Very common problem with camshafts in 2.5 TDI (video here • A6 C5 2.5TDI AKE air f... ) solved by replacement. Replaced all camshafts with tappets, valves and also the camshaft belt with all equipment.
Cost: 7000 PLN (about 1650€)

Have the same engine , still driving it daily. Had to replace the cam shafts tappets and rockers @ 300K. I've done this in 2021 and costed me ca. 2000Euro. Didn't had other problems though. My only complaint is fuel economy , its garbage.

Hi. If I would have to sum up, I would say the same. After replacing cams I had other known problem - injection pump. Besides that it was one of the best cars I had

hello, I have a ake engine in my Audi 2002, it has 230 000 km, I changed the gas pump 1400e i changed all the bearing on the wheels 500e, changed oil for automatic gearbox 450e, timing belt water pump all belts and some nozzle 850e. I change the engine's oil every year, do I have to be scared for what u said ? thx

Just put a good oil, don t rev it while it s cold and you re good to go

Hey man. there is still some slight tickering, is that normal? Of course the knocking noise has gone, but there is a slight ticking noise I hear...=?

Yeah, you are right. It turned out after some time, that one of the camshafts was damaged so they fixed it on warranty. Now it is running fine.

Thats the engine code. AKE is 1st gen 180HP 2.5 TDI

Mi Kado tak średnio bym powiedział. W tym tygodniu oddaję do mechanika po 18 000 km, bo coś mi się hydraulika tłucze w lewej głowicy...

@@lukasz2621 okazało się, że jeden wałek był fabrycznie źle wycentrowany. Wymienili na gwarancji wszystkie jeszcze raz

Hi, it was the garage job. Unfortunatelly it wasn't a preventive job, my engine just stopped one day and didn't want to run anymore. It costed me around 7000 PLN (that's a polish currency), so about 1600€ or 1700USD

Thanks for the answer. That is quite expensive! There is man with 788.000KM A6 2001 2.5 here in the Netherlands and it's still running on it's original cams, he bought it from the showroom back in 2001, so they can run for so long if proper maintenance I assume.

Well, the proper maintenance is the most important thing for these engines, especially changing engine oil every 10 000 km/1 year, using a good engine oil, bacause all models from the beginning of the production till the middle of 2003 had a factory defect with engine lubrication. It is also a good practice to go to the good car service so someone will take a look at these cams from time to time, just to be sure you won't need to spend that much money, that I had to. About the guy, he is really lucky that he went that far without replacing cams, especially that 2.5 TDi from 2001 has probably 155HP which is the most exposed for these kind of issues or 180HP (engine code AKE) which is only a bit better. Only last models from 2003-2004 with engine code BGE (163HP) or BAU (180HP) had engine lubrication issue finally fixed. Probably he is one of the very few people in the world with so many mileage behind on original cams, so I hope he won't need to replace it soon.

Yes it's quite rare. My 2.5 TDI is a fun project, when the cams goes to heaven I will replace them. Luckly I've got another daily driver 1.9 which are bulletproof engines. But I had before a 2.5 with alot of timing belt problems, those threads where stripped, than the M8 bolt broke, then there whas a oil leak, after 30 times the belt on and off it was finally fixed. Now the new 2.5 I have now is already modified, replaced the thermostat recently, without problems. Only the oil intercooler leaks. Now friends of mine call my Audi a " oil ship " since I leaked on their driveways :P

@@andreastheile426 No they don't. This V6 is actually one of the smoothest and coolest sounding diesel engines. It just makes you wanna red line it, pulls nicely all the way to 5k. No vibrations in the cabin at all. Also, too quiet inside and outside.
