AUSTART Air Starter Motors 

A nice thing about these is a weight-saving result. Light weight starter and less heavy batteries add up to a noticeable reduction of weight! These things would put out a lot of torque, and it was said if you started an engine in bitter cold it could yank a bearing if it wasn't adequately lubed (like truck sitting for a very long time) and spin it right in the journal space in a rod, main, or cam!! NOW I GOT A FUNNY STORY FOR YA!! I had a Roadway truck, (1980 Road Boss 2) with an air start. It was out of air, and I had a hundred pound propane tank where I was at. In the summer the pressure in this tank would be at 140 PSI or so, and it would not deplete since liquid propane can deliver thousands of cubic feet of vapor as it boils off! I have filled many flat tires off a small grill tank. Anyway, I filled the air system of this truck with the propane gas. I had a driver in the cab and I stood by the hood and told him to start the truck. Some way, some how, maybe friction of the vanes in the starter motor, ignited the exhaust coming out of the starter! A big bloom of flame rolled out from under the hood and cost me some eyebrows and front hairs over my forehead!! The truck started fine, though!!

I have very happy memories of air starters in highway trucks built in the late '80s. The only bugbear is if you run out of air. 😂

Great to see a Aussie company designing and manufacturing here still. One note on the video, it would have been great to hear some of the starters in operation
