Original Copyright BBC 2003. I make no claims of ownership or rights of the material. Salvaged for informational and archival purposes.
AUGMENTATION NOTICE: In order to preserve the integrity of the length and original audio, certain specific segments are covered up that were blocked due to audio/visual copyrights. It did not feel right to have these segments simply be "clipped" either, as wonderful voiceover dialogue would have been lost. I may be wrong in how I resolved this problem, but now 90% of the content can be seen.

I remember this being broadcast over Christmas 2003. Back then UK Gold made more of a fuss about the show, as they had a full Dr. Who weekend to mark the anniversary. How things have changed!

Even when the first 2 series of Nu Who were out it was UK Gold that would bother airing them more often to catch people up than BBC 3 did

It is interesting that this "celebration of" documentary was actually made & aired two years before the "New" Dr Who series hit our screens.

Doctor Who has always been a most enjoyably go-with-the-flow adventure series. Especially during Tom Baker’s era. Despite all its occasional difficulties and controversies, its magic should never be underestimated. 👍🏻

The idea that Bill Hartnell's version was grumpy and irascible seems to ignore the 121 episodes after his first thirteen.... his character altered to be a twinkly grandfather type by about episode 13 of the original run, when he realised the value of his new human companions.

I remember being introduced to doctor who in 1999 at 3 years old and when this launched in 2003 I was so excited because it was the closest I came to new content on TV. Crazy to think when you see how the show is now.

In 1963 we'd been watching The Chem Lab Mystery. This ended on Saturday and we were bereft. "What can we look forward to now?" We asked ourselves. Well, we needn't have worried since the first episode of Dr Who replaced it the following Saturday.

What a Who-oot (despite RU-vid's blocking of images due to "copyright")! Absolutely hilarious, and loving all the insights from the various Drs and companions, and assorted other characters! Peter Davison "doing his best acting", overshadowed by Nicola Bryant's cleavage! The points at which the actor's real personalities became part of the Dr's persona (Troughton's twinkling charm after the real-life grumpiness of Hartnell, Pertwee doing his own stunts, Tom Baker deliberately not reading scripts so he could be perpetually surprised by what was happening, if always in control, Sophie Aldred being terrified by the sea devils as a child, and Nicola Bryant by the cybermen, Peter Davison harking back to the Tomb of the Cybermen, Anthony Hopkins later stealing his Hannibal Lecter laugh from the show, Colin Baker hating his costume, which I for one loved, despite his horrible persona, which almost killed the series... It wasn't all down to the producers, although John Nathan-Turner had already begun that rot, by making Tom Baker take off his scarf (imagine taking away Matt Smith's bowtie before it was his turn to regenerate!), Peter Davison's actual cricketing highlight... Leela as companion: possibly the best Dr/companion chemistry of all time. Interesting what Colin Baker was saying about all the Drs having to stick with more or less the same costume: the Dr has always been not only a gentleman/woman of fashion, but also environmentally friendly as well, not buying into new fashion fads, before the old threads are completely worn out... Sylvester McCoy being a real-life superhero. Love it all; thanks for the memories, BBC!

I loved Doctor who as a kid, it was everything to me ( and star Wars ) . I lived in Tasmania Australia and grew up in the late 70s and 80s and we got constant repeats of John Pertwee, Tom Baker era Who so they were my favourites, and I liked Peter Davison BUT I tried to go back and watch a few episodes recently and honestly I couldn't get through it, it was terrible..... I think I will just let those old memories be just that , old.

When it was on Netflix (US). I skipped most seasons and just watched random episodes cause of how absurd it was. But now that I've actually watched the show. I've noticed how the Hero treats the villains. He actually tries to be diplomatic. Most heroes would rather fight the villain. But the Doctor actually tries to reason with them.

It's such an odd experience looking back on how the show was seen prior to the revival. On the one hand you had documentaries like Resistance is Useless, which basically took the piss, and on the other you had retrospectives like this, where it was treated with a fond, nostalgic glow. Whatever your thoughts on the direction the modern series has taken (and God knows it splits fans every bit as much as the original series did) there's something very pleasant about revisiting this period of uncertainty in the show's history and knowing there would be whole new generations who'd subsequently fall in love with the programme. Great watching this again. Thanks for uploading!

Unable to answer as to why BBC has made some episode clips copyright protected and not others. Therefore, this was the workaround devised in order to preserve the documetary's original audio and total length so that it could be seen on this platform.

@Digital_Cheese
@Digital_Cheese 3 года назад
I would have loved to upload the unaltered original, however RU-vid via BBC has a copyright block on those particular episodes of Doctor Who. In order not to compromise the audio commentary on those blocked portions, I augmented the video to allow the audio to be heard as originally aired. Not ideal, but at least now it can be heard in its entirety, and seen in most of its entirety.

The assholes who keep pushing the copyrights law on and on forever should pay for free internet other ways I'm wondering why do I keep paying for the internet anymore! Internet providers should start asking that question too. Mobile phones or "smartphones" can't be used to watch youtube and honestly I don't want a bloody "smartphone" nothing in my life is that important that it can't wait until I get home to answer my home phone and I kind of like my privacy. If you wonder what brought this on is the bit at 14.28 "blocked by copyright" you can't show a clip from a 60 years old show without being hounded by Googles or Facebook attack dogs. Would be nice if I could afford to pay for all the rubbish made decades ago but I and most of us can't afford to pay for it.
@Whiteythereaper
@Whiteythereaper 10 месяцев назад
The whole point of copyright is that those that created the content get paid for it's use. The complaints against it in the case of RU-vid is that small uses of copyrighted content are okay in specific context that fall under the Fair Use protection statute, for things where you need the material to add context to things like reviews and documentaries. To use clips from the show, the channel has to pay the licensing fees to the BBC. The irony is that this entire video is copryrighted content. BBC are within their rights to claim the entire video and have it removed because they own it. They legally have to actively remove breaches of copyright to fulfil contract obligations for royalities. You can get pissed off all you want but it doesn't change that this whole video is an illegal upload of copyrighted content without consent from the BBC, and the edits that block certain scenes are there to prevent RU-vid's automatic moderation system from flagging the video as copyrighted content.

I don't mind classic Doctor Who but I have to say bringing it back to tv in the new millennium is a big mistake, especially for a Saturday night schedule on BBC One. It ruined the fantastic high quality Saturday night schedule of just gameshows such as Jim Davidson's Generation Game, Whatever You Want, Big Break Friends Like These, Dog Eat Dog, The National Lottery Stars, JetSet and Winning Lines, Casualty and Parkinson, only to be replaced by this and another crap show Strictly Come Dancing. It's all thanks to Lorraine Heggessey who ruined saturday nights on BBC One and she will never be forgiven for. Doctor Who should've moved to BBC Two and if I was to become controller of BBC One in the future, my first priority would be to axe this, and Strictly Come Dancing and Michael Mcintyre's big show and replace it with gameshows similar to 2001 and bring back The National Lottery. I would also axe The Graham Norton Show and bring children's programmes back to BBC One where they belong.
