Aussie Winter Bushcraft Camp

I head into the Aussie bush for a quick overnighter to do some bushcraft, setup a tarp shelter, enjoy a few beers, cook up an awesome feed and fail miserably at the hand drill. It was a great little trip though, nothing beats those fresh winter camps.
Hope you all enjoy it.

Taper the end of the drill some, that ought to help. I always taper the ends of my drills. Stays in the groove better, concentrates friction and heat better. In my experience. :) Great video!

I read somewhere that becoz Oz is such an arid continent and so prone to bushfires that regulations prevent us from doing a lot of the type of camping shown in the UK and USA. Maybe that is why channels like yours are not as common. I appreciate how careful and safe your type of camping is but honestly not all people take as much care so, in some ways, that is not a bad thing. Have you ever watched Alfieaesthetics (based in the UK)? He has some great educational and very humorous videos not just on bushcraft and survival but identifying useful and dangerous flora and fungi - wish we had someone like that here ... hint hint!! Great video! I really appreciate your honesty in showing how things don't always go to plan and then give and use alternatives - makes everything so much more real and encouraging to those who might expect different outcomes. Enjoy your trip to the centre! Cheers!

@@howtogirl I am in Victoria and most places I know have similar restrictions to those you have indicated. NSW seems less restricted whether that is actually the case or just they have a larger mass of inaccessible places so compliance is not as easy to monitor. I still appreciate these videos as Scott is educational as far as plant id and does address safety issues by example even if it is not verbalised.
@ScottysGoneWalkabout

@@howtogirl @Allie B Hey, yeah I definately understand your concern. The rules regarding firewood collecting on the NSW Office of Environment website states: 1. Collecting firewood in parks for use off-park is prohibited. 2. Collecting timber for firewood is allowed in backcountry (more remote) areas. People just need to be smart about it and not collect any fallen timber that could be used as a shelter for native animals. Hopefully that clears it up for you :)

Nice one Scotty. Tips? Check out the permanent water on the "backside" of Uluru. Spend some time at the caravan park just outside the park. Quite a social experience. And Alice Springs has a night club! I think Friday night is the go. Not my scene but a certain kind of interesting. The kids in town have a bunch of stories (they probably should be at home) and the dry river bed just north may inspire your imagination. Fantastic part of Australia! You camp cooking skills are par excellent!

I actually checked your video's earlier today to see if you had anything new. Then this came across. Great. Love your video's, and use a few tips I've learned from you. By the way, I'm 68, proving we're never too old to learn. One question---would you consider a video, demonstrating the various tarp configurations you use? I'll setup the basic lean-to, or pup-tent, (A-frame.) I'm now trying to figure out how you set the tarp here. Just thought I'd ask. Be safe. From Colorado, US, Roger.

Another great video. I love the fact you are happy to show your failures, keeping it real. as mentioned in other comments you need to put a dull point on your drill, I also have never used a square hole on the base board, I always cut a shallow round hole. I would also suggest mastering a bow drill before a hand drill, walk before you run. Instead of char cloth try charring some punk wood, the problem with relying on char cloth is you cant replicate it in the bush without cutting your clothes. For that reason I have moved away from cloth to natural charring materials. Keep up the great work.

Hey mate, as Siani said, taper the end of the drill. Also put a small triangular notch in the baseboard as that increases air flow. Good luck for next time! I look forward to your next video!

Enjoy the red centre. Flies may well be a pita. Also at night the desert gets very cold. Plenty of walks like valley of the winds at kata tjunta. Kings canyon has some amazing views; the rim walk is fantastic. West macdonnells also has some amazing places. Avoid driving at night, too many things come onto the road that you can't see.

I just discovered your channel tonight and immediately subscribed. You set up a high quality campsite. Your fire pit was excellent, and your food looked great! I also really liked the reusable wrapping material that you had around some of your food items! I think that if you had used a wider board for your spindle base, and notched it out to allow the hot dust to accumulate under the hole in the board, you might have found success with your hand drill method. Also, using a bearing block on top to apply pressure would have helped considerably. I do not intend to be critical of your efforts. I am merely offering a possible solution to help you in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed your video, and I will be looking for more of them coming from you!

It's best to use hard wood for the drill itself, although grass tree (or yakka as its called where I'm from) is good for the base. Handrills are best made of the taller, straighter species of wattle or she oak.
