👏 💯 Also, that’s a weak argument. I’ve been a designer in the world of software engineers. I have routinely been the only woman in rooms full of males for the last 24 years. It should have no bearing on why a female today should work for free just because she has female coworkers, and her boss had to go through supposedly such a hard time only working with men when she was young.

This is absolutely spot on. To get a job you need experience. How do I get experience without getting a job? Unpaid internships. But how will I pay rent and eat? Get a job? It’s a stupid system rigged so that only those who are born into the club can become members.

YES! I would have interned in Washington if I could have afforded it during college. But I had to stay home and work at a grocery store so that I could buy books the next year. I’ve heard the line “You think everyone’s out to get you. Nobody’s trying to get you.” so many times in my life, including work settings. I’m sure at times I was overreacting out of my own insecurities, but there have definitely been times where I was gaslit, and this scene kind of confirmed it for me. It’s almost like watching s reenactment of what happened to me at my last job. There are people who will do anything in their power to make the time you spend at work as terrible as they can, while still being subtle enough to be able to project and call you crazy and portray you as the one that’s causing issues. It is absolutely disgusting and a very difficult situation to find yourself in. I feel for anyone who had to go through this or is experiencing it now or in the future. Don’t let them see you upset. Play the game and be smart about it. Manipulate them just like they’re manipulating you, and actively look for another job simultaneously. When you get another opportunity, then let it all out if you feel like you need to. 💪🏾

Concur. I don't manipulate though. I stay true to my morals, ethics and integrity, maintaining consistency, and in the end, even when I was fired, that sent red flags up the chain because they saw a good woman with outstanding work ethics, good relationships with coworkers and customers, but oddly bad evals being fired. I was their best employee, and I knew it. When I saw nepotism\favoritism going on, how it was causing stress, extra shifts, resentment, and drop in morale I addressed my manager that kept pushing it aside. I'm a veteran btw. So I kept addressing my manager about it, asking when they are going to fire the offenders because the discipline wasn't working. Suddenly I was fired. Then the department was investigated, and my manager, dept head, and those people involved in the nepotism ring got fired. So even though I didn't have a job, my former coworkers finally got some peace.

INTERNSHIPS should be REGULATED ... to ensure that employers provide meaningful learning experiences, including structured training, skill development, and feedback. This would make internships a valuable opportunity for students to gain practical knowledge and skills, even if they ARE unpaid. By requiring employers to invest in their interns' growth, internships can become a win-win for both parties, providing students with a free education and employers with motivated and skilled workers.

I haven't seen the movie, but some people here are ignoring the fact that training someone with no experience sometimes takes more resources than what their unpaid labor is worth. So in some cases the only way it makes sense to waste a veteran employee's time on training someone who will likely not stay on long term (students for example) is when it's an unpaid internship. What the other person gains is the experience on their CV, it isn't rocket science and it's not always about nepotism. Saying that as someone who has more money and a better future than my parents had because I took a chance on a relatively low wage job.

Protip for recent college grads: Unpaid internship experience is really not worth much. Other companies know that you were the lackey who did coffee runs and data entry and all the crap nobody else wanted to do, and you did it for free. Most unpaid internships don’t actually train you for the job you want. Don’t take them. It is, in fact, a scam. Instead, get a temporary PAID job as a server at a restaurant or something that will pay your rent, and on your days off, apply for any PAID position in your dream field. Just keep applying, and take anything PAID that gets offered, and start from there.

As a young adult man I worked for a guy for free ,and he showed me a life full of experience that I didn't learn in college, but having both was great. I would recommend acquiring a wealth of experience from someone who has been in the business for many years.

You’re talking about learning a trade, that’s not what’s going on here. This is a corporation extorting young laborers and new entries to the work force by requiring them to work without pay. The only thing this assures in practice is that most of your employees come from generational wealth. If a job grants advantageous hiring to interns, they’re literally _only_ setting a financial barrier. If you want a good employee, shouldn’t you invest in a good employee?

It’s often a woman’s worst nightmare having a female boss and if they believed reasonably thinking or empathetic actions are going to happen from that boss then there is a big degree of disappointment and dissolution waiting for them because it’s all about power and money.

I can't stand the generation of "lecturing women" all mad they were treated unfair only to do the same or worse to someone else. That's called abuse.

Internships don’t come with pay. If you don’t want an internship, don’t go for an internship.

To be fair anyone who had an intern to train knows that most of the time they drain more of your time away from your real job than the benefit they bring to the company so it’s is not that wrong the idea that they are a net negative instead of a net positive for the company therefore paying them make you waste money together with the wasted man hours of the experienced worker that is doing the training. Depends from the job nature of course and the learning curve , for basic jobs they could be useful after 1 week, for others after 6 months that could be still a simple liability purely because it’s not enough time to become Independent in that specific task. My suggestion would be if you have 0 experience (but believe to be such a wondergirl) to accept the free internship, demonstrate in the first weeks that you are valuable and after the first month say “ either you pay me or I leave”

The millennial life. We work harder than any other generation before us but we’re “spoiled” when we want to get paid for it.
