"This is an electronic music album created for the Commodore 64 but if you don't have one you can listen to it on vinyl" might be the most hipster pitch I've ever heard in my life

Mat, WOW! I’m absolutely speechless. What an amazing honour to have you feature my game. Thank you so much for the incredible review and support... And I insist you keep the Game Boy! My heart broke a little when you showed your broken one!! And a massive thank you to everyone who is supporting this. It means the world to me and I couldn’t be more grateful. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Stay safe, healthy, happy... and retro!! ☺️

Does the cart work on the Super Game Boy or the Game Boy Player? Those are way more common than GB Light, and an excellent way to convey GB audio over good speakers, so their omission confused me. Also, great use of LightScribe. :)

I haven't listened to that album in ages, but I listened to it so much as a kid that 30 years later, and provided I was listening to the album at the time, I could probably still sing every song on that album. The picture disc: counting the images there's 38 sectors with images on the record, resulting in 20.9 images/second at 33 rpm and 28.5 at 45 rpm. There's no camera shooting mode which uses 20.9 frames per second, so indeed it will never work as advertised. But, when you play at 45 rpm and record video at 30 fps then you'll see the animations, but moving counterclockwise at 2,25 rpm. Though it is shown in a video at the band's website, the question remains: was this the intended effect, or was it a bit of a fumble - we shall never know unless someone asks the band.
@Techmoan
@Techmoan 3 года назад
Thank you for doing this.

Would it stabilize if your turn-table has a +10% to -10% speed slider?
@krellion
@krellion 3 года назад
@@omahahnful You'd need 54 images on the record (33-1/3 rpm / 60 sec/min = 0.555~ rps, 30 fps / 0.555~ rps = 54 frames/revolution) to get to 30 fps. 25 fps would need 45 images. (Edit: Corrected math)
@groenendiek
@groenendiek 3 года назад
@@omahahnful At 33 1/3 rpm (NOT 33 to be exact), in one second there’s 33,33/60=0,56 rotation. So if you want to view 30 images in that one second, they’ll have to be in that 0,56 rotation. We’ll have to divide 30 by this number, finding 54 which is the number of images you need, to produce a still image on a LP at 33 1/3 rpm. The frame rate of the average smartphone video recording is 30, though the cheapest ones often use variable frame rate recording. And I can’t tell what frame rate you see on screen without recording, so I can’t say for sure that using a phone camera as a strobe effect to view these records will work without actually recording the video. Also, with needing 54 sectors to able to view a still image through a camera, the sectors containing the visuals are becoming quite narrow (360/54=6.7 degrees) - which may well be the reason that they've chosen a compromise allowing for a larger canvas.

Re: SID Chip @ 3:00 onwards. Interestingly I have just released an adapter to allow an 8580 to work in circuits/computers designed for the 6581 (I've been making interfaces to use the SID sound chip on Z80 based systems since 2003). It takes care of the different voltages, filters etc, so this would allow the SX-64 to use a 8580 and play the music as sonically intended. I won't spam this post with links, however the latest video on my own channel shows it in action and has further information and points you to my website.

TISM (awesome Australian band) is re-releasing all their music on CD and vinyl soon. But most importantly they have the "Deluxe Omni-Album" so you don't need to buy all their albums on vinyl you can just buy an "all-purpose album cover containing liner notes, artworks and song listings that are suitable for all six TISM album releases." It has 100 minutes of analogue silence across 2 clear vinyl discs so you can listen to the digital versions of their albums in peace. Yes, I bought it.

Without a doubt the present situation for such a people who live under a lot of outside pressure just from bad weather. His counting of his blessings is a reality check to himself at the expense of of those not having to live under a wet climate that can make you crazy. Nice! As a studio engineer, the DAT would be the only format I really can relate to, but I never even saw any commercial releases. For us DAT was a “pro” format for delivering stereo mixes for mastering or soundtrack, between say ‘91 and ‘00. I say “pro”, because our well tuned 1/4“ analog Studer A-80 sounded way better than our £6k Sony PCM-7030 (1992). The Sony was a real beast, a fantastic machine to use. A simple clean took two minutes, while keeping the Studer in top shape took hours each week. No wonder I took the easy way out back then. Today no one requests those “CD- quality” (same effective data format) master originals. Sheer luck if we can dig out the analog tape copy instead. Well, that’s an early digital audio history lesson. In 2020 it seems few care about the integrity of their music’s source data files, session copies are sooo boring... 😅👍

So, back in the day there was a brick and mortar store near where I lived that specialized in CD and DAT. Lynn's Disc & DAT, as I recall. It was too expensive for a teenager, but I did go in a few times, they probably sold every DAT release that ever existed. Long defunct of course.

The Dimeo game reminded me of "Repton" for the BBC Micro - but I guess there was many similar games in those days!

In your 64 you could possibly fit an Armsid. Its a modern replacement for the original sid chips but the beauty of it is you can select which chip to emulate no matter which machine you have it in. So it would get you the 8581, all be it through emulation. Does sound very good though and about as close to an original chip as you'll get.

My favourite piece of DAT cultural trivia is that in the Red Dwarf novelisations, Lister’s music collection is on DAT tape. They must have seemed SO futuristic back in the late 80s or early 90s!

Those are really cool to look at but the thing that attracted me to streaming music (and playing my ripped CDs before that) is that you don't have to have any physical media to play the music you're in the mood to listen to at the moment. For people like me with ADHD, you can skip tacks and albums as much as you want without messing with a bunch of albums, singles, etc.

Ladies and Gentlemen,...the amazing wisdom and research of the gentleman known as "Techmoan". For all of the years of owning a Dat machine; I never knew that there was music that was released on DAT, or any of the other neat facts in this video. As always, thank you Sir.

Regarding the gambeboy screen lines, it's not solder reflowing that's required, as it's the connection on the edge of the LCD glass itself to the ribbon that has come adrift, usually rolling a pencil rubber over it pressing it back down can revive it, my DMG-01 had similarly awful lines and with the rubber treatment got it back to normal... :)

Sometimes just putting a bit tape in there to press it down is enough. Holding a soldering iron near it to warm up / re-melt the glue is the more permanent fix.
@twocvbloke
@twocvbloke 3 года назад
True, the only trouble with using a soldering iron is if someone used a fixed-temperature one, and ended up ruining the ribbon or damaging the LCD, got to have the adjustable temperature irons for it to work safely to keep the old gameboys going... :)

@@twocvbloke you can also just hold it further from the screen ;)

Well, some can, I can't, hands are too wobbly & twitchy, amazing I can actually solder SMD components, eventually, if I'm honest... :P
