Audio Gates & Expanders Explained #1

In this tutorial I am explaining the functions of a gate/expander and what effect that it has on our signal. It has an influence on the dynamic range that is exactly the opposite as to what a compressor does.
We can use it to 'mute' background-spill or unwanted noise in between the dynamic peaks of our signal.

HI Ronnie, Indeed I talk more about the gates since most people only want them for their 'extreme purposes' e.g. completely muting spill in between sounds. An expander can be used when the dynamic range of something needs to be larger. Most expanders do this by attenuating sounds below the threshold, so it makes soft sounds softer. It could for example be used in an attempt to reduce the level of background sounds on a voice-track. (in between phrases that is)

The best channel on youtube about audio topics, becouse you explain theory, how works gear..i hate when people talk like...set volume to -5db...set attack to 20 or similar stupid advice beouse evrything is relative and depends of many factors...you explain the hurt of thing...very halpfull!!!!!!!!!

Im just starting out to record at home and i having some trouble mixing my guitars, i didnt even know what compressor or noise gate actually do, but i hear them mentioned in lot of mixing guitars forums etc but they are never explained. i was tweaking aroun on my own not even knowing what the hell am i looking for. Now its become SO much simplier thanks to you cause i actually know what am i doing and what am i looking at and for.

... you wrong... if the atack is SLOW the compressor will take more time to react, leaving the transient pass through ... otherwise, if the setting is FAST than the compressor will KILL the first attack or the transient of the sound.

Better to think of it as a internal fader that controls the output volume level, rather than just a gate that opens and closes. In fact it is a volume controller in digital form.
