This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Augustine's work, The City of God, and specifically on his discussion in book 11 bearing on the understanding of the Genesis passage "in the beginning, God created the heavens and earth", to which he provides a metaphysical interpretation.
He addresses a common question about creation: why did God create the world at that point in time, and not before? The answer is that there do not exist infinite periods of time before the creation of the world, any more than there are infinite spaces within which the world could have been situated. Creation is the beginning of time and space, and time does not exist without some motion or change.
