Comparison: docs.google.co...
After more than 7 weeks with the Audioquest Nighthawk, I have finally been able to record a conclusion. It took 6 tries and a lot of thinking. Which resulted in this video. Ultimately, the headphones are exceptionally comfortable, with a warm and inviting sound signature, and a unique design. They are worth every penny of the $150 I paid, and easily worth up to $500, in my opinion. I also conducted a comparison amongst several other headphones.

Interesting review of these fine cans, They are very comfortable, very image and sound staging for headphones, Cables can be easily demonstrated to have a small to even sometimes huge difference and yes they can be stupidly expensive, and subject to the laws of diminishing returns on investment.. the first time I got to experience the positive difference speaker cables make was back in 1989 when hawthorne Stereo in Bellevue WA sent me home with 3 different very unimpressive looking (actually FUGLY looking ) speaker cables from Tara labs and said the then ridiculous " they are directional the arrows go towards the speakers" and the he said "after you find the the ones you like listen to it for a while and for grins and giggles flip the directions of the cable so the arrows point to the amp and see what it sound like". yep me, girlfriend, 3 audio buddies all pick the same most expensive cables blind and yes we switch them end for end and yep they then sounded like shit. Next was audioquest brought 4 JVC deluxe boomboxes with detachable speakers with stock and 3 levels of their speakers cables to Puget Sound Audio Society yes even on a them $300-$400 compact stereo they make a very noticeable improvements. there is more physics than electrons moving from here to there, try getting and old decent FM receiver and connect various speaker cables to the FM antenna and use the tuning meter to see the RF levels for starters. T The angled plug actually make a small amount of compromise sense : if the plug stick straight out in horizonal socket it goes downward putting a strain on cable plug connection and the jack. if it is 90 degrees it may not be able to point down or to the sides. Burn in? yes in stereo, electronics , speakers yes, yes yes acoustic instrument even more, but on these or headphones in general I think so but I have not had much personal experience with new ones. Green sharpie on the edge of CD's yes, it's cheap try it, it's well worth it. Snake Oil? "No animals were harmed in the manufacturing of these fine $3000 Speaker Spikey Things" and these fine $60 headphone stands! happy listening, ear candles anyone?

Another excellent review! I hate all the snake oil around cables but Audioquest showed with their headphones that when they want to they can make some impressive equipment. These are very different in every way, I suspect that a lot of the criticism stems from this as they do have a particular sound signature. I admit that I found it odd at first but if you acclimatise to it then it is indeed a very relaxing, smooth and you might say luxurious experience. The odd physical design does work in terms of being wonderfully comfortable. I love these and probably rate them alongside my Denon D7200s as my favourite headphones. Well accessorise too with a nice case, dual pads and cables. The heavy cable is an Audioquest trick to con people into believing cables make a difference as it has a significantly lower resistance than the lightweight one. Very sneaky. Weirdly I also love my Etymotic ER4 SR IEMs which are polar opposites of the Nighthawk signature in being very neutral and accurate.

I've just got the Meze 99 and I primarily listen to metal music, and they give me the colourful in your face bass and raw feel of a live performance. I had been using some XM3 sonys for a year or so and for this style of music the bass signature matched what I wanted, however wanted some wired with a bit more clarity and less muddy around the bass hence the meze 99 purchase. With them being closed back too they sound great and the bass signature great to what Sony offered but with more clarity in highs and mids, sound great. I've ordered these too as I can still send the meze back, would you say these are as colourful as the meze for bass and are they a bit more detailed than the meze? I like their overexaggerated signatures, hate neutrals personally. I tried dt1990 pro and 660s and quickly realised they aren't suited for my genre of music. At first I put it down to open back and there wasn't the tight sound of the closed back my xm3 had and music felt too wide for my taste. Would you say these being semi open offer the tight sound and bass of the meze but with maybe a little better soundstage to it? Or would you say meze for my sound may still be the better option?
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 4 года назад
Yeah, I think the Nighthawk are noticeably wider than the 99. There's more to it than semi-open vs closed, though that is a factor. Earpad material, depth, clamping force, driver tuning, and audio all have something to do with the overall soundstage presentation. I think the Nighthawk's bass reproduction is similar to the 99's, though the 99 has little to no mid-bass and sub-bass separation. The Nighthawk is slightly better in this regard, but is still not accurate, which you might tend to like. As for the 1990 and 660s...people talk a lot about these headphones, but they aren't all that amazing. They're good for what they do, but are significantly limited. Despite being open back, the 660s has about average soundstage at best. The 1990's treble might be off-putting to anyone who is treble sensitive. I think the Nighthawk is a variation to the 99's sound signature--not a step up or down. It's just a little different. Personally, I think the Nighthawk has a bit more detail and clarity than the 99, though pales in comparison to the 1990 and many, many other headphones in that particular assessment.

@@NoThemeReviews Brilliant thanks for the reply. I only came across these in forums being compared to the meze signature and the fact they used to be £700 once upon a time adds a great satisfaction to a tight Yorkshire Englishman, although I've quickly learned more money doesn't give you the result you want. I totally get 1990pro for some users. Even though its not my genre I listened to "this is America" by Childish Gambino and the voice separation and soundstage was amazing. But the piercing noise alot mentioned was definitely there for me, and the 660s yes 100% agree the soundstage was nowhere near the 1990s. Think your descriptions definitely match what I hear so its worth the plunge keeping both and sending back one. Bass on the meze does get lost so the little bit of extra detail may push the nighthawks ahead. If they are better they are £29 cheaper too so nothing to lose. I'm starting to think maybe I'm not an audiophile as the top end reviews have always painted neutral sounding headphones as the ones to get, where you can hear absolutely everything in equal part. I just seem to like something that replicates the sound of if I'm watching a live performance at the front near the speakers. Looking forward to seeing which takes a shine the most, but if its the Meze then I won't be disappointed as they way above anything else I've tried so far.
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 4 года назад
Ha! You're as much an audiophile as anyone else, maybe more than some "audiophiles." Those who advocate for neutral sound signature get far too much air time. It's total nonsense. I think it's funny how those same people would tout $1100 Andromeda's for its neutrality, but won't mention $40 IEMs like the T2 provide more clarity, soundstage, detail, and instrument/vocal separation. Top end reviewers need to make their sound preferences everyone else's, and what better way than to convince everyone else the only way to listen is (GASP coincidentally?) the way those particular top end reviewers listen? I hope you like the Nighthawk. They're a collector's item now. Even if you don't like the sound, keep the box and accessories. You'll be able to make your money back at the very least.

@@NoThemeReviews I think there is only you and Josh Valour that actually speaks about them for what they are and who they are for. Its nice to have a reviewer who can say these particular headphones are for people who like this genre of music who want it to sound like this. Yes there have been massive hype jobs on neutral sounding headphones as most seem to think that is what an audio signature should be(if you like that style of music) and that's what I feel is wrong. To me none of the headphones I've mentioned are bad, but i certainly picked up who I think they would suit. To me neutral was like going to a studio to watch a performance and watching it in the next room, then the meze felt to me i opened the door and went into the room they were playing in and listened to it right in front of me. It almost feels now like I could say for my genre, you can have 3 types of sound. 1. Full colour, in your face bass and raw sound, may lose a little clarity(front row of a concert) 2. Middle of the stadium, bit more separation, bass is there but slightly reduced with you not being right next to it, bit more sound stage. 3. Casual listening, sat on the hill with a few cans, nothing in your face and smoothed out. Biggest soundstage. Probably not the best example but now I've listened to a few its how I put them into categories. I'm definitely 1 at this moment. As I get older I may get to 2 and 3 or some classical I probably would opt for the latter. Either way there's nothing wrong with any, its just listen to them and make the decision which suits your preference. It is definitely a difficult job doing this on RU-vid and I think your way of putting it will help guide people more to make a decision pointing at its strengths rather than its weaknesses against the reviewers preferred choice.

I found the review to be informative, and have subscribed. However I do think your rant on the suspension system was a bit excessive. As far as the acoustic benefits go, it is remotely possible that there is a benefit to decoupling the driver from the ridged metal connector, which does have a resonance when you flick it. But it is very likely that the comfort you couldn’t stop raving about is due in large part to this suspension system. It allows the angle of the cups to easily move in all planes, and, along with the top strap, they just float on your head. And you are overlooking the aesthetic/industrial design appeal of this suspension. Headphones (other than stax) are about more than just function. The look of the suspension really adds to the uniqueness of this headphone, differentiating it from the ubiquitous gimbal found on nearly every other headphone.

Darn You! You jinxed my Nighthawks and me. Haven't tried listening to my Nighthawks for over a year, but came across your video and pulled them out. I too got a pair for approximately $150. I still like them a lot. However, I just noticed one of the rubber suspension teeth has broken and part of it disappeared. Might you have any idea/advice on how to gerry rig a repair? I have reached out to Audioquest, but not expecting much help. I'm thinking if I could come up with a material that would work, I may be able to super glue it to repair. But, I'm not coming up with a proper material. Rubber band is too flexible. Anyway, thoughts? Thanks either way Neil Thegratefuldad

@@themarksmanABP Hey man! I've probably put around ~100-150 hours in them by now and I can honestly say they are by far my favorite headphone I own. The burn in is no joke though, they open up a lot the more time you put into them. If you can find them for $250 or under and prefer a warm sound signature I would say these are must buy. They feel almost like speakers if they were placed into headphones. The bass isn't too over powering, but it definitely has more warmth than most headsets but the treble is still detailed and sounds good without being sibilant or shouty. The mids are also on the warm side, but I still think they sound good. The imaging on these is also the best of any can I own. Pretty good gaming cans. Sound stage is good but nothing spectacular.

I still very much enjoy the Nighthawk. While I'm not a fan with their emphasis of sibilance, especially for female vocals, it's not nearly as ear-aching as the 560s. I'm not sure I've found another headphone that sounds exactly like the Nighthawk. I should probably do a new review of these along with the Nightowl...but my Nightowl's earcups are dented, and I'm waiting to snatch a replacement pair when I can.

@@СтаниславСоколов-т2р I think the HD660s sounds great for jazz and classical; it's not "airy" and has a bit of warmth in the sound signature. You may want to consider the Denon D7200 or KLH Ultimate One; the 7200 has about average soundstage and fairly precise treble (airiness). The Ultimate One has slightly better soundstage and less bass impact. Of the two, the 7200 is more resolving, providing more detail. Finally, I think either the Monolith 1070 or 1570 would do an excellent job as well. My overall preference from this list would be the 1570--I think it has the best combination of all factors, especially for the price.

However, for the love of Jobe (or whomever) enough with the shaking head cam,....I feel as if motion sickness is a certain eventuality after about 2 to 3 minutes! Also, the rather large, black, phallic, microphone on screen lower left IS a bit MUCH,...don't you think? Yes we're all impressed with your professional grade vocal conveyance but really friend! Enough! C'mon now,...we have enough narcissistic, attention needy, bedwetters on the news EVERY day. I watch your channel to be essentially be informed and informally entertained NOT physically challenged! Sorry but it IS annoying as hell from such an erudite, obviously well educated fellow, such as yourself! BTW....too much time on looks, ...we're all here for the SOUND man! That's what this predilection is all about ne c'est pas, mon frere?? Who gives a fiddlers fart if you're not in love with the way they look?? I think my HiFiMan edition X V2's are stupid and gawky looking as hell but when I hear ANYTHING on them I am transcended by the sound not how they look or are even made (which could be a lot better, BTW) but they sound EXQUISITE! Also, the 150 hours burn in DID make a difference with the hawks! I distinctly remember them sounding "meh"...before the extended burn in! Regards.....
