This is part 1 of the story of Jenny Brooks Johnston, aka "Aunt Jenny". Aunt Jenny was a legend in the Bankhead Forest during the late 1800s and early 1900s. A well respected midwife, and herbalist, she lived with her husband and 9 children peaceably until the Civil War broke out, leading to an event that would forever change her life, the lives of her family, and those around her.

Leave us be . My great grandmother told my mother she combed aunt Jennie hair.. her grandmother. Can respect that they just wanted to be left alone and to not fight in the rich man war, just leave us be.

Strange how on another comment, you claimed she was your great great grandmother. Which is it, or is it neither? 🙄

I don't think Union soldiers would have left other union soldiers laying to rot. I think you meant confederate soldiers left union soldiers laying, and when Aunt Jenny and her family buried them, that's why the confederates got so angry. 🤔

Vengeance pack a heavy price, but I've lost a child, I know the feeling. And can also say if there's gonna be killing, that we didn't ask for, we'll make sure we die how and when we decide. Nobody decides my morality for me. And nobody will decide when I leave earth if I have a chance to stop it. I can't say it's right but I understand it.

Very interesting story. Great narration. Can’t say I blame Aunt Jenny for her actions.

I found the one comment by the lecturer VERY ironic and hypocritical (I'm paraphrasing): that most Southerners in that area wanted only to be left alone. EXCUSE ME? What in the hell did Southern slave owners (& those Southern whites who benefited from slavery) think enslaved blacks wanted??? The very same thing---to be left the hell alone. What an audacious comment given the hardship most Southerners (not all) inflicted on enslaved blacks. And don't get me started on the treatment of Natives. Just saying.

The world has had some crappy history. Lets learn from and move on. No one alive today was around then. Just saying.

@@robertsmithUH60driver First, sir, it does not matter that noone alive today was present during slavery or it's ugly aftermath (segregation, Jim Crow, the denial of the G.I. Bill and other governmental programs to returning WWII black vets, etc., etc.), most whites have in some form or fashion have benefited from those past indignations---deny it if you will. Secondly, sir, more towards your point: Unfortunately, NOT everyone learns from the past; hell NOT everyone learns from the present-- especially when, in 2021, you STILL have award-winning Southern country music artists (such as Morgan Wallen) refer to blacks in a derogatory manner. Thirdly, sir, I'm all in favor of moving forward, but don't suggest it to me, instead direct it to those in the majority who still harbor such racist views. racist views--tell that to them. I'm for moving forward, BUT NOT at the expense of white-washing, forgetting or ignoring our nation's past (as some are attempting to do with the attempt to wipe the Era of slavery from our children's history books. Should I go on? So, again, I reiterate my original point regarding the video: Just like Southerners during the Colonial and anti-bellum eras, blacks, too, wanted to be left the hell alone. Despite your comment/response, my response remains the same. Just sayin.'

@@everettjennings4443 with all the crap that was done to the native americans, you dont hear them bitching about how bad they ha e had it. People from japan was placed in 'camps' during ww2 just because of their heritage yet they have not bitched but have become some of the richest in the USA. Look @ the cities in japan that was hit by the bombs and look @ Detroit. Total opposite now. The cities in japan grew bad and detroit is now a dump. Detroits issues prib has nothing to do with the dems being in control since then. Just saying. Its not a south issue it the dumocrat issue. Look up what a certain dem pres said in the 30's about the black community. Just maybe, if the black community would get off the dem plantation life would be better. Not saying the rep has all the answers. Look up Sara Breedlove. If she can do what she did when she did there is no excuse for anybody today. Yes the US has issues but it better than any other country in the world. Ive been in about 20 different ones myself and have seen it with my own eyes. Bottom line, if you want something and work hard you can get it. IMO, using rase as an excuse for not getting something isnt why you didnt get it. Some other issues are having or not having a good home, two parents, and gettung married before having kids helps. Also not breaking the law and being in jail. A single parent family is hard and could lead to kids doing unlawful things. Also is a good education. That cannt be taken away from you. Again, learn from the past and move on. Anybody can succeed today if they work hard. Using race is an excuse too me. But you have your view and I have mine.
