Many thanks for answering my point about ivory fakes - and good to know that when the sale of antique ivory was legal, there were very few fakes about. RE rhino horn - in justice to China, the rapid decline of rhino populations in the 1960s-1970s was directly connected to the rise of the Arab oil states and the growing demand for rhino-horn handled daggers as a staus symbol - documented in the book "Run Rhino Run".

I actually don't agree with Peter's take on this, some of the modern carvers are so good in China its likely they are able to replicate some periods of Chinese ivory without you being able to tell. Some 18th and 19th century stuff is still so clean and pristine as long as a carver can replicate the style well you will would never know. I think he is also being bias from the point of view of a dealer and trying to downplay the issue, 'oh there was very minimal fakes and they were poorly done', like htf does he and other dealers really know? Similar issue with coral as well, if a skilled carver is good enough to replicate old styles you are never going to know as well and you can bet they are doing it, when thousands of dollars are to be made.

Hi Peter, great video this week! What is the deal with those gigantic lots? Do consigners just want items gone all at once? As an auction house I don't know why you'd want to do that because of the potential revenue loss.

The bowl estimated at 3k to 4k is because people in house wants to bid on it by meeting low reserve price.
