Auguste Rodin - Filmed Sculpting in his Studio (1915)

This is unique film of the father of modern sculpture, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), working in his studio in Paris in 1915.
What is particularly interesting in the various pieces of footage is seeing -- close up - the artist's process with marble.
There are four segments of film:
[1] The artist walking up and down the steps of a monumental columned building, and inspecting the structure
[2] Rodin posing top-hatted in a garden
[3] The sculptor coming out of the then derelict C18 Hôtel Biron, which the artist used as his studio
[4] Rodin sculpting in his studio
Enjoy!

Anyone who sculpts The Thinker so beautifully is indeed both a Master Sculpture and a Master Stone Mason to. There weren’t any safety issues with marble chips that might get caught in ones eyes, but I thought it delightful seeing the amount of marble chips in Auguste Rodin’s beard.

+NobleDesignMedia hi! what's so wonderful about this footage for me is you can actually get a sense of the artist's process or method of work! as this the film of Renoir and Monet painting.
@shelleynobleart
@shelleynobleart 8 лет назад
+John Hall Yes, absolutely! Extraordinary. And don't you imagine he must have worn eye protective goggles ordinarily?? The chipping of marble in the clip looked uncomfortable for his eyes. I picture the filmmaker asking him to possibly remove his usual eyewear for this demonstration? I also wonder at what he might have said to someone near the camera near the end. It looked as though he made some sort of amusing comment about the tip of the chisel?
@JohnRaymondHall
@JohnRaymondHall 8 лет назад
+NobleDesignMedia i wonder if the lack of protective goggles was just for the filming - to see the sculptor's face more clearly for this historic record? i imagine he may have worn them usually. when you say "It looked as though he made some sort of amusing comment about the tip of the chisel?" i have often wondered if lip readers could tell what is being said in these silent films. the Renoir footage has lots of 'speech' it would be good to know.
@shelleynobleart
@shelleynobleart 8 лет назад
+John Hall Yes, I think you are quite correct. And yes, perhaps a person with lip reading ability could make out what was being said. Lovely music in this. I shared the link with my ballet master who plays this piece during his classes and for whom Rodin is an absolute favorite artist. He loved seeing it as well.

First of all, I _KNEW_ it was Ashkenazy playing Chopin!! He found such a sweetness of tone for this and other pieces of Chopin that he recorded, so fluid, with remarkably subtle articulation....he’s one of my very favorite pianists. And what’s to be said about Rodin?? Every view of his head and face begs to be sculpted, he so resembles a Roman emperor with that gorgeous French nose! But the intensity in his eyes while sculpting, when he glances towards the camera, was amazing to see....truly the fire of creativity and genius! I’ve watched the video several times, just wonderful!

hello - good to hear from you. i first saw the footage of these artists in a documentary titled 'Sacha Guitry CEUX DE CHEZ NOUS Edition de 1952 FILM ENTIER' - i think if you googled this and/or parts of it you may well find out who owned the copyright originally. a lawyer friend whose specialty is intellectual property tells me that copyright expires 50 after the death of the last major participants is cannot be passed on - so this material may be out of copyright by now.
