And welcome to another video where we finally manage to put the never ending story back on the wheels. This Audi S6 was in a really sad state when the car was delivered. Suspected with head gasket issue and surly very short afterwards it was confirmed with loads of other issues. Rusty oil sump for engine and gearbox, oil leak everywhere, water pump leaking, timing belt tensioner failed, exhaust fell apart, suspension had enormous play , brake calipers were seized up, oil leaks from the gearbox and many more small bits.
We thought in the beginning the car would be done much quicker but we didn't realise the car is actually 22 years old. After a few phone calls half of the parts that we needed were not available any more. So research started .... Coolant O ring gaskets were delivered from abroad , sumps needed refurb because they are not available any more, brake calipers were available but the supplier messed up the order three times in a row. And finally when it looks like we are done, our own mistakes catch up.
We didn't put the timing chain between camshafts in the correct position and after a short start up and run we had incorrect correlation faults showing in the engine ECU. Luckily it's not an engine out job , but the pain and fed upness was in the air. Front end needed removing which means coolant , hydraulic and gearbox oil will have to be drained.
After this issue was sorted we went for a test drive and shortly afterwards the coolant pipe from heating metrix POP so we were losing coolant. Luckily only at higher RPM so the hose was replaced afterwards. Also once the engine warmed up we had issues starting the car and after a few attempts the engine light came on. Luckily just a faulty sensor was quickly replaced and we were back on the road. While test driving this S6 on the roads we met another Quattro that probably ran out of talent because the car ended up off road on a rig . Definitely did enjoy this future classic on the roads but it was time to go back to the owner. Really hoping we will see the car next time again just for oil change.

Love these cars, so understated for what they are. I had a 2003 C5 RS6 for a few years, fastest car in its class back in the day, able to outrun a 911 Turbo of the same age in a straight line. Averaged 21mpg, 5mpg when my right foot felt heavy. Had to pass it on to a good home when setting up my business. Expecting to find and buy a lovely example of a C5 RS6+ in the next year. Miss the V8 burble on startup and idle.

I had an A6 4.2 up until 6 months ago. Bitter sweet relationship. Clogged oil passage required an engine swap Gearbox failed due to crack in one small high pressure oil line at 380k kilometres. The rest of the gearbox parts were good for at least another 100k if the clutches were not overheated The coil packs die very often, the cooling system needs to be 100% perfect or the engine is getting hot. But after watching this video I feel nostalgic. It was a great sleeper, very nice to drive, big and comfy. Great job of saving this example and giving it some more life! Great channel, great content! Keep up the good work! Would love to see some more C5/D2 and even C4 cars :)

I have a A6 C5 2.4, automatic gearbox, with LPG 1998 144.000 miles and I love it. I don't exercise "dynamic drive", just let it cruise an do it's thing and it serves me very well indeed. I did the timingebelt and everything that goes together with it, exchanged every seal (including crankshaft) and the generator (120 Amps plus 100 Amps battery), but without ripping the heads of, because there was no reason for it at all. Very fine car, if you don't intend to race it. Sparparts in Germany is absolutely no problem at all. Plus no timing chain in the back of the engine, (disgusting)and no DIRECT INJECTION, HIP HIP HUUUUURRRRAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY .................... The old cars really are the better ones. @@VAGTechnic Well I do understand this. Cars with powerfull engines like that are used to chase / rase them, with all the consequences that go together with it. Using LPG however means no to rase it to avoid exessive tenpretures in the cylinder head. I really enjoyed this vid, which gave me valuable insight, unless both engines are basically the same. Hey man thank you. If you are looking for relyable sorces for spar parts in Germany, let me know, in the comment, I will further contact details for you.

I renewed the cam timing chains and tensioners on my 4.2 and the two sides cost me £1100 from an Audi dealer. Then when it came to timing the cams I found the Bentley manual was wrong. I forget exactly but the Bentley said something like 15 teeth to the timing mark when it is in fact 16 teeth which I found out after extensive googling on the internet. That Bentley manual is useless and it cost a bomb. Major headaches for me thanks to rusted bolts were the crankshaft pulley and the cooling fan bolt removal was an absolute nightmare. Thankfully the timing belt was a breeze. I just needed two special tools, the crankshaft lock pin and the bar to lock the cams together. Undoing the plug for the crankshaft lock pin is a major problem however with the engine in place. Taking the engine out like these guys is a step too far with even more rusted bolts to undo. Satisfying once done. Also renewed some hydraulic lifters which was good as some were quite worn. At least Audi could source the parts still even though there were lots of raised eyebrows that someone was even bothering with an old 1999 4.2 A6. But it is such a great car, and how else can I afford a 300bhp car?
@stephanieanderson6394
@stephanieanderson6394 Год назад
I think the spec is 15 Links, but that means 16 pins, because one counts the pin at the beginning of the first link and the end of the last link. Some people on the internet are saying it is 15 on one side, and 16 on the other. I can't imagine that is correct. I'm about to try this job. I'm going to count 16 pins and keep my fingers crossed.

I did also the cam chain mistake but it was a A6 2.0tfsi. I timed the intake cam only by looking the cam and it went one tooth wrong. The reason was that when tensioner tightens the chain, intake moves by one tooth. Otherwise its very easy to set correctly.

Ah yes, one of the most useless meters in the dash, battery voltage. However the waterpump housing broke off completely one day in traffic jam with my RS4 B5. When i looked at the battery voltage it was below 10v all of a sudden. Because the belt went along with it as well, the dyno was'nt turning anymore and everything was on battery. @@paullorman8924 I did'nt take the risk. The whole aluminium thing came right off together with the water pump. No idea, i was'nt driving hard, fast or idiot enough to make it break. Cylinder head bolts that are torque turned should never be installed dry. Always lubricate the threads, the washers and the underside of the bolts to ensure there is little resistance when angle tightening. As a general rule, always add a small amount of lubricant between threaded fasteners.

Love your videos espec this one bcz pulls q that in my opinion is big shame on Audi, discontinuing spare parts on many models (car ended in scrap yard bcz final drive parts i tried without success to outsource almost whole yr). My car was probably the last one with completely galvanized body so no touch of rust on and the last one that didn't require PhD to do front wheel alignment. For engine issues going to dealership was not option bcz guys there were trained to rely on WAG and older models were out of their comfort zone. Only solution is to find wizard who feels Audi or arm yourself with Bentley manual (and probably the best forum ever) and try to understand philosophy behind Audi engineering. While backyard wrenching I often had impression BMW and Audi are competing who gonna make assembly/disassembly more complicated but in my opinion Audi is clear winner. In another hand it was the best daily drive I ever had, pure joy driving, feel in control all time. I miss it.

He mentioned so many times how old the car is, like it's so horrible. (well this gearbox IS horrible 😁) I still find all necessary parts for my 1.8T a4 b6 from the sam era. Generally I find ppl tend to write off cars too easily. I think "older" cars are way much better then newer ones. Newer cars have so much ecology stuff plus a ton of electronic and gadets all waiting to malfunction. Not to mention all those engines with the tiking drives in the back 😱 It's all fine and dandy and cool while it works but it's gonna brake the bank if it doesn't. Also build quality has deteriorated as opposed to earlier cars. Lot's of plastics, hollow metal, profile mrtal instead rigid etc..... 🤷‍♀️

Tricky part is to put the timing belt back on with adjusters of the right timing chain position of 16 & 15 teeth, respectively. Beforehand research done on the internet plentiful. On mine I guess the intake manifold is somehow leaking and needs to get fixed better renewed. Symptoms: engine has been shaking (sort of vibrating) at idle more so after warmed up like having ignition problems (but no light on the dash). And also loosing power gradually - it feels like having ignition problems again - while driving with the engine warmed up. Cold engine - it drives faster and smoother as normal as it should. As soon as it gets warmed up driving on the motorway after a while it then feels like having issues with ignition. So it's depending on the coolant temperature how it drives normal. Weird thing is all the long & short trims are behaving normal and also within specs +3 - 3%. Maybe some issues with the head gaskets or catalytic converter, hope not! PVC valve? Any comments on that issue ...!? Also bought some injectors of second hand because the existing ones might be malfunctioning; very lean condition of A/F Ratio prevailing. Thanks

Can you remember which side is 16 teeth and which 15? Thanks
@sencanboz2645
@sencanboz2645 2 года назад
@@johnking1381 as I did you need to find it out on your own doing a lot of work of research probably on the internet or asking a mechanic if you are not sure. The most tricky part has been here for you to come with it being aware of that unique timing condition on each side that is different 16 -15. I guess not everyone did it right and got caught falsely. I d done it at first sight and properly and successfully as well. And also timing belt when you put it back on needs to be dealt cautiously, the more you do it precise the more you will get better results while the car is running after. The timing on that type of machine has been constructed that way. Good luck!

I have the 2001 S8 basically the same engine. Can't even get an engine mounting which needs replacing. I don't suppose these S6's also have electronic engine mounts and might be the same?

I'm putting one of these engines into my manual 2.8 quattro soon, I've just done the subframe bushes and I'm going through the driveline now. I will be using a 6 speed 2.5tdi box behind it. Can I ask about the timing correlation issue, is it supposed to be 16 links on one head and 15 on the other? Great video, subscribed, great cars these.

What a gorgeous car, goodwood Green right? I'd love something like this, I currently own a 2005 c5 allroad 2.5tdi with a lot of power (for what it is) and have a 1997 golf vr6 highline as a weekend/toy car....would love something a bit bigger and with a great v8 in it! Do you guys own the car in the video?

Great work as always. One thing though,surely after all that work , parts labour ect the bill must have been huge. Depends what the owner wants to spend but IMHO that car was a scrapper, a parts car. You would never get a return on the money spent..

Sorry about you not getting parts quickly. I had to change both my VVT adjusters and get the timing back in order and a few gaskets, belts, & pulley’s replaced. What I want to know is, since the gearbox has that many miles on it and you did the refresh how’s is going? Would you say it’s recommended to refresh the gearbox as it gets up in age or should I replace with the manual from the S4 with the same engine just chain driven? 2002 S6 owner in the US.

Nice job! Did you remove the engine again to fix the timing chain settings?
@VAGTechnic
@VAGTechnic 2 года назад
No , just front end , had to retime the whole belt afterwards… still pain … Hydraulic out , coolant , put the timing pin in to the block

If the owner was to sell his vehicle now, considering the costs incurred in the work in this video would he brake even or have any profit. Or was the spend irrelevant and he just wanted to preserve the vintage Audi?
@VAGTechnic
@VAGTechnic 2 года назад
Well it’s easy … these cars need doing now or otherwise no parts available… in year or two might be too late to start such a project …

@@VAGTechnic I’ve a 2015 RS5 as a “keeper” so I’ll bear that in mind. How many years do manufacturers keep spares and after they stop stocking them how long after that will there be available?
