CoSirenCars would like to present a test of a single tone Whelen 3016 located in Pheasant Run Park. This test includes a three minute wail tone and a three minute whoop tone. The siren did very well when it performed the wail tone, but the siren began to malfunction when it performed the whoop tone. There was a loud pop right before the whoop tone. I figured it could be a blown speaker driver or something. More videos of siren tests will be coming soon.

The whoop tone sounds like something you'd hear from a siren in Germany or something. We can call it the Whoops tone.

The reason why whoop is doing that is cause the low pitch cut-off is too low for the TG to cut it to silence or due to the weather the siren was in at that time caused it to preform weird. this problem can be fixed with a simple turn on the adjustable resistor on the TG

Well I'm sure there is a specific reason why the city only tests their sirens twice a year. I am also sure that the city takes the sirens seriously since they are going out replacing the older siren speakers in the central part of the city. On the other hand, I would be glad to hear what they reply back about that.

leon wilkins By the way, there's nothing wrong with electronic sirens. If it gets the message out, then there's no point in taking all of them down.

actually, the electronic ones with the motor that goes back and forth have a flaw in the system where if they jam or the motor has a problem they can only sound in a certain direction or area. so they don't always get the message out. the mechanical ones have no need to keep changing direction and suffer from less rotational issues. really none of the manufacturers did a proper test on them before putting them on the market to test for general failures during system testing, like sudden starts and stops, or the fact the attack mode on some causes the motor to shut off for a moment when the siren driver hits the low point and stops as well before restarting. they also have a higher failure rate and the solar types are vulnerable to trees and panel breakage (because the solar panel is the only means of charging the battery). batteries should only be used as a backup and the rest of the time they should run off of AC power, with the batteries being tested weekly to make sure they are working right.

I'd say that old controller is on its way out for sure, it's also not supposed to just cut off like it did at the end of the wail signal. That whoop signal sounds extremely creepy though, I kind of like it! Nice video!

That sound is just the speaker driver being old. Anyways the tone is called the 'whoop' tone.

I used to live in that area a few years ago. Now I relocated by the Kennedy Ridge area. Denver just installed new Federal Signal sirens all over the place.. So very much excited!! :) Great Video!

I spoke with the EMS coordinator and he said the contractor will be replacing some of the malfunctioning 3016's with the newer 2905's. The sirens will be replaced sometime very soon, so can you keep an eye out for the new sirens? I will also try to check on the sirens in the central park of Aurora closer to home.

Sounds good. I fired off an email myself asking them if they are addressing the issues. Overall our system seems to be working well aside from the few that fail now and then. The one near my house at Clyde Miller Elementary School failed once before. It activated but then wound down and shut off while the others kept wailing.

@PugetSoundStormWatch We actually have all dual tones! Some are different physically, but they do a two-tone wail for a tornado warning, then the sirens shut off and do a 30 second "all clear whoop tone".

Well Here in Louisville, Kentucky the Emergency Management Agency, & MetroSafe Communications have relays setup to automatically sound the sirens on test day (The 2nd Tuesday of every month @ 12:00 pm for three minutes), or special test days (If unusual circumstances call for it, the sirens will be sounding on the 1st or the 3rd Tuesday of the month.)

Here in wi most of us test every Saturday at noon all year round and some of the smaller towns every day at noon except Sundays but if there is severe weather than it's called off until Wednesday at noon

In MN the sirens are tested the first Wednesday of each month,select cities also have their siren set to do a noon sounding-most noon are timer activated

To be honest I wish the Aurora would test their sirens more often. They do weekly silent tests every Tuesday, but I think it would be beneficial to audibly test the sirens so residents can get more use to hearing them. I thing Aurora began testing their sirens in March because it is close to the beginning of tornado season.

I'm an Aurora, CO resident & my husband & I are retired, we worked for the City of Aurora. I believe they tested the sirens 3 maybe 4 times a year. They've done them in the Winter, I remember that, but I think there should be a message over the speaker saying its a test or a warning & to take shelter or have someone speak the sighting of a funnel cloud/tornado. Just a suggestion.

The 3016's in the north and the west part of Aurora are dual tone but the rest are single tone

Reason the tones were wired was that this is the very old 1980's model 3016. The ones from the 90's had better tones.

Umm, whoop tone supposed to be like that. IF this siren is older. expect the pop (was caused by a signal) Oh, the driver cards is screwed up in this siren, thats why.

I wish they were just replacing the controllers, but it makes since to replace the 3016's since they are so old and they are having so many issues. There are some sirens that didn't even sound during the test. I checked the specs and I believe the 3016 produces 124 dBc, and the 2905 produces 70dB

I've notice that there are 2 more like that one in aurora. One of them is off of I225 exit Mississippi and the other is lliff and Blackhawk road next to the fire station

Whelen has the Vortex, the Hornet, and the 2805 ( which is similar to the 2905).

I actually just emailed them! I'm not a crab, but I'm from the Northeast where tornadoes are an EXTREMELY rare event! I have been studying meteorology for 24 years, and Aurora and Denver are both IN Tornado Alley! On the western edge, but still. Aurora needs to wail those things once a month to stop complacency! People in Aurora don't take the sirens seriously and it's because the city doesn't either!!

Wait this was March 2013!?!? As in a few weeks ago?? I never heard this! I thought the city tests the sirens in May & November? Gosh, Aurora is a great place to live, but their siren testing is horrible!! There is NO routine and they expect everyone to know the sirens are going to be tested! Why don't they test them ONCE PER MONTH like EVERY OTHER CITY AND TOWN from The Rockies to The Midwest do!? Ridiculous!
