Some of the best advice I ever got from my dad, who passed when I was only 23… If you want a great audio system get to work! When you find the woman of your dreams, you’ll know, because the system is part of the package, and is non negotiable. It worked for me.
Well Steve, I've seen a lot of great equipment that must sound terrible due to a combination of the following: Terrible Room, Terrible Speaker Placement, Giant Speakers Jammed into a Tiny Room, Lack of Room Treatments.
That's what I was thinking. Some of them weren't even far enough apart to actually be in true stereo. And many of the rooms would have likely sounded much better with a small pair of bookshelf speakers, or very small towers. I mean I get it. I want nice big speakers too, but what's the point if the system doesn't sound good?
It's ok since they all put some Unicorn belly skin below the speakers, which improves dramatically their ability to fill any size of room, & defy the laws of physic if necessary. I won't talk about the Audioquest Audiophile Black Holes they put in the very middle of the space, to swallow all the reverbs... We're not told everything...
An older guy talking about stereo systems with 70,000+ subscribers. Gotta love it. I'm an older guy too who spent all my money back in the 70's on super expensive gear. My biggest purchase at the time were Infinity Quantum 1 speakers. Those were and still are fabulous.
Thanks once again, Steve! Good to see what's out there. Maybe you could do a 'smallest systems' episode? I think my current rig would qualify for that. XD
This guy Steve has the coolest attitude towards Hi-End Audio, I believe its its very important to acknowledge the journey in Audiophile. I myself am a working class Man who's far from wealthy however, I've acquired some cool gear over the years and it continues to get better due to channels such as yours and Ron from NRD. Keep up the good work Steve
Nice to see my favorite brand of speakers in the viewers system Soundlabs . In my opinion the best sounding electrostatic speakers that do bass and dynamics quite well.
I came for the Klipsch Jubilee's! Glad they made an appearance though those look like DIY clones with K402's. Active bi amped Jubilee's sound amazing, though i heard them with different compression drivers than the stock ones. I'd like to hear a pair with the TAD4002 compression driver with beryllium diaphragms.
Great video, Mr. Guttenberg - some lovely systems here. Would have liked to mail you pics of my all-horn setup (including two 20 cubic feet tapped horn subs), but I've been in the process of moving from one place to another these last weeks, and unfortunately my setup wasn't ready to be photographed - up until today. Oh, well..
@@1999zrx1100 Yes Peter, I got a nice system not even close to what I've seen in the video. Yet I dare say my Clearaudio Concept MC with Lehmannaudio Decade, Synthesis Nemis into DIY Wilson Watt puppies can give them a run for their money, at maybe 1/10 of the price?
Nice to see that someone sent a photo of large Fulton speakers. I will need to send you a photo of my rebuilt Apogee Full Range speakers, the 300 pound original ribbon beasts.
We need to hear your system Miguel ! Amazing system & amazing room. Steve never records the system. Drives everyone (Most people) nuts....In the UK we're in lock down till the 2nd December ! :(
@@tomhirschel8524 Sorry but since my interview is with Steve, I will honor his position about playing systems over RU-vid (I do agree with him - you cannot get objective results doing this).
@@miguelbarrio Thank you for replying.I also watch "Pursuit perfect system" He has a good recording system. He covered the 2019 warsaw audio show.Sounds good to me.
Hi Michael Christ here, I believe I'm the only person in the world who builds the Western Electric TA-7396 baffle just like Western did. I have 4 mono units across the world and a stereo pair in Brazil. So far I haven't got to build a double stack times 3 units in the biggest Fox theaters for anyone. I guarantee it is the Kings system, being some 33 to 36 feet across the stage n 9 feet tall. I have taken the measurements of 2 separate originals over the years. It would have had a total of 12- 18 inch Jensen field coil woofers. I live with custom restored rca ubis, mi 9462, single stack left n right .I had 2 double stacks in San Francisco's bay house. My dot com may or may not still come up. Ciao
Very nice! Some wonderful systems there. I can't compete with those, lol. I share a little with the JBL system, the one with the L100t3s. As I have some L80ts on a 50 watt x 2 tube integrated, with the matching tube output/input stage CDP. I'd say that is my best sounding system. Though, it depends on what day you ask me, lol. I find audio sound to be frustratingly FICKLE! The same system RARELY sounds the same from one day to the next!
Nice to see some people have subwoofers along with their 2 channel setup. It makes sense. No point in calling yourself an audiophile then cut yourself off of an important part of the audio spectrum.
So many horn systems among the showed setups. Myself I’ve never heard a fully convincing horn loaded system. Partly yes. The best system I’ve ever heard were the big MBLs (radial system).
I have a question - at 13:50 there are some big theater speakers and I see that there are large woofers in horns. The opening at the small end of the horn is smaller and a different shape than the driver cone itself. What happens to the air/sound from the cone that is overlapping the size and shape of the hole in the horn? Is that driver in a closed box with only the horn hole open to the outside, or is that driver just in open air playing the sound out around the sides of the horn? I don't understand why the horn opening wouldn't be exactly the same size as the driver, or possibly even a little bigger? Is this what a "compression driver" is?
Magnificent systems! Hey Steve, I follow you from Spain. BTW, if O had all I own in display, I wouldn't have enough space in a 11 m2. Last week I bought a vintage preamp for 9.000€. The Sony TA-ER1. Now, I almost own the R1 complete equipment. A long time dream come true. I don't really mind if you think I did not make a good investment but I would like to know your opinion and if you know something about ultra gear from Sony. Thanks Steve.!
Wow! Thanks Steve. That was something different, i love these episodes :) About size, some of these systems looks like overkill compared to the size of the room they are in. I would not mind a "what is the right speakers for your room size" episode.
@@salvadorrodenas3071 I live in Europe and can relate to that, still is it smart to have a large system in medium room. Kind of like having a ferrari when the max speed limit is 80, or?
It also does depend on if the systems have room correction. I have a pair of Legacy Audio Aeris loudspeakers in full active configuration. They are 54 inches high, weight close to 200 pounds each, and are 1650 watts per channel. The designer mentioned that they can go into an 8 foot by 8 foot room and still sound good, due to the room correction. However, the idea of a 5 foot high set of speakers in such a small room just sounds bizarre.
I mean really. Klipsch Cornerhorns (pick your own spelling) in a small apartment? It's like an F1 car on a kart track. I hope it is the result of circumstance and not choice. Here's hoping the owner gets that house with a really big listening room soon. I mean no offense of course. It's all in good fun.
I have Klipschorns in a small treated bedroom on the long wall because they're the only good corners in the house. Sounds great to me with a perfect center image. You can make it work. Just lots of absorption everywhere. Jubilees are even bigger and would be preferred for a smaller room as a 2 way active.
Off topic The audio/hifi world really is small. Today at an hifi show convention in the Netherlands, I saw the guy from Pure Audio Project. Steve did a video interview with him a few videos ago. I didn't get to talk to him...he was busy with another visitor. The speakers from Pure Audio they sound very good. Not harsh but soft and detailed. Vocals were excellent. There was lots of great stuff at the show. I get to try lots of headphones. Even the Ribbon headphones or the Abyss.....and crown tiara headphones😂. And I listened to real hornspeakers for the first time. The imaging and depth is incredibly. Holographic indeed. Two curious things. Lots of stereo systems didn't use monoblocks. There weren't lots of balanced headphoneamps.
I sent in a couple of pictures of my system, and it has not been shown. I understand that you have hundreds if not thousands of entries. But, it would be nice to do a lot more of these videos using the pictures you received. I enjoy seeing these many systems, so i am guessing many others do as well. This actually gives you a large amount of content material and relatively simple videos to make.
I love it when people are that devoted, when they really stretch it to the max. But man, if I set something like this up, I am asking for trouble with my wife:-)
Lots of horn lovers out there! Steve - Call Roy Delgado and ask him to hook you up with some Klipsch Jubilees. Audiophiles order them custom (usually from Roy) - typically with cherry or walnut veneers and in the 2-way configuration with the legendary K-402 horn. This has been popular enough that Roy has come up with custom settings for a Xilica DSP crossover. While they are available with a passive network, the Xilica DSP seems to be preferred. assets.klipsch.com/product-specsheets/KPT-JUBILEE535-B-Data-Sheet-v05.pdf

Peter Southern Boy thanks for the link.. If I only had the room or even a home to place them in. I’m just renting a small place, so single 12” bass bin direct radiators are all that would work. And maybe if I had the room and funds, I could instead use 200Hz Iwata horns on top. I know, sacrilege for some..
Interesting to see what is out there I have Harbeth HL5 these to me are big speakers in my small room but nothing compared to those butties . I often wander if the larger you go dose this give a bigger wall of sound ?.
Ok, so I know there are certain caveats about the poor man's audiophiles systems that even I myself cannot stand. But there is some stuff that locally comes to the market that pleasantly surprises us. For me my main system for a while consisted of a Yamaha Avantage A550 and a set of (now discontinued) Insignia NS-SP213 5.25" 2 way bookshelf speakers. Admittedly I was curious as because the fan fair for the previous set BestBuy offered 15 years ago got raving reviews. So having said this, have you ever compared sub $100.00 speakers and thought, wow!? I know these dont hold a candle to Elacs, but they sold for 60 bucks. I'm curious to here your thoughts on them. Also, when I was 16 my first set of speakers were a set of Jensen CS315's I bought at Sears for a hundred dollars. My dream speakers would definitely have a 15" woofer. Not a horn guy. Is there anything in the 250-350 range that would be a good buy? Thanks, from a poor mans audiophile!
Hi, love your videos! Quick question, I have a Bose sound bar. Television sounds amazing on it, however when listening to music, a CD or my phone, it does not sound the same. Are sound bars really only meant to watch tv or should it also sound amazing to listen to music. Was listening to 50th anniversary, Abbey Road Deluxe, it sounds so much better through ear phones than sound bar. Would really love your thoughton this. Thx Vito from Canada. BTW just subscribed!
Hey Vito, you're never going to get goosebumps from soundbars, no mater how much you pay. Soundbars are not made for music, period. There are plenty of great budget systems out there you can start with. If you want to enjoy your music again, just do it! You'll be amazed at what you've been missing.
Thanks for showing! And keep doing what you do. Just one question I know someone who has the voice of the theater but never got to hear them have you ever got the chance to hear a pair and if so how did they sound? Thanks again 😊👍
They're not designed for consumer use, unless you can be 20 or more feet away from the speakers. They were designed for use in movie theaters. Or to put it another way, not great for music at home.
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac thanks I will say never got to see how big the room was they were in but another friend that works with him as well said they worked can't remember what I was told he used to power them ect... But thanks for the info and what you do
@@rammisframmis8588 Exactly, much misunderstanding about Altecs, though in part due to their own rather rudimentary approach to making crossovers. For smaller spaces, my preference is for a pair of 604s.
Just use an active balanced line splitter , Im using an IMG stage line fully balanced two channel input and 4 x 2 output. Left and Right Output from my Mixer goes to the IMG´s Channel A and B and output 1 and 5 goes to my Main Amplifier Driving My mainspeakers with 2 x 15 inch and Horn each side, Output 3 and 7 to My second Amplifier Driving My Studio monitors with 1 x 8 inch and 1,2 inch soft dome tweeter each side. , Output 2 and 6 goes to My 18 Inch Subwoofer with build in amplifier a ´little´4500 watt beast. All with Individual Gain settings and Great sound quality. Output 4 and 8 is going to another Mixer. Those Line splitters is a great solution and by keeping it all balanced you get a total improvement in sound. You can run them in Non-Balanced if your equipment is not balanced you just have to either buy or make adaptor cables from normal to balanced plugs and wire them in non-balanced mode.
Dear sir my ex-wifes friend blew me away with a pair of klipschorns in front and two paragons on the sides with a baby grand piano center wall....all in a recording plush room
