Audiophile CD players on a budget! (Old High End DVD Players)

While doing a basic repair on my new to me used Sony NS999ES DVD/CD player I thought I'd do a quick video on this and the last high end player I purchased for cheap. These once quite expensive elite players are pretty affordable these days on ebay and still make for good transports to a modern DAC or even as is. Most older high end DVD players were very good in the day but without Bluray support they are nearly worthless to most humans but still make very good CD players.
Players in this video:
Sony DVP-NS999ES
Sony DVP-S7700

Looking for a pretty darn good CD player? Start looking for older high end DVD players. These were highly respected players in their day but since they aren't capable of blue ray playback they're completely useless for video playback. BUT they still make for excellent CD/SACD players that can usually be had for under $100. Both Sony DVD players in the video were over $1000 new and I got then both for $75. There were many brands making these high end dvd players so there's usually plenty available on the used market.

The only thing I’d like to mention, you should avoid ordering old cd/dvd players online. This must not surprise you when you find lasers detached after a transportation because of an old glue. If it’s possible I’d recommend to search on local store/marketplace first.

Im in this right now. Getting Denon Pioneer HK and Marantz gear for 20 to 40 / 60e a pop. They may not last long in some cases but this cheap & quality, its a blast. We are in the paradise of Hifi second hand market right now and it may not be the case in a few years on. I got hundreds of records & films in almost every format. Im not giving them up for Netflix. They are working, I don't need internet to play them, the quality when played properly is stellar and I got memories with them. Thanks for this.

One of my favorite cd players is the Marantz DV9600. Top of the line DVD player of 2006, sold for 2100 bucks. Got it at Goodwill for $20. A little warm for my tastes, but great imaging and dynamics, Yesterday, I scored an Oppo BDP 103 and a Sony NS999ES, for $40 a piece at the same yard sale. Can't wait to listen. Cheers

Yeah it took you years to get them and build your path in music. When you have built this kind of collection and you know that gear can transcend the experience, you aint gonna give it up for Netfy. We are in the golden age of hifi aftermarket so we can find some gear that gonna help our collection to shine. You aint going to trash all this legacy, years and quality for the sake of the half ass streaming trendn which has its wonderful perks but hey, my Automatic for the people record dates from week 1 and the sound with stellar gear is intergalactic. Im not giving it up. So Im living the same thing now, getting 20 / 40 years old gear for dirt cheap which have a great / insane quality. And people in France are not aware of this, the younger generation is in a Netflix / no gear except my smartphone craze. The ones who are going to wake up in a few years, its gonna be tough. I give this age we are in 5 years. And then nothing will be available left. Or it will be crazy expensive again somehow.

About the copper... In lab-grade RF test equipment, steel compartments are often plated with silver, which has the highest conductivity of any metal. Because of the "skin effect," silver plating is just as good as making the enclosure out of solid silver. Somewhat lesser grade instruments employ copper plating for this purpose. It's almost as good as silver. My Heathkit "Lab" RF generator is like that. But in a CD or DVD player? The skin effect does not come into play at audio frequencies. But DIGITAL signals have fast rise-times, and therefore, contain harmonics in the RF spectrum. If radiated inside an audio device, they can produce "hash" noise. So, I think that's why there's copper plating in your DVD/CD player.

I bought a faulty Harman/Kardon DVD-player for 5 bucks. Just out of boredom, wanted to see if I can fix it. I was lucky, a faulty cap in the power supply. Only after I listened to it I looked up what that thing actually is because I was surprised by the sound of it. Apparently in 2012 some reviewers even gave it a 10/10 for sound quality, the msrp was 300 bucks. It´s true what they say about the plastic-front, ugh, but the sound is good. btw the content this channel provides is what I look for. Not "Here´s the newest 5.000$ unit" but rather how to give a good, old, but undervalued unit a new life :) subscribed.

The 999es is a real gem when it comes to to play SACDs as they should. Meaning that at no point there's DSD to PCM conversion prior to digital-to-analog conversion. This is particularly evident when it comes to speaker setup for multichannel SACD, where there's a dedicated chip, the 1-bit Digital Signal Processor LSI named CXD9722, that does time alignment in DSD in order to correct speaker positionings that don't conform to international multichannel speaker positioning that were applied during DSD recorded material. The same chip has separate settings for SACD and DVD. Get a "pure" DSD recording (ex. Telarc offerings) SACD, use this players analog out after set up and you'll be be hearing unadulterated DSD content in stereo\MChannel.
@jonpatrick66

Poraqui, thank you for sharing that knowledge. I appreciate it very much. I have one and don't use it much, but now I have a different respect for what it really has.
@Poraqui
@Poraqui 3 года назад
@@jonpatrick66 In the later years of the "CD replacement wars", so much "fake" SACD players that converted DSD to PCM, were the norm (even in the "high end" arena, or whatever that means). Doing so, defeated the purpose of buying SACD discs. This player, was part of the "3,5" generation of equipment that showcased the format and one of the first to have all the capabilities to convey untouched 1-bit data with MChannel content. Despite having a video section, this can be disabled turning it into a bonafide audio high res and cd player. I still wasn't able to get one, but I have the next best thing, the Dvp-ns900v. Still regarding the 999ES, it's a powerhouse and with the resurgence of physical audio content (Vinyl, CD, etc) it's good to own such "format faithful" player if you want to enjoy unadulterated DSD\SACD content. If you search for new SACD releases you'll see the upwards trend and will have no problem enjoying the format with the 999ES. You'd have to pay top dollar (2000-4000€) to have native DSD and SACD quality playback with the new modern players in order to have similar benefits as with the 999ES.

It’s great when it works but from many forum posts and my own experience with this model, it loses its ability to play SACDs over time, somehow it stops being able to focus on the SACD layer of hybrid discs and plays the normal CD layer instead and the SACD/CD button on the remote doesn’t work in this situation. Cleaning the lens can temporarily fix the problem but it usually quits again.

Get the service manual and follow the instructions. Maybe it helps.

On the contrary. The ES looks a lot higher end than the other. Look at the most important audio stage, the other does not even have a separate audio stage board as it looks like. The ES have everything separate, as only the high end devices. Separate analogue and digital power supply, separate digital processing board, and separate audio amplification board. That copper plating has no audible effect on the other.

The DVP-S7700 looks a lot like the slightly older DVP-S715. Same transport,power supply and audio pcb as far as i can see. The S715 just lacks the neat mototdriven frontflap and the copper coating. Anyway, the transport in S7700 and S715 is very high quality. And both also have digital out. So yes,buying a old top class combiplayer can be way more economical than drowning some serious cash into a actual transport or cd player.

The newer the Sony product, the poorer the quality. Compare the quality of ANY ES product from the late 80's up until 1991. From then on, Sony's Bean Counters became involved & prices went down, along with the once Japanese to Chinese build quality.

In the mid-90s, I bought a small Sony cassette recorder. I had plenty of experience with Sony products, and expected it to be good quality. It was SHIT, made in China. By the way, shortly after that, I bought a similar Panasonic mini-cassette recorder. It was made in Japan, and very nice.

I haven't come across to many locally. I've usually had good luck finding decent SACD players on ebay for under $100. Key is to search for a good DVD player that can also play SACD. Most of the seller's just think they are selling an old usless DVD player. I usually look for Sony ES, Marantz, Denon, Pioneer Elite, or Integra. These are good brands that tend to give respectable performance and are fairly cheap used. Although I tend to favor Sony ES players mostly just cause I prefer the user interface and remote. I play SACD once in a while, but I mostly use my NS999ES as a quality CD player. You a fan of the GC Spartans?

@@iowaudioreviews Thanks for the advice. I suspected as much about your view of the local market. I think it will just come down to eBay once I settle on a model I like, though I do already have a bias toward the looks of Sony's ES equipment in black. In any case it'll be an improvement over the hand-me-down CDP-C400 it'll replace. @johnmickey5897
@johnmickey5897 Год назад
Yes this is common I’ve learned after owning the same model for years and just trying a hybrid SACD now, mine will not play the SACD layer on hybrid discs, it just reads them as normal CD’s, the CD/SACD button on the remote does nothing to change this, I cleaned the lens on mine and it read the SACD layer ONCE, (the SACD light stays on when it’s reading the SACD layer) but it got to the last track on the disc and stopped in the middle of the track. When I opened the tray and inserted the disc again, it only read it as a normal CD again, so the issue was partially the laser being dirty but what I assume is when the laser is used heavily over the years it loses its strength and loses the ability to focus on the SACD layer on hybrid discs. I have not tried mine with non hybrid SACDs but from what I’ve heard it usually reads those without issue, it’s just the laser not being able to focus on the SACD layer of hybrid discs.

It was a bigger flop than SACD. I can't imagine to many people are worried about it. If you are thats cool. These days everything plays from a streamer, PC, or phone usually. I built a music PC to keep all my CDs on and I can also purchase and play HD 24bit what ever if I want by just buying and downloading albums from say HD Tracks. So no need for SACD, HDCD, or Blu-Ray Audio. Also most of this "high res" content is upsampled and remastered, it may sound better to you but often when scrutinized on a spectrogram its full of noise and other issues so I don't get to excited about most of it.
