Both can be effective, nowadays seems that the longer stride has more stamina and the other more speed, in general. Italian champion Varenne had front legs coming quite up. Then if you look Walner, top horse, also got legs pretty high compared to Captain Corey for ex.
He screwed up the stretch run too. He impeded the progress of Tetrick twice in the stretch by not maintaining a straight course. Watch the stretch run when they turn for home. Maybe that's what his job was supposed to be though. Trainer was Ake
