I would like to say a huge thank you for the motivation that you give. I am newly retired (this year) and having lived in this house for over three decades, have accumulated a lot of things that needed sorting, not least the paperwork from being self-employed for a large part of that time. The paperwork (old tax stuff and client papers) have always been put to one side until I decided they had to be tackled. It is a slow and laborious task, not least because everything has to be gone over with a fine tooth comb, but also because my reasonably new shredder found the task too much to cope with! I started to cut things up, but that was taking even longer so I got out the weed burner and the garden incinerator and deal with the sensitive stuff that way. Other paper goes in the recycling bin. At the weekend, I decided to go through some more paperwork and low and behold I came across something that has been 'hiding' from me. When I was divorced, the legal fees were attached to my property but I did query them many years ago as being excessive. I actually found the official letter stating that there had been a computer error re the charges and also my solicitor's letter telling me to keep the letter safe, in case it was needed as proof in future. The error had not been put right on the legal system's computer and I was given a figure to redeem it along with a very high rate of interest over the time it took me to pay it. Whenever I queried it, I was given the wrong figure. I provided this proof this week and I have now been told that I am owed (what equates to) over $8,700 dollars! I still have lots to sort out and have done a second pass on some things, but can do it now with the knowledge that it can pay to do it!
My son’s teacher often has her class hold ‘auctions’ where the students can bring things to sell and buy from each other using fake money, as a way of learning about money. I always use it as a chance to declutter things like unwanted gifts or outgrown toys, jewellery and books. Given the age of the kids and competitive environment most things are usually ‘bought’ and my son’s bag comes home empty. But when any items do come home I really know they can be thrown out (whether new or used) with a clear conscience!
My 2023 word for the year will be ....".REorganize ! " As I put the house back in order after the holidays, I will REorganize in those areas that still need work. Just one example, I really thought I had organized my kitchen well in 2022;, but during the holidays I found I wasted too much valuable time hunting for the roasting pan, cookie cutters, recipes etc. So as I REorganize those areas, that need to go through another round of organizing in 2023, I also will be decluttering as I go along.
Writing this in late August 2023... My word for the coming cool seasons is: Simplify! The reason i couldn't figure out how to fit everything left after a big declutter is: there's not enough room for all of it (without it looking messy... and provoking stress)! Time for another round of decluttering! Sending good thoughts and wishes today to everyone!
The first Favorite Thing(s) that popped into my head was my Elf Quest comics collection. But, I have eclectic tastes, & therefore have many favorite things. 😹
People who keep a lot of stuff often see "empty" space as wasted space, that needs to be made useful by being filled with stuff. They do not understand that for some of us "empty" space fills the room with calm and peace and tranquility (like those expensive scented candles).
A lot of people would likely be uncomfortable with my many blank walls. I find them soothing. The few paintings have been carefully chosen and make me very happy.
I downsized this year so let go of most belongings but still have clutter. The clutter tells me that I have unfinished projects / activities. For instance, Christmas cards are on the coffee table even though I mailed cards out earlier and probably won't need anymore. I'll put them away today.
Question 1: "Is this item earning its keep?" Question 2: "Do I want to go to the trouble to pack, unpack, and find a place for this item in the next address?" (There is ALWAYS a next address.) Question 3: Will this item deteriorate, expire, go out of style before I use it again?
