@@EdwardSmithMusicHi, if I'm using these headphones mainly for streaming music from my phone (so 32 ohms), which headphone do you recommend? Some people in the comments said the ath mhx50 sounded better with the lesser impedance versions
@@Davo198 Both are really good. I personally don’t think one is better than the other… ultimately they are just different. I use both of these headphones on a daily basis and love both… if you can go to a music store and have a listen for yourself, I think you will then find the right fit for you.
@@EdwardSmithMusic could you tell me if the Beyerdynamics are too big for a smaller head? are they significantly bigger than the ATH m50x? i feel like all the reviews i've seen are from adult men so i'm afraid it'll be too big for women
Mate that build rating on the 770 should be 5/5 because you can replace everything on that pair of cans. From driver to the headband everything can be easily replaced. They were made that way for maximum reliability.
Being a M50x user, I give this one to the DT770 Pro. The headband will flake (after 5 years of use) and can't be replaced. Same goes for the hinges. I'm getting the DT770 Pro after both the headband and hinges gave up after more than 7 years with my M50x. I feel like I'm mostly going to miss the detachable cable and the folding design tho.
Quick question, I'm not familiar with headphones but I've often heard the headphone wire is usually the first part to go. How easy is it to replace the wire?
@@_Dingu with the 770/880/990 the cables are built like tanks. Ive had the 770 for a few years already but ive never had any issues with the cable. I also have a 710 (about 7 years old) and the cable is still as good as it was new. Now do take note that i have a lot more headphones and my 770 dont get that much use. Theres a reason why some people still use a 1980s version of the 770/880/990 with only replacing the headband and pads.
@@_Dingu I got my pair this week and I confirm, the cable is buff. About 1.5x bigger than your usual headphones. There's a video on youtube on how to replace the cable, it looks hard but def not impossible, I recommend you watch it. But I wouldn't stress over the cable breaking.
Great review! 👍🏻 Thanx a lot. Just a tiny little remark from a native German: "Beyer" in the brandname "Beyerdynamic" is pronounced like "fire", not like "layer". I hope it is clear what I mean 😊😇.
I have both. If you are getting headphones for on the go connected to your phone get the m50x, if you are at a desktop with a dac and amp get the dt770s. Sound quality is hard to judge because it comes down to personal preference but IMO the dt770s sound quite a bit better when properly powered compared to the m50x's in the same setup. That said they both sound great and when I'm on the go I prefer the m50x because they are just more ergonomic because they have different cords and are easier to tuck away when not in use due their rotating/folding ear cups.
Hey, you have the DT 770 Pro 250ohm version? Could you recommend a cheap AMP or DAC that support 250ohm and I can afford to buy? I'm starting to lose it.
I had to return the 770's. Way to harsh , even on material with a dull high end profile. Much better soundstage then the 50x, but the 50x hit more like studio monitors. The kind you have to know and work to get the mix right in which is what I needed. Such a great upgrade from the song 7506's I used for years. Nice vid.
@@didnotgiveafuck Even though the soundstage is a little cramped compared to my Senns 560S and senns drop 58X, they are the best speakers on your ears phones I have every had. Especially the lower end detail compared to the mids. Tellxs you what's foinf on. I can even put together a track on them and there's very few adjustments I have to make when going to the monitors. Probably has something to do with how fast the audio is hitting your ears or something. 2 pairs of the 50x, both blue editions. Great phones. And affordable.
The amazing part about DT770s if the ease of part replacement. Mine are over 12 years old and I've replaced just about every part at least once, a few twice. Things just wear out. It is super easy to order a replacement part and disassembly/installation is a snap. I find the headphones super comfortable and don't find a detachable cable to be an issue. Great industrial design with these headphones.
@@moodymud well not *easily replaceable, you will need a soldering setup after ordering a replacement from Beyerdynamic once the cable gives out or your dog chews threw it
It's about comfort and sound. I have both headphones, and I disagree strongly with your comfort rating. IMO the DT770 is much more comfortable for long sessions, & as for sound, you said yourself that the DT770's have a better spatial spread when monitoring. This is much more important. If you want to listen to music with enhanced low end etc.. get a standard pair of headphones. I agree about the interchangeable cables. If the DT770's had that then you wouldn't even need to compare the two as the DT770's are a no brainer..
@@sebastianhinestrosa5829 I suspect you have the 250 Ohm set. If so then the focusrite might not have enough power in the pre amps to support 250 Ohm's. I'm sure if you had the 80 or 32 Ohm set you would be ok. I have the 80 Ohm set and it works fine on my PreSonus 24c audio interface.
@@sebastianhinestrosa5829 Therein lies your problem. I bought the 80 Ohm's for that reason. They are the "middle of the road" option. Not as good clarity as the 250's but better than most others. Good luck with it all.
@@sebastianhinestrosa5829 just get a good headphone amp. The 250ohm are great just get a headphone amp and you will be sorted.... You still made agreat choice...
Most people I've seen rate the DT770 Pro far above the ATH-M50X in pretty much every way. But it does have the downside of a non removable cable. For a set of headphones which seem to be designed with repairability in mind it seems odd not to have an easily removable cable. The cable is always the thing that breaks for me and I vowed not to buy headphones without replaceable cables again but I've got more experience with soldering now, and I've just ordered a DT 770 Pro. I figure if it ever comes to that, I'll solder in a 3.5mm jack myself and they'll be perfect.
Cheap easy mods you can get better bass reproduction and also a better mechanism of mini xlr to trs or trs in and out Jack's depending on your preference and it makes the 770 way superior over the m50x which I hate they are not comfortable at all and I know you can change the ear pads but head band is the worst plus the retractable part is so annoying if you aren't using them as a portable device
I had the M50s (undetachable straight cable before they released the M50x) and they were uncomfortable after a couple hours of use. I tried many different earpads and still had discomfort. 5 years after heavy use, the right hinge broke and then the left hinge broke a year later. I “fixed” them with super glue. On the 7th year, the left hinge shattered into tiny bits. After giving up on my M50, I switched to the DT 770 80ohms and I like it a lot. I like the sound detail a little more in the M50. But the 770 has what the M50 is missing: comfort and soundstage. I can wear the 770 for hours without any issues. I never tried the M50x so I don't know if there is much improvement.
I'm currently looking to replace my 5 year old M50X (extensive daily use) and have been looking at the DT 770 32ohms for two reasons, both of which you listed, soundstage and durability. I love my M50X, but just this week I had the second hinge go on mine, the first went a year or so ago, and like you mine are now both superglued. Also the pleather coating started going at about 2.5 years, with both the original earpads and the headband going on to shed heavily until all the pleather was removed. Lastly, and least, the original straight cable I got that I've used this whole time is starting to show separation at one end, arguably they're still perfectly functional as I still had the spare cable to swap out. Also, I use mine primarily for PC gaming, and honestly the soundstage is pretty poor with the M50X, directionality is actually pretty solid for stereo headphones, but everything sounds pretty close to your head.
Both are great, definitely as far as from what i've heard from reviewers,dt770 has a better soundstage and immersive subbass and that is my preferred sound that i wanted. But istg, that unremovable cable is a deal breaker for me.
Hollow dettached narrow bass without body. Enjoy. Dt770 biggest bandwagons andost didsappinted headphones I bought due to crowd recommendations. Big mistake.
You can find a detachable cable mod on Etsy I think. I found it from Reddit after I thought about getting these a while back. Then you can use pretty much any cable you want.
@@braille5575 literally anything but dt770. I don't understand why ppl buy them. I have them in the box. My least favourite. They have no proper wide bass, they have shrill highs that hurt my eardrum. Have to put them on sale. Any headphones from 30$ superluxes, any 100-200$ sennheisers, or even those new AKGs over those hyped up beyerdynamic shits. I have 80ohm version btw, but it's literally ear hurting sound. So I am flabbergasted why these RU-vidrs recommend them...
What I didn’t like about the m50x is that over time, the material covering the headphones cushions began to strip & flake. And it wasn’t a use issue/ wear and tear issue. I actually had those headphones just laying around at home for years because I was so busy working over the road. When I finally got around to using it, the flaking had already begun. It’s still usable. It just sucks having to pick up the flakes that scatter around. I kinda want it to just completely strip itself. It’s unsightly but it wouldn’t be so messy anymore.
No... ATH M50x are NOT comfortable at all! I have had ATH M50x since 2015 and I've recently upgraded to DT 770 Pro 250ohm just because I couldn't stand the headclamp force and the ear lobe pain after 1 hour. ATH M50x are very heavy, clamp very hard, and the ears are not fully encompassed. They pinch the earlobes. They're especially uncomfortable for people who wear glasses (like me). After getting DT 770 Pros I realized how important comfort is. Having a detachable cable is a mere convenience feature, but many people fall for that and buy M50x instead of DT 770 which are a superior pair of headphones in terms of comfort, build quality, durability and even sound clarity and bass. DT 770 are just all round better.
my ears don't gel with the M50x sound, it sounds mediocre for the price to me, but elsewhere all over the web, they are ridiculously recommended and over hyped
Afterall it depends on the persion, I've been using M50x for 6 years now and had no issue when it comes to comfort. Yes they are not the greatest, but manageable. You can replace your pads with 3rd party one. It does make a difference.
@@pastilance1 Yes I did try replacement earpads from brainwavz hm5. But they changed the sound too much. It became tinny and thin. I went back to stock pads.
@@VamsiMohanKrishnaVadrevu nah, the way to go are third party equivalents of the ATH pads off of ebay or aliexpress There are no such pads under Brainwavz brand.
m50x has more fun sound good punchy bass with a v-shaped sound signature.. good for edm and pop songs, the soundstage is not wide, perhaps too confined. dt770 pro also has v-shaped sound but a more detailed, more flat, neutral sound. but doesn't mean that it can't produce good punchy lows, it can replicate m50x's bass with eq. it also has a wider soundstage. also dt770 pro have a sharper peak in the highs, typical beyerdynamics that can be unpleasant but I love bright headphones, it brings more detail in songs, sometimes I can hear instruments and sounds that I would not hear with the m50x. so dt770 wins it for me.
Dt770 appear detailed because it shovels that piercey treble in your eardrums, but any detail I hear in dt770 I hear in 30$ superluxes Evo without hurting my ears as dt770 do. Details are there to be detailed not thrown at you wiry fuol force while bass and vocals are subdued in 770...
@@martinkulik9466 Any suggestions for a better sounding open-stage set with good lows for no greater than 400 USD? I found M50's too muddled and closed, VModa M100's weren't bad but also too closed for me. My favorites have actually been MAudio Q40's with lowend EQ boosted, great clarity, open sound and much cleaner and even more bass than the M50's once amplified... They are the closest I've found to having the open-staged clarity of, for example, the AT AD1000x, but still having a powerful lowend. Looking for the next step up...
Kinda regret buying the M50x cuz they super bassy and the ear cups ain't big enough they always snag on my ear piercing bruh🤦🏾♂️but they sound good for listening or recording vocals but i wouldn't suggest for mixing IMO I'm about to invest in the DT's
Not mentioning that the DT770 Pro is available in 3 different ohm ratings makes this analysis incomplete. The 32 ohm version can be driven with a phone, whereas the 250 ohm version will need an amp. Potential buyers need to be aware of this.
I have tried the DT 770 Pro in both 80 and 250 Ohm. Recommended them a few times to happy recipients who prefer listening to music like Jazz or Classical Music. But because you feature the 250 ohm Model ... it is so important to exclamate to only get the 250 ohm Variant when coupled with a good Headphone Pre Amp. On all mobile devices and most motherboards (except a rare few) you will hear barely nothing with the 250 ohm Variant. But they do sound still so slightly better when coupled with a good headphone amp. The 32 ohm Variant is for you if you insist on these headphones but mostly have weak mobile device outputs or similar. The 80 Ohm Variant is the most versatile but will have low peak volume on weaker mobile outputs. Also tried a few Sennheisers, Sonys, Koss, Bose and Bower Wilkins Headphones just to mention a few that are either a popular choice or really good on their own. Notable mention... the Koss Porta Pros always amaze me as a compact on Ear Headphone. But back to those two legendary Headphones ... i just bought my third pair of M50s ... my second one beeing the BT2 Variant ...which truly sounds like it is indeed wired... if you use LDAC 960kbps. So for the BT2 Variant: Stay away if you intend to use them with an iPhone or Android without LDAC 960 support. They will sound as dull or even worse than a pair of Ear Pods Max. My original pair of M50s was now 14 years old and i have used it at least a few hours every day... at home, on the go ... just always. Why did i replace them for a new pair of M50 (in the M50x Gunmetal variant :))? Because they sound so much more fun... they work for films, also Jazz and Classical Music ... although the sound stage is not nearly as wide as on the DT 770 Pros or the DT990 for that matter and the clarity is also not as defined. But exactly this clarity is for my preferred types of music too much, too airy,... i love that DnB, Techno, Rap and Trap or any type of EDM sounds like you are in the club. Huge Speaker style bass, nothing distorted, nice but tight soundstage that can become quite a bit wider with the proper recording. This btw. also makes them quite useable for fast FPS Shooter Games... positional audio is still decent while explosions sound like real explosions. "Airier" Headphones like your typical Bose or Sony NC Premium headpones, the DT 770 or the good sounding but very fragile Premium Steelseries Headsets do not reproduce mids and especially low frequencies quite as punchy but still not overexposed like the M50 do. Back to my final Audio verdict as i drifted over to why i also like to use them for really everything else. I like my audio clean, neutral and undistorted but still dirty, so when the fat baseline hits, it really hits you. So i have the peace in mind that i do not care if i listen to Simon & Garfunkel, Lil John, A$AP Rocky, The Prodigy, John Spencer Blues Explosion, ELO, Justice, Die Antwoord, Dj Shadow, Slipknot, Trampsta, Massive Attack, Dj Fresh, Autechre, Chicago, Schoolboy Q and whatnot... it all just sounds so right. Not only clean but also fun. Mind you the DT 770s will manage to play quite a few of these Artists just fine too,... but take the song Bassline Junkie from Dizzee Rascal ... the bass will not "be buzzin" on the DT 770 Pros ... so that is definately a song that sounds just weird on the DT-770 Pro. John Spencer also sounds in general nicer on the M50s although the DT770 also do a good job but they do create a different experience for the listener. So if you want a "always on" wide soundstage with pristine separation (perfect to dissect every single instrument track) and brilliant treble ... go get the DT 770 Pro´s ... they do feel more comfortable and a bit more premium. But i just cannot quit the M50s ... they sound so much more fun to me and when i need some bangers instead of the 4th coffee... the DT 770 just do not cut it. Comfort was a problem in the end with my 14 year old ones ... but both new ones feel really nice. At the very first day i should have given the Headband a little strech as the fit will hurt after a few hours if you have a rather big head like me. Now a few days in this does not bother me. Quite curious ... the Earpads from the BT2DS Variant are quite noticeable softer and feel really nice throughout a 10 hours office day (Mic is really really good for Teams and i can dual pair my phone and notebook). Still the M50 Earpads will be comfortable enough, even for longer sessions as long as they are fresh, be sure to replace them as soon as you feel the inner cup putting pressure on your ears. There are also quite a few high quality after market earcups available for the M50s ... but that sounds like a research of its own which i have been too lazy to do yet.
I have both. They just sound different. The M50x has a stronger low end but the 770 (32ohm) has a more accurate one. The 770 has a wider sound stage. The 770’s make “s” sounds sound sharp. I listen to the 770’s more but that might just be because they’re more comfortable.
Great video.. I have to disagree about the comfort and the sound quality (but this depends on what you use the headphones for) The DT770 is waaaaay more comfortable and suitable for long use which is great for mixing...They do have a greater clamping force but the cushions are so comfortable you can hardly feel it..I wouldn't say the same for the ATH-M50X as I always feel like removing them after about an hour or 2 of use. As for sound quality, the ATH-M50X has exaggerated lows which are great for casual listening but in comparison to the DT770 for mixing, not great. Having used both of them for the last few years I'd definitely go with the DT770 for studio and wins hands down in terms of comfort and sound quality
@@laurenthenry For the 250 ohm you'll get decent loudness at about 75% of your mac volume (As in you wont wanna go higher than that coz it will be comfortably loud enough) I use the 2016 Macbook pro 13" and haven't needed an amp to push it
Good but that lack of bass in 770 worries me more than comfort or sound stage spatial surround. Other reviewer confirmed it that he too can't stand lack of bass... Same with me and earphones I had always bass most important...so enjoy your tin can comfortable surroundish 770 and I rather go for less comfortable less sound stage but more beat, bass and juice in m50x... I wish I can test them tho
Bro which one should I buy for making Melo dub tracks? Because I am too confused 😭. And also I need headphone which I can wear for long time because I produce for long time.

I've been meaning to have my dad buy the M50Xs for himself since a while, he's a bass player and wants to produce music on the laptop. It will be the best option in that price range for monitoring his type of music. That and the new cheap Behringer/M-Audio interfaces might be a good way to get started back into music.
If you look on Amazon there are tons of people buying replacement pads for the AT-M50X headphones. They only last a year or so. People are complaining that the replacements alter the sound pretty bad. So keep that in mind. I was thinking about trying them out but I said forget it. Earpads peeling and leaving black pieces of covering on your ear only 6 months of use...? Then trying to find decent replacements only to have them not sound right? Fuck that.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50x - 38 Ohms or Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO - 32 Ohms ? For listening to music on a smartphone, which ones do you think are better and which ones are more resistant to breakage in the long term? Will 38 Ohms for a smartphone sound better or worse than 32 Ohms in general?
what I always find lacking in these comparison videos is the sustainablity of beyerdynamics products. Although I haven't had this particular headphones, I've had two IEMs by them and they both were defected in less than a year, both by their cables. looking at the cable situation on DT 770 Pro is just giving me anxiety as well; Specially since the Audio-Technicha's have replacable detachable cable.
Three solid choices & an honest assessment. Refreshing compared to the salesmen rampant on forums & YT, who hype the latest & 'greatest' (expensive) models. After the hype dies down & they move on to newer models, you can often find bargains on older models. I prefer the comfort (my big ears prefer bigger cups) & sound (after EQing for more bass) of the DT 770 pro, but may eventually try the Sundaras after the hype (& price) decreases due to newer models being pushed.
Edward, you nailed this comparison as i was looking to replace my Audio-Technica with these DT770s. Do you recommend another pair to have better sound quality than the Audio-Technica? Thanks.
I have these two for more than 3 years, I think I can comment on it. dt770 can take lower bass, I'm a bass fan, while m50x will have distorted sound at that low level. m50x is easier to drive. m50x has 3 cables, so I used one for my drum setup. Other than that, dt770 has slightly bettern sound quality.
I have just ordered dt 770 pro 80 ohms version....but i'm really having a hard time with these. Sound is coming from somewhere back of my head. Dialogues seem to be coming from far away. Maybe I'm used to my sennheiser earphones which pump aound directly in my head. Will it get better with time? I'm really sad and stressed.
@@shubhamyadav8484 I have some guesses. 1) 80 ohms has lower volume depends on your audio device (some cannot drive it well. You might need an amplifier. Try borrow one or try in a audio shop. I recommend fosi audio Q4 or amps from Fiio) 2) dt 770 has a wide sound stage that shows sound from different directions. That's actually a good thing. To answer your question, these sound characters won't change much over time.
Exaclty thats it! Mod them this way by inserting any audio-jack and you'll be fine with them for the rest of your life - or as long as there are spare parts for the dt 770. Notice they build them since 1985! And hey you can mod them for example to version M (with higher noise isolation) or anything between with the leather earpads and the stiffer metal-bracket. You can get any sparpart from cables to drivers for something between 5 - 15 $ except for the driver itselfe - i think its about 40-50$/part. May you and your DT770 🖖😊✌ I'm going to put some drivers from old earphones into one of my peltor ear-protectors xD 🤪
The build quality of audio technica are really bad (I bought 5 of them) that I decided to never buy them again. They always break withing 6 months. The sound is great! The sound of the 770 was awful in the beginning but after a couple of months using them the quality of the sound became excellent, same like the build quality just awesome! ❤️
250 ohms is not to Connect it to a interface, 32 ohms is more for interface, Cuz with 80 ohms or 250 ohms i would recommened you using headphone amp and a good one. Same with dt880, those to you need to use 32 ohms for interface to Get the best out of it.
The Beyerdynamic earpads eventually squish a bit with use and you get more subbass and less upper midrange boost than when fresh out of the packaging box. This process doesn't take long. Meanwhile, the earpads of the M50x harden and crack instead. The DT770 earpads will yellow as folks don't bother washing them with laundry detergent, by the way. Lastly, the DT770 is better built.
@@scpjmartin electronics shouldn't get washed, pull the pads off and wash them - if ATH pads, wipe with Lysol wipes or such If you feel insecure about removing them safely, there are youtube vids that will show you how they are attached, it's fairly simple user-friendly

Totally disagree, you hear more what you doing in the mix with dt770 than audio technica, you hear more of everything, the audio technica is easy for the mix to become to little clearity mixing and mastering songs in them compared to dt770 pro where you can hear more and get a better mix. The bump in the low is terrible. You can’t hear the speakers through audio technica, so it sucks for monitoring. The comfort on audio technica isn’t good either. Dt 770 pro or dt 880 pro is the way to go for more accurate sound and accurate mix, what you want as an engineer is to have 100% accurate sound to it and good quality so you will get the same results as Kanye west or other big artist out there. You wanna get the best quality and everything and you wanna hear low, mid and high in details and you want the headphones to be accurate so it helps you with the mixing. The audio technica doesn’t provide that at all. It works for recording, not monitoring and not mixing and mastering of songs.

I think everything should run perfectly. Just keep everything off your laptop and saved on a External Hard drive, but otherwise you should be more than okay!
I took home both cans from the shop, tried them in the studio. The Kawai digital piano (ES 920) sounded way too bright with the M50X, even with the high end pulled back on the EQ. The 770's sounded really nice on the same piano. Then I used my analogue synths with Ableton, again, the M50X was very good, but lacked the warmth I found with the 770's. Finally, I tested some electronic dance music, some early Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and other electronic bands... MX50 seemed claustrophobic compared to the 770's, and also the M50X were quite bright. I think both are excellent headphones, but for comfort the 770's scored an easy 10 with M50X around 6 (lower if you wear glasses), and for a wider and more detailed sound, the 770's seemed to win that over the M50X. I know the hinge can fail on the M50X too, another concern. I watched a ton of RU-vid videos to get an idea on which worked best, thinking M50X, but ONLY when you try them in person can you really make a decision.
The problem I had with a different model Beyerdynamic was how loud it went before distorting, most only have a 300mW driver, I know sensitivity is a big part of the equation but the M50's have a 1,600 mW driver, if you like your music loud I'd go for a M50. I sold my M50's a few years ago only to order another pair. I know the sound quality isn't great compared to other headphones I have but the bass is very hard to beat at the price point of the M50's, great for gaming and some music types.
I am using my ATH-m50x for over 4 years now every day still my daily driver. PRO TIP : replace earpads with Brainwavz pads, the stock pads suck and hurt my ears. Combine these headphones with a nice DAC with treble and bass control like Fosi Q4. If you also want a microphone i advice look at MoD MiC.
bullshit biased review. dt770 are better almost in every aspect. More neutral sound is what you need. And much more comfortable for longer session as everyone agrees about.
