About 'Elvis'
The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Austin Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley's rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis's life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge).

I’m not an Elvis fan. Scratch that, wasn’t an Elvis fan. This movie captivated me from Start to finish.

Exactly. I had heard of Elvis. Even heard a few of his songs. Never got why people were so crazy about him. Never cared to know anything about him. This movie was so rich texturally, not only was I interested in Elvis as a person, but I now have several songs of his on repeat that I rock out to almost daily. 🧑‍🎤

Austin Butler dug deep into Elvis's life that Elvis's spirit blended together and with the understanding of studying Elvis's style and songs and voice he brought to the movie and a new generation.... with that said... don't you think he deserves an Oscar or two... one for Elvis and one for Austin......??

Dear Baz, I was 13 when Elvis died. I remember watching him on our black and white television and he was only filmed from the waist up. I was a huge Elvis fan. When I was in the theatre on opening night, it was a raw and emotional experience of being transported back to what true rock and roll was. I loved the historical perspective of how the Black Community shaped music, Elvis and everything that we have today. Your casting of the characters is nothing short of brilliant. I expect to see your vision, hardworking and epic film win ever single academy ward available. Your work is brilliant. Thank you for bring Elvis back for our generation who were privileged to have experienced him. Many Thanks, Louisa

I have seen the film twice in 3 days, will go again next week and I've read through the comments. There is a common thread with those that loved the film which is that it moved them enough to send them back to see it again. I can't remember another example of a film that has affected me enough to make me want to see it again so quickly. Austin Butler WAS Elvis Presley. He expertly captured his mannerisms and expressions and, most importantly, his sexuality. Sheer directing brilliance and craftsmanship from Baz Luhrmann has resulted in pure entertainment; over two hours of sensory overload supported by many talented actors, creative camera work, color and costumes and underpinned by some of the 20th century's most unforgettable music. This has been the 'lift' that the world so badly needs.

I agree with most of what you say, having seen the film three times and each time liking it more. The only thing I would say that as excellent as Austin Butler was, he still didn’t have the stage presence and charisma that Elvis had. Really, no one could be as good, althoughAustin does a fantastic job. Tom Hanks was brilliant too. Looking forward to seeing it again.

Even today, I don't think there is enough discussion about female desire and objects of female desire. Elvis , I think, was the first artist who (I think naturally) embraced the role of being an object of sexual desire for women- And its's so refreshing to see the natural reactions of women to Austin's performance in this movie. He commented on this himself on one of his interviews, how rewarding for him it was to see the natural blushing of the extras while he was performing.

I used to hear my mother talk about Frank (Sinatra) the same way. He sang seductively back in the 1940’s and millions of girls swooned. Same thing but different generation. Frank was the king to the WWll kids. Of course Michael Jackson was another icon!

I was thinking the same thing too. I felt like Elvis was judged for his sexual expression also because of fears/judgements relative to female sexuality

They don’t make them like they used to: I think one thing that people liked about EP is that like Austin said once - at times he is cute and innocent - playful- then other times he is looking up like a crocodile out of the water, the focus is very intense in one direction. Despite the commentary of the time in which he became famous, I think Elvis did a very good job of showing sex appeal without being sleazy. He was rather private and vulnerable… basically I think he had a complex, dynamic personality and he really knew how to work a room. Sex appeal for the sake of would not be enough to be like EP. Also at the beginning of his career, he didn’t get why the girls were reacting. He moved like he did when he got slain in the Spirit at the black church. So this came very natural to him. With that said he was smart enough to see that he got a reaction and decided to keep it going - like he was a man to listen to the people! I think he was a very special unique kind of performer with a lot of soul & something very relatable despite the grandiosity of his later life.

I haven't ever seen a movie 5 times at the theater but I saw this one 5. There are many layers, and Austin is so likeable by himself. The camera loves him. The movie has clips of real elvis in montages. People want to see that. Aust pulled off a miracle too. I liked maverick but seeing it once was enough since it was a copy of the original.

this IS the most intellectual and TRUE conversation about the artistry of elvis presley, that I've ever seen. amd I've studied this subject longer than most people have been alive. elvis presley was soul depth and diversity personified. his initial sound at sun studio was the fusion of white country with black rhythm and blues, THOSE critically acclaimed recordings are REVELATORY and innovative. then, he changed multiple times in his very very short career and life, truly remarkable.

It is amazing, how many generations even after his death, knew his music well. I was 4 when Elvis passed away. I grew up in love. I used to make him Christmas cards that I just hung on my wall until my step mother would throw them away. I loved the fact that Elvis came from poverty to wealth, through doing an art, a creative process that he absolutely loved. True testament that art/music/ and doing what you love- the process of creation can set a soul free.

The best ever movie I've seen about Elvis since I was 13 years old...when I eceived my first single of Elvis from my older sister and now I am a 78 years old lady and will be a die-hearted devoted Elvis-fan until I die. What a fantastic and genuine movie. All actors are terrific. Must see it one more time. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see Elvis perform alive even vif I've been to Graceland twice. I'm from far away Sweden but love him as much as you American Elvis-fans do. His story , mannerism and fabulous voice belong to all people of the world. GOD BLESS HIS BEAUTIFUL SOUL!

Like Baz mentioned when Elvis drives off and goes to Club Handy. I guess before shooting, all the extras on set were scared and there was "fear on the set." Then you played that Kanye West song and told everyone to relax & enjoy themselves; it ended up being a powerful and fun scene. As an audience, that was a VERY POWERFUL SCENE. ALL OF IT. FROM HIS YELLING AT HIS MAMMA FOR DRINKING TOO MUCH AND NEVER BEING HAPPY TO ENJOYING the performance at club Handy. Amazing! Baz, now we know why your movies are such a wonderful experience. You respect all your set dressers and actors and make masterpieces by doing so. Thank you❤❤❤.

Great feature on The black influences! He did not steal, was influenced. Black s were doing that all along. But Elvis loved to move. Whites sadly took for granted when blacks were moving like that. Shows the stereotype of blacks not really looking at talent. But when Elvis did it whites noticed, they never saw a white guy move like that. While male singers in a way were stereotyped too. Clean cut, in a tuxedo! But there was an explosion: Elvis!! To his credit never said he invented rock roll he just did what he grew up on and what came naturally. Sam Phillips helped develope it. He gave black artists a chance because of talent no race. Little Richard , Chuck Berry,. B.B. King, as Elvis said RR came from rythmn and blue s and gospel. They were founders too! Elvis declared King by fans. But he said” Christ was King” but he knew fans meant well. He was just a young kid naturally akin to music he grew up on. He loved church music enthusiaism! That’s it, that started it all. He just innocently went to Sun to record a song for mom. Back then you could that too! He had no idea of going on n to show business, it was just a regular day. Secretary noticed and rest is history. His success came by accident, wasn’t like walking in Hollywood pounding the pavement trying to get discovered in the movies. This really was by accident. At the right place, at the right time.Except for America got talent etc you don’t get really get that. Except Susan Boyle. But even the great talents who are noticed on there, you very rarely hear from them again . Of course exceptions, but it’s like acting , only about 2 percent get to that success ful stage. It is difficult! One shining moment on tv does not make you a star. It’s a long road and hard work.

Baz was really gonna take Elvis' favorite story, make it his own and expect no one to notice... 😆😆😆 Typical Celeb. Fake as hell. Tom Hanks already said he had No clue about Elvis or his music in another interview. He then went on ELVIS' RADIO and repeated a bunch of Elvis' lies where we KNOW, EAT, SLEEP & BREATHE ELVIS. Every day of Elvis has been cataloged from The day he got called in to Sun by Marion and scheduled his first practice at Bill Black's that Sunday. You can't FAKE ANY ELVIS STORY or ELVIS MEMORIBILIA. Elvis was photographed every day of his life from his first show in 1953 until the day he died in 1977. I literally have a book called : Elvis Day by Day: The Definitive Record of His Life and Music

Even though the main arc of the film is about Elvis and the Colonel, part of the narrative is about the birth of rock 'n roll and the black performers who inspired Elvis. Once you see the film, it'll make sense.

Great point maybe because of the book Red and Sonny did about Elvis. The girls were left out IMO because they were looking for approval from Priscilla.

I believe the friendship with the black entertainers were overblown. They left out James Brown who was at Elvis Funeral.

@@NanaSam333 Its not they can't get credit its just their involvement with Elvis was exxagerated and the people he was involved with for most of his life was completely cut out.

I just loved this film. Austin was Amazing! He nailed it all the way. I've seen the film 3 times already, I want to see it tomorrow in honor of Elvis' last performance in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 26th 1977. Elvis continues to be loved by millions and millions forever, he will never be forgotten. I wonder if Elvis would have lived, what would he have done in the eighties or even nineties. Thanks Baz, for giving us a Beautiful film to watch about The one and only Elvis Aaron Presley. Baz please let us see the remaining 1 1/2 hours of footage you filmed. Thank You So Much! Baz,Austin, Tom, Olivia,Alton,Yola, Kelvin, and the rest of the cast and crew of "Elvis". Take Care and God Bless You! ❤️ ❤️

LITTLE SISTER: After watching the movie three times, I truly believe that if Elvis had lived longer, he would have gone into politics to try to “fix” everything going wrong in our Country…the brutal killings of Martin Luther King, Jr., Bobby Kennedy and President Kennedy. To me, I feel like Elvis was clearly disturbed at the direction our Country was heading and would have tried to steer it in a different direction. His 1968 comeback song “If I Can Dream” demonstrated his frustrations with our Country and perhaps the World.

You know Baz Lurman commitment to making a film is just incredible. Elvis is another example of his choice of actors, costumes and the development of the arc of the film is beyond most other directors. Being a lifelong Elvis to say “fan” is an understatement and watching this film with Austin as Elvis brought me back to the actual Elvis performing. And the backstory of Elvis’ life from a young boy going to see B.B King to gospel singers which showed his embracing the Black community way before it was a question. Hats off to all involved🌟

What absolute fun this was to watch. Thanks to all of you and the others in the Elvis movie. One of the best movies I’ve seen in yrs. It’s been open for two days and I’ve seen it twice. Plan on going back since we’ve collected enough points to watch it on the gigantic special XD screen. A better cast I’ve rarely ever seen. Bless you all. I’ve been chronically ill for 28 years and you’ve brought me such joy. You’ve shown the world how great of a talent Elvis was and how instinctively he sang and lived his life. He deserves your pride in him and you deserve how proud he must be of all of you. God bless.

Saw the movie yesterday. It was genius. My dad is from rural Mississippi and born the same year as Elvis. Baz got everything right in this movie. He’s right about a certain inner spirituality that’s just part of life in the South. I remember my grandmother taking me to those all day singing revivals. I loved seeing that in the movie. It absolutely influenced Elvis’s moves and style. And as far as the audience reacting to him on stage, my aunts say they cried. One even wet her pants! I also believe Austin was born to play this part. I don’t believe in coincidence. His voice is so similar. His cheekbones, his natural swag. Unbelievable. I can’t wait to see it again. ❤️

Yes, I lived in the south also. Elvis loved the white gospel group JDSumner and the Stamps Quartet. Use to sneak to see them because he couldn't afford to go in. JD saw him and started letting him in from then on. Then, years later JD was working for Elvis for nearly 1700 concerts, and on stage in Vegas all through the 70's. Elvis had many influences, not mentioned in the movie. That's why he sang the way he did. He had soul, which you can't buy, and a special charisma. He was able to sing in more genres of music than any other entertainer ever has or will.

I've been hyperfixated on this film since the first time I saw it, and have seen it again several times, and every. damn. time. I watch it again I am fascinated all over again with how well Austin was able to capture Elvis's energy and charisma, and how he completely disappeared and transformed into him for this role. His almost 3 years of research and coaching really shows👏👏👏

I saw the movie yesterday. The music, Elvis, the acting, the historical context was all beautifully done. I left with my chest hurting in anger and pain at the damage done by his "so-called" manager and the many others of the past--the beautiful young people, real stars who've been harmed by con-artists. I pray these young actors stay firmly grounded and not let anyone take advantage of them.

I watched this last, ohmigod, what can I say about this film that hasn't been said before. It was awesome, Butler was spellbinding as Elvis, watching the sequences from The Comeback Special and TTWII, you'd think you were actually watching Elvis, the way he moved, his mannerisms, Butler absolutely nailed it. And it was such an emotional film as well, being released 2 days after my Mums birthday (who's no longer here), it was through my Mum, my love of Elvis' music developed, as she lived through that era in the UK. I loved the sequence that skipped through Elvis' 60 movies, was really funny. Kudos to all involved.
