Colm in a suit gives his catchphrase "Stay handsome" a whole new meaning 😅 That is a wonderful version of this song. As it is a traditional I've always asked myself if there wasn't a Scottish or Irish version. Thank you and merry christmas!

The version know today is really close to the original Scots version. The poem was written by the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns in the Scots language. Reading the original version is very close to what most English speakers sing today. The Irish version of this was very beautiful.
@maragevaudan477
@maragevaudan477 9 месяцев назад
As the other person mentioned, it was written in Scots by Rabbie Burns. There wasn't a Gaidhlig version as the language was only really kept alive in the Highlands at the time Burns wrote his version of the song (then the clearances happened and capitalism destroyed the Highland culture and nearly made Gaidhlig extinct). I've always wanted to hear this in either Scottish or Irish, and I'm so glad that Colm did this. Tapadh leat à Alba, Colm! Gàidhlig gu bràth!

The best things you do Colm is when you find a song that has more poetry in it than the normal performances bring out. Like Angela Lansbury you're an intelligent singer who reveals the meanings of what you sing. So find songs that have never had their poetry revealed before and blow our collective minds.

@Conzdunchad

Only issue is it should be in Scottish Gaelic as it was written by Robert Burns and is a Scottish song. More Scot’s heritage being labelled Irish. But even then it should be in Scots itself.
@reginabillotti
@reginabillotti 9 месяцев назад
Where does he say it's originally an Irish song? Is it also bad for him to sing an Irish translation of "Stille Nacht" or other songs written in other languages?
@Conzdunchad
@Conzdunchad 7 месяцев назад
@keith.ie2023 so does all Irish songs need to be made in old Norse as that is where most Irish comes from ?
@Conzdunchad
@Conzdunchad 7 месяцев назад
@keith.ie2023 Robert burns created the song using Scot’s Gaelic and Scots itself, whilst again it has been compared to Irish Gaelic (chalk and cheese as languages). However you saying the historical transition of Irish Gaelic into Scot’s Gaelic (which is inaccurate due to the language’s developments occurring at the same time) allows for the appropriation of culture then it is as much the danish and Norwegians right to claim all of Irelands culture due to their full involvement in the repopulation of Ireland during their empire.
@ShaneOConnor-wu2bj
@ShaneOConnor-wu2bj 6 месяцев назад
Can't you just appreciate the song. Nobody is trying to take away the origin of the song. I'm sure Robert Burns would have been greatly flattered that someone loved his song so much that they translated it into their homelands language.

[Sèist] Bu tràth is anmoch sinn san allt Ag iomair 's sinn nar clann, Ach dhealaich cuantan farsainn sinn Bho'n tìm o chian a bh' ann. [Sèist] Mo charaid earbsach gabh mo làmh, 'S sìn fhèin do làmh a-nall, 'S gun gabh sinn, cuach gu crìdheil làn Air sgàth an tìm a bh'ann. [Sèist] Gu cinnteach 's leat do bharail fhèin, 'S mo bharail fhèin tha leam-s', 'S gun gabh sinn cupan caoimhneil làn Air sgàth an tìm a bh' ann. [Sèist]

You have a true, one of a kind talent brother. I LOVE hearing songs I know in other languages, and this is PURE poetry. God bless and keep you, sir.
