Aime, sesule / lylia.
Maš išvaduosme / lylia.
Meiliais žodeliais / lylia.
Baltom runkelam / lylia.
Full lyrics in English:
What about you little bee?
Why you grey one became sad?
- How am I not to be saddened
I can hear the queen-bee
Was caught faraway
And has been put into a beehive..
- We shall fly, little bee!
We shall free him
With white honeycombs
And sweet honey.
What about you little sister?
Why you young one became sad?
- How am I not to be saddened
I can hear my dear brother
Has fallen into a great misfortune
Lets go little sister!
We shall free him
With tender words
With white hands...
Iš režisieriaus V. Dabašinsko muzikinio filmo apie lietuvių liaudies apeigines dainas atliekamas senųjų kaimo dainininkų iš Dzūkijos ir Rytų Aukštaitijos.

In this song, what does "lylia" mean? Is it a name? Thanks!!
@Balticfolk
@Balticfolk 3 года назад
It's an onomatopoeic refrain with no direct meaning, sort of like "la la la..."

@@Balticfolk Thank you! My name is "Lilia", so I was perhaps hoping that they were crooning my name as a magical incantation!

@@pealia in a way it is: this genre of ritual songs with onomatopoeic refrains is related to ancient pagan calendar rituals. In the countryside whence these songs come from people still see a distinction between these ritual songs which are called "giesmės" (meaning "psalms") and newer folk songs called dainos (literally meaning "songs"). Giesmės are the remnants of the ancient pagan rituals and worship and just because we don't know the meaning of the refrains nowadays, it doesn't mean that there never was one.

Man tai labai stiprios giesmės.

Įraše girdimas šis sutartinės fragmentas: Ka tu, bitele / lylia. Syra nuliūdai / lylia. - Kap man neliūdėc / lylia. Girdžiu bicinų / lylia. Moterys dainuoja viena per kitą, todėl sunku atskirti pavienius balsus, bet tokios jau tos sutartinės :)

Man lithuanian songs are depressing af

This one is actually quite cheerful, according to Lithuanian folk standards :) Seriously though, I think our contemporary taste is to blame for this perception: eat a pack of sugar candies and you won't find a pineapple sweet if you try it immediatly afterwards. Our tastes for emotions have become numb from sugary pop culture nowadays.

Baltic folk I like folk music, but only Latvian and Estonian. Lithuanian isn't up my alley :)
@Balticfolk

If cheerfull folk is what you prefer, I can assure you that Lithuanians have plenty of that too. It's just that those songs aren't really up _my_ alley, so you won't find any on this channel. When it comes to folk, I like it archaic and sad, and deep - be it Latvian, Lithuanian or Estonian. @@Balticfolk Thank you for your comment. I think that was on point! Ppl are so overloaded with fake "emotions" throughout mainstream music/pop culture and tend to mistake traditional folklore for "sad" ... simply bc it's not over the top, not overdramatic.
