I saw an interview with Carol Burnett where she said the writers wanted Carol to play Mamma. When Carol saw the script she said "I'm playing Eunice and we're doing it Southern." The writers almost walked off in protest. When they finally did the show, it was such a success that "the writers couldn't write the Family sketches fast enough."
They came up with the characters in the bathroom. Carol said “mama do you have any toilet paper?” And Vickie said “well where the he’ll do you think we are? Of course I have toilet paper!” Carl said “well excuse me for living” They laughed and instantly went to the writers.
My favorite dysfunctional family! They make narcissistic abuse funny, God bless them all. The relentless criticism, the total absence of appreciation, the complete lack of love and acceptance, the melodrama that evaporates into thin air. I looked forward to this all week. Watching this and being able to laugh must have saved so many people from despair.
The best one was with Roddy McDowall. Eunice had a new poodle which the family made a huge deal about. Roddy McDowell had won the Nobel Prize for literature. And Mama asked how long he was going to live off his past achievements. Meanwhile the poodle rolled over and they thought it was the greatest thing on earth.
I read somewhere that for one rehearsal of Eunices Family they agreed to try and say it straight; no accents, no pulling faces, no shouting. It was so depressing that they ended up in tears. I hope that was true!
pinz2022 - um, no. Why is it that people always assume that blacks always get their ideas from Caucasians? I am not prejudiced. Tyler Perry got the *"Madea"* inspiration by watching certain older women in his family, and or from Martin Lawrence if I'm not mistaken. However, I believe it's from some of the older women in his family. It is also a fact, reality, and truth that people of color are/were the first humans on this planet, starting in Africa, the motherland. Even "Africa" wasn't the original name of that invaded/colonized continent. Just like other continents, countries, and or islands around the planet got renamed by pale-skinned colonizers.
This was the first Eunice sketch I ever saw on Carol Burnett. I was finally allowed to stay up past 10pm on Saturdays at age 12 and this was on. Loved it!
I just keep thinking how awesome Vicky Lawrence was as "Momma" on Carol Burnett and "Momma's Family" and was younger than most of the people she worked with. I love watching "The Family" on youtube. They were all awesome on the show, but to play an old lady and be the youngest does take talent. Those clips still crack me up.
Carol is amazing and these old school comedy is unlike any other they put heart in it , even though I was not born I'm a comedian and comedy writer and look to this show as my comedy bible
OGSpaceCadet Of course my family and I always considered the area to be in the south, but they supposedly live in Raytown, which is just outside K.C.MO.
mark40511 Yes lol. And now she has the face to match the age Mama was supposed to be. And funny thing is Vicki Lawrence is now older than Mama was supposed to be on the show. But she doesn't have the gray curly hair; people used to age faster back in the 80s.
@@VigilanteVegan People did not age faster. People age at various rates. It depends on your diet, drinking, smoking, drugs, stress, getting enough sleep, and many other things.
@@VigilanteVegan People did not age faster. Some people age faster. Some age slower, and she was a young woman at the time. She did not have grey hair. She was wearig a wig.
Funerals....when everyone shows up...in-laws and out-laws...all under one roof for an hour...and then the bickering starts all over again. Things that happened years past etc. are once again brought to light. Funerals, like family reunions...make for a good day's entertainment.
It would be nice to have programing like this again when laughter was generated by talent, timing and originality, Not just a foul mouth and perversion.
Mama needs a self cleaning oven....and I thought Aunt Mae went watching "Another World"....when Bill Wolff said "We will return to our story after these messages....", Aunt Mae left and never returned.
How dare you bring that up?!? Mama has carried memories of Eunice’s behaviour that day like a stone in her heart for ten years and would appreciate not being reminded of that humiliating experience!
Love this show i watch it everynight after work....love momma family she I so funny she looks go is in black she always wears different colors but this is a great show ...these 4 are amazing ppl
YEAH! YOU HAD A 25-CENT-ONE OFF ON *COFFEE!* 8:48 YOU HAD A 10-CENT-ONE OFF ON *DOG FOOD!* AND YOU HAD A _TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE_ ON *TOILET PAPER!* THE *DOUBLE* PLY! NOW WILL YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH ABOUT THEM *D*MN COUPONS?!*

I'm still happy that Carol finally got a whole entire special for that character "Eunice". It was such a sad and heartbreaking TV movie, but finally "Eunice" was forced to face reality and come to the realization that her life was "like a toilet plunger working overtime"....... That movie is here-----> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NGaX0NIQjUw.html&ab_channel=BobBarnett

Carols white sandle shoes. White pearls were classic. But those white shoes. Gloves. Womens gloves were worn everywhere. Classic. They can even manage to make classic life events, tacky. And The BEER in pull top cans... Tacky. Absolutely southern :streator IL. They did this perfectly. M. IL
LMAO @ Ed: "Yeah!!! U Had A 25 Cent One Off Coffee, U Had A 10 Cent One Off On Dog Food and U Had A 2 for the Price Of One On Toilet Paper: THE DOUBLE PLY...!!!!"
Mary Hlad lol I b laughing she alway being mean if it not mama it he’s wife or Ellen she alway call him a plumer lol it priceless how he took of after so much blittering with a 3 dragons
I believe she said before that she based the Eunice character on her mother. That might explain why she's always drinking a beer, as Carol said her mother died an alcoholic at 46.
