This is a 4K and HDR version of a video of the Northern Lights and Aurora Borealis that I prepared a while back. It was shot in Northern Norway using various Sony cameras. Previously it was uploaded in SDR but I'm currently going through some of my archive and re-encoding clips in HDR with the correct metadata so that RU-vid will play them back in HD, 4K and 4K HDR if you have a 4K HDR monitor or TV. If you like it and want to see more HDR content please subscribe as I will be adding more HDR clips over the coming weeks and months.

Hi Alister, hope you’re well. Would you mind sharing some basic settings parameters for capturing the NL’s? I was in Alaska for the first few months of the year and we were struggling to capture them on a PXW-750 but didn’t get to try with the A7s3 - would love to be more prepared if there’s a next time. Thanks in advance and for all the info/support you provide to the community 🙏🏼

There are no one fits all settings as the brightness of the Aurora varies immensely and it depends on the lenses you have and what you wish to achieve. The main factors is getting a very fast lens, ideally f1.4. For time lapse starting point is 800 ISO, f1.4, 2 second exposure. For real time video you probably want to start with the shutter speed you are willing to accept which may be 1/24 or maybe 1/12 and then bring the ISO up until you get a sufficiently bright exposure.
