Settings -> privacy (under app permissions go to "microphone" and make sure the permission is turned on)

Wish I'd read this comment first, took me another hour to figure out what was wrong after watching the video and remembering there'd been a recent update and yep - the privacy setting on voice record had changed.

When I attach the beat that I wanna record too, I start a new track to add my vocals, but when I lay my vocals onto the beat its recording my vocals along wit the beat so when I play it back an mute the beat, I can hear the beat begin recording wit my vocals on the same track that I’m jus adding only my vocals too. Why is that?

hey ! i need your help. when i record on audacity i usally use my apple headphones but when i plugged them in it wont let me record now. i went to audacity and clicked edit then clicked preferences and under recored it said no divice found and it usualy says headphones i clicked out of it and re opened it but it says the same thing please help

Hi thanks for your video.im having a problem with my m audio interface and using audacity, using my Yamaha modx synth to record.im able to lay the first track down in audacity but when I try to record a second track and over dub, it won't start recording. Very frustrating tried everything to try and sort this issue out!

Thank you. I realized first the MME sound is became noisy which not from the microphone so I tried WASAPI which was awesome but could not play back. After I checked what you say in this video and problem solved. THX again ;)

Do you have any advice for a "audio dropout detected" I've been trying to record my podcast now for two weeks and we get this error and it stops the recording in audacity and kills the mic in streamyard on Google Chrome.

Great summary of troubleshooting steps. A question, if you see this and get a chance: Is there a way to get Audacity to recognize a microphone (or microphone interface) that was not yet plugged in when Audacity started? (I mean, without re-starting Audacity.) The real-life scenario is: I'll have several Audacity projects sessions open; then I turn off the USB audio interface that is my recording device" in Audacity, and I don't come back til, let's say, the next day. I turn the audio source back on, but Audacity won't recognize it until I close ALL instances of Audacity and open Audacity again. I would like to do some version of "refresh" to help Audacity see the newly enabled audio source, without closing all instances of Audacity. The audio interface is already set as the default recording device in Audacity's Preferences. Any ideas? Thanks..

In the Device tool bar, second box over, with the "core audio" box on my left... it reads "Built-in microphone" in order to record off my turntable it needs to read "USB Kodak"? The box won't drop down with options, it will only highlight it blue and give it a check mark... Where's the tutorial to fix this problem? Thanks....

Thanks bud, you helped me fix an issue with overdub not working in Audacity with my Rode NT1/AI-1. I managed to solve it by going into microphone properties and changing the default sample rate in advance settings to 44100. God bless.

Mine was in waspi and I changed it to MME now its back with no error but it kept saying invalid sample rate and I went through every rate to choose and it still an error.

Hey buddy, thx for the video - was well done. So I did everything mentioned in the video and I still got the error msg in Audacity. I also can hear myself through my speakers and headphones when I talk into my microphone so it could be a hardware issue? (I'm using a Scarlett focusrite as my interface so maybe it has something to do with that?) I receive that same types of error messages in other DAW's so it's not Audacity. Any help or points of reference would be appreciated.

I did everything he listed and I still can't get mine to work. I'm using Scarlett Focusrite too and I can hear myself through my headphones. It keeps giving me the "Error opening sound device. Try changing the audio host, recording device and the project sample rate." I reset my PC before opening up audacity after a while of having it downloaded, wondering if I maybe got rid of some important files?

I am using a Rode NT1-A with a M-Audio Interface. Sound is still being received through the speakers and headphones but I have tried all the steps you suggested in this video and Audacity still comes up with the error when trying to record. Do you think this would still be the sound card problem?

Like you said I get the message error can not open sound device. I have tried everything I can think of no luck your clip said type services.msc I did so the dropdown screen that says windows end point does not show up at all go figure thank you.

I finally got it to show windows endpoint it shows it running I shut down and restarted computer anyway no luck help
