She was still able to paint a smile on her face despite what she was going through at that time. I'm thinking by this time, she already knew about her cancer because during her travel in Somalia she already experienced abdominal pain and went to get herself checked after the trip. She was already distressed by what she saw in Somalia and her diagnosis of cancer here. You could see the pain in her eyes because she wanted to do and contribute more for the children and she knew that her condition would now limit her capabilities of doing so much and that hurt her to the core. She always wanted to be useful for others. She didn't want to just sit down and do nothing. Her Dutch upbringing contributed to her personality. That's why she was so humble, hardworking, disciplined and well-mannered. She was taught by her mother not to draw attention to herself. Hence, her disagreement with the interviewer that called her perfect. She was never a narcissistic. She never thought highly of herself. In fact, she considered herself just like everybody else. Even her sons could attest to that.

***** born in belgium to an austrian-british father and a dutch mother, lived most of her life in the netherlands and switzerland, rose to fame in the USA, was fluent in six languages, dedicated her life to help children in need, etc, etc. pretty much what one would call a cosmopolitan. I'd say she is a world heritage. deal?
@radiocommander
@radiocommander 10 лет назад
Born in Belgium means that she/he had lived under a constant struggle in languages between Dutch (Fleming) and French (Walloon). It does not surprise us Audrey speaks not only English in her movies, but also French in this interview (with heavy accents) and Dutch. But it will surely surprise us if she could speak Swahili, on the contrary though. And beyond those discussions, Audrey is the one most favourite actress in my mind, not because of her language capability but of her graceful life attitude.

Her testimony and her action for the children of Somalia and elsewhere proves her greatness of soul. This interview for French television shows her sincerity and her true commitment. She does not do it for her advertising. Let's not forget that she knew the war and the famine in Holland that marked her forever. Her fight, always inspires us. Rest in peace. Audrey, we love you so much.

Wonderful! She is my mother-in-law's favorite actress, and I read a big chunk of a biography on her while visiting my in-laws - what a rough beginning she had in life. I have always admired her on screen, her grace (dancer) and luminescence (star quality). I admire her more as I get to know the real person a little bit. I so respect her for leaving films to be with her children, and how tender she was with the little ones in Africa. Beautiful person, inside and out!

Alas, she was not able to overcome the trip to Somalia. I think the misery, deprivation and outright horror she witnessed finally took its toll on her health. You can see it in her face. She is a living witness and answers the interviewers questions accordingly. This is more a debriefing situation than an interview. UNICEF could not have had a more marvelous ambassador. I mean she spoke something like five languages, not to mention being a survivor of the Nazi occupation of Holland when she was a child.

Michel Davesnes je vais parfois sur la tombe de cette femme magnifique avec quelques fleurs et je lui dis merci pour tout le bonheur qu'elle m'a donné dans ses films! Le reste...................................!

Can anyone fluent/native in French tell me if she had that same sing-song quality to her speech patterns as she does in English? I speak some German but zero French. I've always had trouble placing her accent in English. Refined, elegant, and song like but no distinguishable country to me. (It doesn't sound like people from Netherlands nor Britain)

Rah Capek Interesting question. As a French/English speaker, I'd definitely say the 'sing-songy' quality in her English (which I agree is characterized by an accent that defies any precise category) is absent from her spoken French. She makes grammar/syntax / vocab. mistakes here and there & has a light non-native accent (someone further down said "heavy" - I totally disagree). Her mastery is really amazing.

+Mere Dumais, does her french sound a bit like the one they speak in Belgium? she had learned it in Brussels as a child.

+Jenny Smith, I would say that in English her accent sounds more English/British than anything else. I lived in the Netherlands, and she doesn't sound Dutch at all when she speaks English, at least not to my ear. the way she spoke was unique and beautiful, that's for sure :)
