did not have time to stop because no expects a car or cop to purposely block the road. Terrible judgment call, would have been much better, chasing the suspect and calling it in over the radio instead of trying to pretend you were protecting the public. This cop is a liability to the public.
