Today's review/demo is of the 8-channel external preamp unit - the ASP880 by Audient. This one has variable impedance, and switchable insert points inbetween the preamps and the ADC section per channel (which also doubles as 8 inputs straight to the Burr Brown ADC section if you have separate external preamps).

I still have a 880 and the patch points are great for the reasons you mentioned and I use the DB connection and a modest patchbay to choose between my Neve Shelford strips , UA 610 & 710, the burr browns or the Apollo unison, lots of options very easy to use, I had some custom combo/DB-25 patchbays made up from LA sound for direct mic xlr connectivity, I use phantom blockers so I’m not frying any royers but I haven’t in over 40 years with a 2 man shop it’s not difficult to protect your gear, just don’t hot swap

Hi, another great video. Thx. I actually have the 800 on hold at a local shop but a bit on the fence whether or not I should go with the 800 or 880. I love the first 2 channels on the 800 but toying with the idea of adding more outboard gear in the future, probably won't be for at lease a ear or so if I do. Today I'm mostly ITB. Do you have a prefernce of which ASP you like better?

Even if I record solo I want to have the Guitars Mics Acoustics and Basses set up and plugged in. So I can go to each instrument while jamming over loops.

Man! These comparisons are phenomenal.. I’m just confused by how your voice through the sm7 appears to sound even fuller in the 800 rather than in the 880 with high impedance.. but I guess the snr is key here.. I’m rethinking and updating my system, so I’ll start with the 880 and eventually add 8 extra channels via Adat with the 800 model. That means I’ll probably get an Id 44 mkII in order to get 2 adat in&outs. Audient definitely owe you something 😊

Hey, thx! Very good Infos concerning the unit. If I have an external compressor connected to it. Can I use it in conjunction with my Apollo 8 interface? Sending it out through the Adat Output of the Apollo into the Compressor connected to the ASP880? And can I keep other Mics connected to the Preamp Inputs of the unit? So that I can switch between using the compressor or the preamp? Is that possible? Cheers

Which would you recommend as a main source of clean preamps/adc? Im looking to use with my 2626 where I use the line inputs with analog pres and use an adat conventer to add channels. The fat channels makes me think about the 800 but Im thinking id be better off getting some dedicated 'coloured' pres like the Stam Audio or Warm Audio stuff. DId you really notice the added clarity and headroom in the 880?

The 880 was certainly very clean indeed. Headroom is subjective, but they’re not coloured at all. If you’re thinking of getting “coloured” pres at any point I’d still recommend the 880 because you can patch those pres straight to the ADC section, completely bypassing a second preamp- even though they’re super clean, if you want a pure signal path this is the best way at this price point imo

Good to know, yeah the direct to ad inputs is great and if the pres sound nice and have little noise they are great for lots of cleaner sources.

if you apply different filter on correlated sources, you'll mainly ended up with phase cancelation on your entire drum kit ^^

Not when done properly in an analog filter, this isn’t an active EQ band

@@adamsteelproducer you still get phase rotation with passive filter. The only way to don't rotate phase with filtering or eqing is to go FIR. Some doc here www.electronics-tutorials.ws/filter/filter_3.html

Maybe, but I don’t remember it being an issue when engineers would use literally any desk with variable HPF on any classic recording of the last 50 years...

@@adamsteelproducer it is not a problems if we know what we're doing. And fifty years ago they didn't had the chance to have almost unlimited eq band. Bell filters have far less impact on the phase of a signal, it is also a good solution to clean up the bottom end :)

Did you end up keeping the ASP880? Thanks for the reviews of this and the ASP800. Any preference between the two?

Hey- I did not, I sent it back- a decision which I think I regret in hindsight. The 800 was the one that suited my needs better, with the super channels (iron is awesome btw)- the sound is practically identical but if you need insert points/access straight to the ADC the 880 is the one for you

Thanks for your reply. I only have two individual pres, the Great River ME-1NV and a Slate Digital VMS. I run them both in through the back of an RME Fireface UFX. I do not plan on purchasing more individual preamps or any hardware eq's or compressors. I am also using a UAD 4-710d and a Focusrite isa 428 mkii attached to the UFX through adat. I am thinking the ASP800 will do the trick for me, as I would like to have enough quality pres to have my drum kit set up and not have to mess with the pres used for the drums very much (or at all) during sessions.

Sounds like you’ve got a solid plan there, especially with the digital 428 card in there. The ASP stuff is great on drums if you want a super clean, fast punchy sound a la SSL, works for what I want!

Not on it's own, no. If used in conjunction with an interface that accepts external word clock then yes.

I want to record 8 channels thru audient preamps and simultaneously record my other 8 outboard preamps of the audient line out split signals at the same time. In short Is there a way it can be used as a splitter?
