In this episode of Plugin vs Hardware i’ll be comparing the V-Comp+ by Audioscape, to the Arturia Tube-Sta plugin. Both are emulating the Retro or Gates “STA level” vari-mu compressor.

Being an arturia fan synth/keyboard related, I was looking for effects comparison videos! Thank you! On cheap earplugs, I feel more synthetic sound in highs from Artruia, and the rest is pretty decent in comparison. In my current state, I'll go for Arturia 😊

Dam it. I don't have any experience with the hardware so i couldn't even tell you which is which. I just preferred B and i suspected it's the hardware because it's a little thicker and darker. Thank you as always Thomas, really appreciate these videos.

B is warmer and is the hardware. But with a bit of saturation from let's say Acustica Audio, you can get them to sound alike. A better comparison would have been between the hardware and Tim Petherick's Nebula version. And, no 2 hardware units sound alike, so it is hard to compare emulations with a different unit than they were emulated from. Still, Arturia does not sound bad at all. In the mix, it will sound good enough!

That´s interesting and what someone favors depends on the experience (and sometimes source material). One could easily be fooled be the more pronounced attack and brightness compared to the hardware but if you think about going the route to a finished and polished sound that works in a mix without ear fatigue, the analog device controls the signal way better. Especially on the vocals you would need further work to control the transients and esses while on the hardware you could just brighten it up with an eq afterwards and it sits in the pocket.

I am mid video, for vocals I want A. IM HOPING A IS THE PLUGIN! I will say though that B has so much control! B foe everything except vocals

You might have been able to get it closer using the side chain feature. At least I know that's the case for their 33609

Hmm ok, and what would you feed into the sidechain input?

@@thomasvopstal It's not that kind of side chain - It's filtering. You can pull up the HPF and maybe select and pull down to ignore some low mids - I think that's what Paul Third did with the Arturia 33609 to get it to sound like the hardware unit. You can find that video and have a look. Again, I haven't actually tried this with them myself yet, so I might be off in how i'm explaining it, but it's worth letting you know.

First time I guessed wrong in hardware software comparison. Arturia is super or audioscape made it not very well. I suprised.

I disagree completely.. both units sounded completely different and Audioscape was clearly superior - although I really like Arturia plugins in general.

The Arturia sounds a little brighter. I can't tell much difference, a little more bass on the HW.

Huge difference, hardware sounds much more natural and organic, plugin almost detoriorates the input.

I’ve always found these discount hardware variants don’t provide much of an improvement over their quality plug-in counterparts. Retro sta-level will get gooey no plug-in is doing that and obviously not the v-comp either

I like how hardware fanatics focus on miniscule and irrelevant differences that are probably placebo related, and somehow the plugin's own characteristics, (if they exist at all), are always judged as inferior.

It was quite obvious which was the hardware, and I’m on the subway using AirPods 😅 Major giveaway was the harmonics and saturation. I wouldn’t mind having one analog for my Lead Vocal, but then just use 20 instances of Arturia on everything else hahaha Plug-ins are just so damn good now!

@@seanms35 The fact that you used hardware on vocals would matter to you and yourself alone. No one would ever notice, not even sound engineers, and there would be no consequences in terms of how your music is appreciated.

You do realize that if you didn’t have such great gear to try and copy many software companies wouldn’t even exist?…much less their emulations. End listeners/general public has never cared what mic, pre, comp, console etc were used. Pro level engineers have ALWAYS valued the subtle differences in gear. That’s why they are willing to spend so much money on it. All of the subtle differences combined do matter. That’s why you still have audiophiles, commercial studios, Mogai wire, Lexicon, Tube Tech, Manley, Chandler etc etc. Another example is high end wiring for studios. When I switched out all of the cabling in my commercial recording studio over to Magami the end end result was massive. 5000 feet of top tier cable with 5000+ connections replacing the older random stuff made a massive difference in our final product we output. The end listener and fans will never know or care that we did that. But pro level engineers will care. People that whine about analog gear are usually jealous because they can’t afford the good stuff, and are pissed nobody is listening to their home brewed amateur music at all.

I have the hardware and the plugin just chokes out and doesn't sound good when actually compressing. The gates does 40db and just sounds so damn natural. Analog modeling plugins are just a joke

Not certain sound comparisons can have placebos:), and only a true blind test can be used to really compare. Plug ins are good, but sometime take your mix to a studio and run everything through good outboard: pretty certain you will hear a difference in weight, depth and soundstage.

Those voices sound as if they haven't been recorded in an acoustically treated space, that's what I mean... if you don't hear that, you should clean your ears. @@cheekbone4554

IMO the B vocal clip sounded fatter (better). The clips were closer on bass but i preferred B. I own the hardware so i'm happy, might get another one. Thank you for this!
