I am so excited to announce my interview series. Do not fret- I will still be making repair videos! I simply feel strongly about archiving these important conversations as well. With all of us technicians, gear-heads, and musicians, it all comes down to one thing -- a deep love of music.
Join me as I travel to various repair shops, music shops, recording studios, and more -- to sit down and talk shop, history, & life with these fixtures in the music world.
Also, I’m on Gear Time Live, a music gear game show presented by @QueenOfShitMountain podcast, and sponsored by @Reverb, @EarthQuakerDevices, and @RuinousMedia. Check it out!!

Thanks for listening to us older folks. I just lost my 89 year old Mom on the 18th of July, and I made sure to listen to each and every one of her stories, because I never knew when it would be the last time hearing them.

This was a great interview segment, congratulations. I love how you allowed them to tell their stories, it was warm and personable. Coincidentally it’s the anniversary week of my dad’s passing and I felt a connection to the story of learning from your father all the way to coping with their gradual decline and loss. Now I have to go play something loud on my turntable that my dad hated but tolerated, in my case it was Rocket To Russia (my dad knew Andy Williams as a young man, btw). Thank you for flooding me with a wonderful vibe of memories. :-)

You have an inherent talent w interviews like this. Not only from your perspective in electronics but your interview style gets the interviewee to open up wonderfully. Could you look into other interview prospects, say former giants in the audio industry still alive? This stuff needs as much documenting as possible and your perfect for it!

Wow! That's interesting and I love seeing a shop with all that old audio gear. I could spend a whole day in there just poking around, getting in the way, and talking. I got started in Jr High in the electronics section too with seeing and reading all the cool books in that section. In high school electronics class we had a really great teacher that taught us how to repair tube type TV's and amps. Along with the class mandated theory and talking people into letting us fix their TV's, he would teach how to actually use the test equipment, guide us and even get SAMS photofact manuals if it was something we didn't already have one for. I never went into repair but it always gave me a good base to understand other electrical and programming theory. I will always be grateful for someone willing to teach and pass on such interesting knowledge.

I loved it when he talked about the 'religious' experience going to the records store once a week. Oh, yeah. I can relate to that. Kids today miss so much while being fed music by an algorithm in spotify etc. There was so much excitement back then.

Colleen i love your new series. It brings back memories of hanging around the local electronics store following my moms friend who repaired only tube radios and tv's. I love learning from the veteran techs. Its where my love for fixing or restoring power amps and guitar amps came from at an amateur level.

This was an amazing interview. I would love to see more of this type of video from you, simply because, how many of these old timers do we still have around? Fascinating stories, and they still are deep into it. I am barely becoming competent, but the fascination is the driver, not the dough, as your interviewee made several points of.

Great video!! We had Lord Valve aka Fat Willie on south Broadway in Denver who's store was just like that. I've both worked as a technician since '84 and then as an engineer since '97. I've been building tube amps for 25 years. I fixed amps for a music store independently 20 years ago when I was between jobs, so much junk that nobody wanted to pay for...

That was very nice! I was a teenager in the 60s and an audiophile, so this was quite a trip down memory lane. I well recall the Empire Troubadours and I remember being intrigued by the Marantz SLT-12 turntable way back then. I finally got to see one in the flesh very recently at Ring Audio Service, a shop around here that is so very similar to Howard's. Fifty years to scratch that off the bucket list! Entering these places truly feels like time travel.

Just a quick ask, could you provide contact info on the business you interview. I'm actually going to look up this fellow because I've inherited a great old stereo system but I know I should not just fire it up out of the blue after 25 years of not being turned on at all. It probably needs some recapping too since it's original 70s components. (Concept 5.5 etc)

I'm not trying to minimize this dude's work or knowledge but saying today's stuff is not fixable, it's a bit over the top! it might not be fixable with old technics and tools but damn sure people fix some kind of complex electronics these days which blows my mind, just do some research on VGA repairs or RU-vid and you know the time has changed, they repair broken trace 15 layers deep into PCB and so many other fantastic repairs which if you don't see, you wouldn't belive it even possible!
@NoOne-sn2si
@NoOne-sn2si 10 месяцев назад
It's not that the new stuff can't be repaired, in most cases it's just not worth repairing. Nobody wants to pay the labor/service cost. People don't work for free, cheap a$$ed, electronics buying mofos! Lol!
