It's so cool you're doing a Meat Puppets guitar lesson. Meat Puppets II and Up On the Sun are my favorite albums as well. I have a personal history with that band. Growing up in France, I saw them on a rock TV program in 1985 (it's on RU-vid), "singing" their song Maiden's Milk (the Kirkwood brothers are whistling the entire song). I was intrigued but forgot about them (I was into a bunch of other stuff at the time lol). A few years later (1992) I saw that they'd be playing in Paris; I remembered that whistling song so I bought a ticket to the show (small venue in the northern part of Paris). Long story short: I met my American wife at that show and moved to the US a year later. I'm still in the US (no longer with the wife, living a lonely life, but that's the choice I made...).
Absolutely LOVE the Meat Puppets. Curt Kirkwood is an incredible guitarist, at least to my ears that seem drawn more to unusual and interesting-sounding guitar playing than anything else, and the whole band comes together in such fascinating rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic ways. Great lesson as always, Adrian. More importantly, this lesson is yet another in the countless examples why this channel and Adrian's approach to sharing his knowledge and love of music are truly rare gems. (By the way, I'm still chuckling over the title of Adrian's fictitious click-bait RU-vid video, "5 Terrible Guitar Mistakes You Didn't Even Realize You Were Making!")
Very cool. I saw the Meat Puppets play live at the Fillmore in San Francisco back in 1994. I was right up front close to the band. They were great that night. Thank you for the lesson!!
Honestly Adrian, after this many years I simply trust you and look forward to the video! You're still the only person delivering lessons of this caliber for completely obscure material and it's great 😂
I know who the Meat Puppets are but have never actually listened to a single song of theirs. This tune is really cool, would have never heard it if it weren't for your channel. I've said it before, but it's just about impossible for you to pick a bad tune. Really appreciate this channel, thanks Adrian!!
thanks for doing these deep cuts, Adrian. For the real heads out there - love that you do stuff like this. For my part, I feel like the music I like most has guitars playing the interesting supporting actor roles...
This is one of my favorite songs and ive tried learning it a few times and the tabs are never quite right. Really appreciate this, i havent picked up my guitar in over a year but i probably will to learn the song this weekend.
Agreed with all the previous comments, beautiful non mainstream tracks like this are why I’m more than happy to support you. Your musical taste seems to cover most of my personal favourites so please continue with more tracks like this! Next some more shore gazing like the Drop Ninteens! And any more Bob Mould tracks you wish to cover!
On Meat Puppets II they tuned their instruments to F Standard. Not sure why but they recorded the album on drugs, that might explain it. In my opinion it makes the album sound unique and interesting. This song grabbed my ear when I listened to it for the first time and I became a fan of the band.
Great job. Curt Kirkwood is an incredible songwriter and guitar player. He could play incredibly fast and was influenced by cool guitarists like Peter Buck or Greg Ginn.
Thank you Adrian, this is fantastic. Love the Pups, they had some awesome guitar instrumentals. There is a hilarious clip on youtube where they start playing 'I am a mindless idiot' and someone from the crowd yells 'Seals, Whales'. Easily done ...they had a lot of great but very similar sounding instrumentals.😆
I was a Meat head back in the day and happily surprised to hear you teach this :) Besides thanks, just want to say I wouldn't call that first record hardcore punk; it was pretty idiosyncratic (ie. weird) and already you could hear his exceptional guitar talent coming through. Also it was overtly stoned sounding, which is the only "feel" element missing in your breakdown- I had the same impression from your Neil Young lesson (good for you)! Finally, RIP Spot, who did such a perfect production job on those first LPs.
This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing this lesson. May be a little off the beaten path, but a great opportunity and introduction for those who don't know the band's work.
Thanks Adrian. As usual, another interesting lesson. This is a surprise, as I only associated the Meat Puppets with the early 80's "Punk" thing. I really like this and will explore their stuff further. Keep on providing your "content", works for me.
Been following your channel for not too long and I really love your selection! Plus, the best guitar teacher I have ever seen here or elsewhere. Any chance on doing Jesus Lizard, This Heat or Marc Ribot's demented Softly as in a Morning Sunrise cover?
I like how you're always original in your choice of songs to cover. Maybe a suggestion that may also be interesting and a band you probably know: The Jesus Lizard. Especially on the Goat album you can find some great guitar works that's worth it to have a look at.
Not many people even know this album, nevermind be prepared to take the time to deliver a quality lesson on a song from it. Awesome Adrian thanks mate. Hey are you a fan of early Manics. A lesson on anything from the Holy Bible would be awesome. Die In The Summertime maybe? Or anything by New York Dolls/Johnny Thunders? Take it easy and thanks again ☺️
This strikes me as a good piece to learn then maybe work up some lead improv over it. Besides good old e minor pentatonic, any suggestions for some interesting ideas? Any modal possibilities here?
