I think TV shows purposely make them quieter so you crank the TV for -12 DB, then ads come in at -3 or higher and blow your ear drums out

This is an excellent starting point and it's crazy how often good audio can be overlooked. And it's not even just about gear! A manager used to tell us commercial editors that a good video started with good audio, and I think that's 100% true. I know you've done a lot of with audio before, but I think focused stuff like this is essential viewing. If you do a followup video, maybe for the more advance viewer, it would be great for a good comprehensive conversation about Loudness, its measurement, and how it's a more accurate indication your mix and volume than the True Peak indication of dB. Loudness Standards are weird to read sometimes, but consistency is their goal and I wish I knew more about them a long time ago. This would specifically help those who deliver for services, such as ATSC standards for American broadcast being -24 LUFS, which /can/ be somewhere around -18dB when looking at true peaks, though there's some difference for certain! What kinda...stinks about Loudness metering if you need to use a Loudness Radar and play your audio through it to have an accurate measurement of where it lands, and can see the problem areas you need to treat. RU-vid I think has been tossing their hat into the Web standard ring lately, but it may be only for 'music video' style content, but I think their standard is -16 LUFS, which comes in i /think/ to a true peak value of -6 dB, and that's about where I set things too a lot. There's also export settings in NLEs like Premiere that can automate a normalization process of your final mix to a number of LUFS standards, tho it's just a normalization process and not a replacement for compression and limiters and actually mixing things properly like you discuss!

Thanks Duke! Also thank you for the info on standards. I obviously blew over that stuff to get straight to web audio. Great info.
@RayOrtega

DSLR Video Shooter great feedback, Duke. And that's the beauty of Loudness standards, -16LUFS has become the current standard for LN on the web or for mobile devices. Best thing in audio in recent years. I've dug deep into this on my podcast if you want to deep dive and figure out the nuances but as mentioned Premiere can handle the final targeting for you -16LUFS for stereo, -19LUFS mono) and check out Auphonic.com which can do it for you easily and quick as well as level and clean up. The key is that all your levels become consistent across all your videos, devices and viewer's ears because the actual measurement is made based on how humans actually hear and not peak levels which tell you nothing about Loudness. Some great explanation videos here on RU-vid as well. I enjoy the channel. Keep up the good work, Caleb.

That is for adjusting how loud your audio pick up is. Example loud environments use -10 and adjust levels in camera to -10 -12 or in a quite setting use +10 then adjust levels. When I am shooting events moto x at the start it super loud I would quickly set my mic on my camera to -10 then once the race is few laps in id set it to 0. +10 when i would be in the Mechanics area. hope this helps

One question I'd have for post audio production is setting limiters. Do you do have recommendations on how to keep the audio close to zero?
@RedditFriends
@RedditFriends 2 года назад
I'm sorry that this answer comes 4 years later but I guess you already know what I'm going to tell you, if you don't, now you know. The limiter is a good option but it ruins the dynamics of the audio, that is, it makes the audio sound sometimes very soft and other times loud and a little distorted, my recommendation is to use a compressor.

All good advice. You can also split a mono signal (a mic, for example) to the right and left sides of a stereo recorder and get a -10dB track on one side, and a -6dB or -20dB track on the other in the same device (like what you talked about, using the camera and a separate recorder). Then in post, you can drop out a distorted outburst, and use the clean side. If you also get good room tone, you should be able to handle 99% of the audio problems you'll encounter. Of course, this only works when you have more recording channels than sources. If you have 2 channels and 2 mics, better to go a little lower on your record level (as you suggested) for safety. Love the channel - alway s a thumbs up! :)

One of the things I love about my Tascam DR-40 is it's "safety track" function. The Tascam DR-40 has 2 built in mics and 2 XLR Combo inputs. and can record the internal mics to one file and the external mics to another file. Now if you don't use one of the sets of mics (internal or external ... doesn't matter), you can tell the Tascam to record the same audio from whatever mics you are using to the other file at a LOWER LEVEL! There are other recording setups but those are the 2 main ones ... 4 mincs or one or two mics to 2 files. So I set my main track to hit -12 ish and I tell the Tascam to record the second file to pull another 6db (or more) off the recording. If the person I am recording suddenly gets super loud or if someone starts talking on a loud speaker closely I can drop to the second file and hopefully have something usable. This is the main reason I chose the DR-40 over the Zoom H4n.

Great start to the series. Audio is SO important. Keep going! More audio ideas to explore in future: - How to set recording levels when your device doesn't give you a true dB meter. I record voiceovers with a Focusrite 2i2 (which simply has red/green lights) and QuickTime. How do I use the QT meter? Do you recommend different software for voiceovers? - If you record at -10/-12 dB, what methods do you use in FCP to boost it cleanly to -1 dB? - How to set your input audio levels on cameras that don't show dB? (i.e. G85) - How to use the volume settings on wireless mics that have volume on the transmitter AND receiver (such as the Movo WMIC70)? - How to find the best channel for your wireless mic? - Studio audio is very controlled. What options do you recommend for outdoor/location shooting? I make a lot of DIY videos and most are outdoors this time of year.

Great great great video. Essential stuff! Answered a few of my little questions about audio. It's always been one of my weaker points. It's hard to know how loud to output stuff when you're editing, cause I dunno how loud my speakers/headphones are compared to what the standard should be. So I usually just play it by ear (no pun intended) should everything including VO, SFX, music be under 0dB? I often raise my VO a few dB above 0 so I can hear it in the mix better, maybe that bad
@dslrvideoshooter
@dslrvideoshooter 7 лет назад
Hey Acrylic! Nothing should ever go over 0dB in your editor. For mixing in music, SFX etc, drop those down below your VO. So if VO in post production is between -8dB and -1dB, your music and foley should be at -15dB or thereabouts.

I love this video Caleb. I'm a medium/small RU-vidr with 60,000 subscribers and I'm trying take my audio game up a notch. I actually just got the Rode NTG4 and Zoom H4N Pro through your links. I have one question which I'd love to see covered because I can't find it anywhere on RU-vid. If the mic sits in silence for a while then I start talking my audio is extremely loud at first and will clip. Then as I continue to talk for a bit it settles into great sounding audio. I think the sensitivity is auto adjusting because of the silence. I've taken the camera out of auto mic levels but it does not help. Could you cover this next or maybe tell me what to adjust on the zoom h4n pro? Thanks so much and keep doing these videos.
@JustinHorne
@JustinHorne 7 лет назад
Hey man. Not Caleb, obviously, but I'm using the same mic. It's very likely what you've identified (auto levels), but I'm confused at your setup. You have a great mic and good recorder, but what is your chain? You mention that you have taken the camera out of auto mic settings. What audio are you using from the camera? You have what's known as dual system audio. The audio from the mic to the H4N should be wholly independent from the camera. Exactly as you've identified, the camera will keep turning the gain up and up and up in a silent room, searching for signal; once you start making noise, it'll relax to where it wants to be. That said, this should be completely separate from your setup, as your mic and H4N don't need to be connected to the camera at all. Are you using a cable to go from the H4N to the camera to record your audio? I'm guessing that might be it, based on your description. You have good gear, you should just be recording directly to the H4N and syncing the audio in post. I know some people like to pump from the recorder to the camera, but even then, I've found most dSLRs (if that's what you're using) to have pre-amps that are SO bad it still makes it sound like crap. In a silent room, properly set, your gear should be effectively silent. I'm using the NTG4 and H5, and I can't hear anything if I've recorded in a quiet room.

Great video. Personally for me it seems like I can never come close to hitting -12 without putting the gain to max. It doesnt seem to make a difference whether Im using my Shure SM7B with my Focusrite 2i2, or my Rode VideoMic running through my Zoom H5 and into my dSLR, or my Rode SmartLav+ into my iPhone 7+. In order to get my levels to hit -12 the gain always seems to have to be maxed out no matter what. I dont get it :(
@DirectorsGarage
@DirectorsGarage 6 лет назад
This video gets a couple of things wrong. You are lumping vu meters and db meters into the same category. They are different standards. The on-screen setting you showed early in the video was a vu meter, then later you showed db meters on the Tascam device and on-screen, implying the two are the same. They are not. A vu meter is an arbitrary scale. It stands for volume unit. Yes, red is bad, generally in audio (and most of life, except Ferraris. Gotta love a red Ferrari). But 0vu is different than 0db. VU is analog (0vu equals 1.228 volts for nerds). DB (decibels) is a digital scale, often referred to as a peak meter. How vu and db are related varies by device calibration. Most recording devices set -18db to -24db to equal 0vu. This gives a vu meter some headroom over a db meter. On a db meter, once you hit 0db, you are in pure distortion. The second you peak at 0db, even for an instant, you have introduced distortion into your recording or signal path. There is nowhere to go but distortion beyond 0db. You can hit 0vu and still not be in distortion. 0vu is calibrated to db, and that calibration is critical and adjustable on your NLE. Most NLEs set -20db to equal 0vu. But that isn't always the case. Understand what you are looking at and what you are setting, because you can make -14db = 0 vu in your NLE and if you're monitoring only on a vu meter, the output audio will be at a much higher level (with much less headroom) than on a -20db calibrated system.

I absolutely would like to see more in this series! As a stills shooter just moving into video for the first time - and already relying heavily on your advice as I equip my studio - these videos couldn't come at a better time. This was very useful, and off the top of my head some other areas which I'd be interested to see covered are: * Best practices for microphone placement, mounts, stands, XLR cable quality, etc. * Basic editing techniques - jump cuts, wipes, zooms, etc. and when they are most effectively used. * Best focal lengths to use for 2-3 person interviews and talking head videos. * How to shoot with 2 or more cameras and organize your media. * Best practices for blending audio from different sources, specifically lavs, small and large diaphragm mics. Looking forward to the next video! Thanks!

I had to do a mix in work for a tv advert we did and this "new standard" LUFs, what is that load of bollix! It couldn't be greater than 23 LUFs. We have nothing that measures LUFs. They also gave us levels at which we had to adhere to. Max peak was -7DB and Max peak 2 was -9DB. So I first of all made sure nothing went over -9DB. Then I made the mix a lot tighter, thereby reducing the average volume level. I made sure if there were any peaks in level, that they weren't dramatically above anything else. We had in the advert a few explosion type sound effects, so had to reduce them and leave the mix tighter. Sent it through to the company, they tested, passed. Still have no idea what LUFs is, I rang 3 friends of mine who own their recording studios and not one of them heard of LUFs or even see the need for it. Their consensus was the same as mine, what a load of new age bollix.

Many thanks. Very useful. Setting levels for say, speech is pretty clear cut, but I have more of a problem setting levels for lower levels - say when the subject is further away and I'm having to use a shotgun mic. Raising levels to -12db would introduce much more noise, but then in post, I could reduce it or record it low and leave it in post. Never sure where to set these kinds of levels. I have tried setting the level to read -12 on speech right in front of the mic and leaving it there, allowing things further away to fade so you get more of a sense of distance. It is difficult though to get the lower level sounds right without raising mic hiss. For instance, getting a level on a subject 20 feet away so that they're placed more in the environment is very difficult to capture well.

I really hope this video goes viral. I'm so sick of watching RU-vid videos with awful audio. It's a huge problem with RU-vidrs. They think built-in mics on their laptop, webcam, or dslr is good enough. And even if they think they are going pro by buying some cheap $20 external mic, they still don't have a clue how to monitor and set levels correctly. Or perhap, they are too lazy to sync video and audio in post. in any case, I hope this video helps others so they don't have to feel the wrath of flood.

I've edited a Yogscast video and the audio they gave me had a limiter at -5 but also a boost for voices that were not so loud. Long story short: they hovered at about -10 to -8. But they didn't go below -18 even when whispering. Dynamics in Premiere can help you do that and compress audio nicely. 1. Why hover between -10 and -12 db though? Like from what I get from online....the higher the volume of the recording the more data is captured, because that data is cutoff at a certain point on that scale and can't be transformed at all. What is this cutoff btw as well? -60db? So if it was -60db for example and I record at -50db then I'm only getting 10db of data, vs 50 db of data if I record at -10db? Is that an okay way of thinking about it? Then when I'm editing the levels I can lower them at will, knowing that the data will be okay...? I get confused cause of the loudness war and how louder is better for everything it seems but I can't get any interesting volume changes if I do that. So louder is always better quality, but loses the fidelity and utility of having differing levels of sound? Is that how to think of this? 2. And What if I'm having a VA do segments that jump to screaming all of a sudden, -12db doesn't give enough headway to avoid clipping in those cases. Should you be dynamically separating the different bits (screaming, talking, etc) wherever possible and keeping them all recordded at the -12-10 range? That seems like a huge hassle. Is there a sufficient level for all mediums....like -20db maybe...? Like I want good quality just I don't want people worrying about clipping when doing recordings for me. So is there a compromise zone? I'm just interested in getting voicovers and setting those to other music and sound effect clips and combining with animated video....so I have the luxury of splitting lines up into separate takes.

Nice video! Some suggestions for future tutorials. An explanation of why sound is mostly measured in negative decibels might help. For me, making an analogy to photography helps. In recording, the recorder can never know how to expose (set gain) for the sound one wants to recorder. Should it set the gain high (like high ISO) for distant voices, or low (low ISO) for a rock concert? Like a camera, most sound equipment can try to use an AGC (automatic gain), like auto-ISO, but we all know that it's best to choose the ISO you know is best for the recording. Like photography, you really always want to shot at ISO 100, that is no audio gain. So what does that mean? It means that you never record a sound that is louder than the device can record at all frequencies (colors), like sunlight to a camera. In audio, the recorder sets it's maximum ability to differentiate sound (like light in photography) at 1 volt of signal (or something like that). That is displayed as 0 decibels on your recorder. 0 isn't 0, it're really the place where the signal/power is at its highest before being overwhelmed. The reason audio recorders don't have their numbers set 0 to Infinity (or some really high number) is that is that such a scale would not mark your saturation point, the way ISO 100 does in photography. 0 decibels is essentially the maximum, BEST, sensitivity of your recorder. You can record sounds louder than it's sensitive to, but that leads to some frequencies not being recorded (leading to distortion). You can record below it, say -128 decibels, but now the recorder struggles with picking up the audio without noise, again, just like photography. So when you say you want to record at -12 decibels but publish closer to 0 decibels you're not giving the full reason, and that may help viewers make more sense of it. When recording, you can't predict the maximum loudness, so you must set your recording to a level that maximizes the recorder sensitivity, without going past what it can record properly. There's NO PERFECT recorder setting. It's a judgement call. Do you get every nuance of the person's voice at 0 db, hoping they never go over, or do you loose a little bit of detail at -24 db but know that if they laugh it won't be distorted? However, once you have your recording finished, you can move your data around to closet fit it up to the 0 decibel level. Most people use compression to improve that (another subject I'm sure you'll cover). Anyway, I think what you meant to say is in your experience -12 db is a good compromise for you and that viewers should test out various levels on their equipment to see for themselves the effects. Like in photography, record at too low a db and you loose shadow detail, record too close to 0 (or above) and you lost highlights. And, like in photography, you want to avoid high ISO (gain). You want the right microphone, and placement (like a lens) to get the best audio without gain. A whole other video, or two or three... ;) Hope this long-winded comment helps :)

Great video as always. Question for the community. Does anyone know what workflow we should use for our upcoming feature film (zero budget and amateurs recording audio). Have a zoom H4n going to a Blackmagic video assist 4k as well as a rode filmmakers kits and a rode ng2 mic. We've got the gear, but less of an idea as to how we best use it! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Glad I just watched this. I have been intuitively pushing my YT audio as suggested at the end for years. I was just about to take a major turn on my current project and drop to -6db, as that's the common answer that pops up on a Google Search, gonna keep it the way it's been. Thanks.

Any suggestions for church audio for band and singers? I'm the keyboardist but I set up our sound from our mixing board into our 4k camera then to Atem and OBS. I would like to get more volume onto our videos but I've always been afraid of it distorting so I set the camera at -18db because we have 5 to 8 singers with microphones and the band with my keyboard, bass player and drums mic'd. Even though everything sounds clean I would like a little more volume so I'm thinking I should try a rehearsal and set the 4k camera to -6dbs and set the facebook video to private during that time as a test. I've been trying to find a way to monitor the recording in real time but plugging headphones into the laptop doesn't give me any audio. I'll watch more videos to see if a simple setting change in OBS can give me an audio feed through the laptop for headphone monitoring.

Thank God someone on RU-vid I subscribed to talks about this. I have been seeing people ask others about production and mostly post production questions like these. I was going to make a video just about this and start my channel because I graduated from film school. But once again, what a coincidence you made something lol. Something you should do next is talk about following up recording with not only shotgun mics but the placement and what mainly they are used for. Surprisingly I use shure mics and rode mics for for sound effects. That I think you should talk about. I know you covered it but follow the video up with some intel of after this. Well best of luck and I will comment on the next video with whatever you make.

Hi Caleb. Thanks for your informative content. I record using a smartphone (filmic pro) and the Rode VIDEOMIC ME. I turn the gate slider below the time counter all the way up but the loudest I get is -26 dB. How can I get higher levels while recording?

Hey @DSLR Video Shooter I subscribed but would like to know if you cover the Zoom H4n Pro and how to use it. This is very helpful for setting the levels but if your can go into the feature set and what everything does that would be great. Say things like compresser, limiter, low pass filter, etc. And the MTR mode, and basically everything.

I cannot hear the sound in playback. I'm using one of your H1 set ups. I appear to be recording sound, at least the line levels show activity during recording. But nothin in playback. Also, Special Mic is grayed out in the menu. How about the simplist possible vid on recording sound, one that doesn't assume we know anything at all about the G7 or H1. I'm frustrated beyond believe after two days of trying to figure this out.

Fantastic work and a huge help to me as a relative "newbie" to AV recording. Regarding final production / export levels - Getting as close to zero as possible, one question I have is the best method for managing occasional peaks that take you up to zero, while the bulk of the recording stays well below that and ends up no where near zero. Do you try to splice up the audio and lower just those instances? Leave the remaining audio low? Any best practices you can offer appreciated. As an aside, your overall video quality is tremendous. Not just the video and audio, but your speech cadence, clear explanation of concepts, and so forth. Happily subscribed to your channel.

I recently just got the Tascam DR 05 and this is useful! I just need to test it more. Btw my audio is around -31 to -21 ( normal voice levels) for it to reach -10 I need the Tascam to be super close to the subject. Is there any way for the Tascam to be more sensitive to sound?

Interesting take on the subject. I am not questioning your experience but just to give you an example of my setup, I usually have my speakers on 70% volume and your video came across extremely loud. You also don't want to be that one video where people panic and have to look for the volume buttons so trying to hit 0 .. wow, I think is a bit risky :)

Some audio recorders do not use dBFS for meter format and instead use VU format, or have no specific dB meter labeling. Easier to understand (regardless of meter format) is to adjust peaks to around ~75% of meter range leaving ~25% (headroom) for unexpected increases in volume. It is also advisable to turn on a soft knee limiter to provide additional protection from unexpected loud sounds that can cause clipping.

Very good, but disappointed that I can not find the next in the series. A lot of folks promise, but often it can't be found. I think I have done everything to find it...Makes me want to skip the RU-vid system all-together, and because of this I think many of us simply do not subscribe because we can not find all that we are looking for on any given channel.

Very interesting thoughts on editing levels. I've always been taught to shoot for -8 so that's what I do but I've noticed some other RU-vidrs have very loud audio, certainly louder than mine. Personally I watch a lot of videos at night with other people asleep in the house so I wish that it will be too loud and often have my computer volume down almost as low as it will go. So I found this video while looking around to see what is recommended for RU-vidrs and why they're all making it so loud.
