Audi R8 Spider Review - the last V10! 

I’ve owned a V10 Plus for three years. You didn’t XPEL (ppf) protect, you aren’t putting premium fuel in, and you are under valuing an average of 17MPG on a V10. You should launch in sport, not performance. Performance mode takes traction control off. The carbon ceramics grind at slow speeds. If you clean it, the surface needs to be properly lubricated or you will scratch it. Most of your complaints are your errors (respectfully). I replaced my paddles with carbon fiber ones, but agree with the plastic paddles. The reverse camera is garbage, agree. You are putting S class expectations on an entry level super car. Love your spec (mine is Nardo). I wish you’d actually read this.

These cheap shiftpaddels confuse me. Audi has original full aluminium paddels in the RS6 and RS7 part number is 4K0951523F and i retrofitted them into my 2.0 tdi a4 :D And they would just work plug and play in the R8...

youve launched the car in manual mode every race, then it forced itself to shift, unlike the launches that worked the dash said M1S which means the gearbox is in sport, in the launches that have bugged you it was in M1(you need to shift the car) and then when you redlined it the gearbox shifted itself to M2S

The R8 is such a special thing. Perfect combination of understated design with an absolute gem of an engine. It'll be sorely missed. As for a new daily driver, if it's another convertible, probably either a Mercedes-AMG SL 63 or an Aston Martin DB12 Volante.

My Golf convertible does the same heater trick. When you lower the roof, it remembers the last heater settings you had with it down, hot or cold! Brilliant. 👍👍

His complaints that it’s got no adaptive cruise control for (long journeys) and it’s not comfortable enough. It’s a supercar it’s not made for that. That’s your fault if you drive it as a daily driver

No adaptive cruise control is absolutely bizarre for a premium convertible.

I love the AA wireless, my car only has wired Android Auto and I have to leave the phone on the car seat while using this feature. Thanks for the heads up on this device Matt.

Petrol in the UK is so cheap. In the Netherlands we pay roadtax per quarter what you pay per year in the UK and the petrol is 2,20 euro a liter

MAT! The reason your Audi was bogging down is because you were launching it in second gear. The times where it launched perfectly, the car was in 1st gear. Look at the video and you'll see the gear displayed in the video.

Wireless CarPlay is not all that for audiophiles like myself. Bluetooth reduces sound quality- all cars should give you an option to use wireless or wired.

I had an R8 V10 spider with carbon ceramics for 4 years. Never had any problems with the brakes, but overall, the car was not as fun to drive as the 991 Porsche 911 4S that I had previously. The 911 was not as powerful, but it was lighter, more nimble, better handling, better steering feel, more modern interior and electronics and more joyful to drive on twisty, technical roads. Yes, I loved the engine in the R8, the power and the sound were amazing. But everything else about the 911 was better. Overall, I feel like buying the R8 was a mistake.

I had the opportunity to drive one a few weeks ago. So glad I did. Bucket list item for me weirdly. I own an RS3 because of the engine. My friend let me drive his R8 and the sound of both my car and his, identical, but his is wayyy better haha!

it was bogging because it prematurely upshifted to 2nd after hitting the rev limiter. probably could be fixed by flashing the trans to remove the auto upshift feature in manual mode

You get less miles with E10 With E5 you would get the mpg it should do and maybe a bit more. Don't believe me Well get two of the same car Fill one with E 10 and one with E 5 and then see which car does better for the full tank

I’ve a gen 1 V10 and was thinking about getting a basic Lambo Hurrican, the Audi is sensational so I’m not sure if it will be the right move (extra £60k too!)

Mat, your R8 wasn’t running right because you kept switching the gas back and forth. If your really using the vehicle(like you are), you need to always put the top you can use, not try to save money

I wish we had those plastic gloves here in america! That is a very good sanitary thing to do! Everyone touches those handles! You get twice the mpg in your car than I do in my c7 z06. 😂 the milage I've put in it for the 4 years I've owned it is about the same amount you have put in your r8 in a few months 🤣 my average is just under 9 mpg 😂 that is with 90% city driving.

no no no no no, adaptive cruise is the worst, it stops u like 1000ms even in the close up version to the car in front. I hate it. As someone who's an ex pro racer I HATE all assists including the annoying lane assist when ur by urself and u don't indicate to switch lane

Haven't thought of this before, but this video made me think how much the different octane fuel impacts the drag races. Especially in turbocharged cars, that can make quite a difference.

That low rumble is what I always loved in the old 6.2L NA AMGs. Ever since I was a kid I liked that kind of sound way more than the high revving, high-pitched Ferarri kind of sound.

Haha, you’re driving an R8 and not pumping the best fuel you have available into it? So you can save what ? 5 quid. Then complaining about drag racing…it’s probably detuning itself some because of that. Launching have to be in “Dynamic” not Performance , hit the ESC button once, and then launch. I do think Audi changed the programming of the launch at some point. When new, launched awesome. After about two years, after getting a service, I noticed the launch changed. Seemingly if the car detects tire slip it bogs and tries changing gears early. Actually have never tried to fully disengage ESC for a launch, not even sure it would work. Honestly I hate adaptive cruise control. You end up getting stuck behind a slow car and sometimes you don’t realize it for a while, then you look down and you’re going 60mph behind the car ahead and you have to manually speed up around the car anyway. Id rather just do it myself. The paddles? Non-issue, nit picky… could care less what the paddles sound like as long as they work the second you pull one, which they do in Performance mode. Wireless carplay/android auto, it’s just a product of its time, Audi came out with wireless connectivity about two years after these came out. The cord isn’t a big deal. I’ve owned numerous 911’s, and other sports cars, and to date this is the best all rounder by far. And don’t let the magazine articles fool you, they make it sound like the car is compromised toward the GT side of the equation and gives up a little of the sports car side. Wrong. I go on “spirited” drives all the time with many other exotics, and the R8 is so confident inspiring I can pretty much walk away from all of them once the roads get twisty. And I’m talking 720S’s, GT3’s, RS’s, etc. cars that are no joke. But they’re a little trickier to drive fast, have to be on your A game. In a straight line, it can hold its own against any of the other NA cars, but the turbo cars will walk away. But Id rather have the confidence in the corners over the straight line speed. Great car and extremely reliable. Have 40K miles on mine and never a single issue.
