I wish more people talked about this! Self publishing as a career path is a decision that needs to be made VERY carefully. It takes a lot of time, attention to detail, and patience. Since starting my own company, I've already invested over $3,000 into my first book and probably another $10,000 in non-tangible investments (my time and labor); and even then, I consider this to be on the lighter end of what I could have invested. But, as someone who wants to turn this hobby into a full-time career, I understood that the upfront investment was worth the freedom of telling stories the way I wanted to tell them and reaching a specific target market. It's a lot more work than most people think it is.
