After servicing the transport, and installing a new reel table drive tire and premium Athan pinch roller, all transport modes are functioning on my Audio Technica AT-RMX64!
I absolutely cannot recommend Maxell UR tapes for the AT-RMX64. As I’m sure you’re aware, Maxell UR tapes are Type I “normal bias” tapes. And you can look in the manual, which is readily available online if you don’t have a hard copy, and see the specified tape is Type II “high bias” tapes, which is the Cr02 cassettes. I recommend you use the tape type that Audio Technica specified. What will happen if you use normal bias Type I tapes is the tapes will be over-biased resulting in diminished high frequency response…you’ll lose a lot of high-end. The AT-RMX64 has some of the best frequency response characteristics of any cassette 4-track machine, but that’s only if it’s operated as recommended by the manufacturer. Additionally, Audio Technica didn’t specify, but I also recommend C60 or less tapes. You can generally get away with C90, but stay away from anything over 90 minute tapes, and 60 or less is best. The longer the tape brings the increased risk of thinner tape stock. The transport is setup for the tape thickness of C60 cassettes.
